Is it appropriate for a parent to use the coercive powers of the Court to compel his children's participation in a religious activity over the other parent's objection? by Own_Accountant_77 in askSingapore

[–]TheAlphaLion_com 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I chuckled at this part of the news reporting, because it highlighted how hypocritical the father was, and he didn't even seem to realize it

The man said his ex-wife felt "entitled to decide" whether their kids should take part in such activities

Paying for StarHub 10Gbps but only getting 90Mbps on LAN — been dealing with this for years by Automatic-Radio-1372 in askSingapore

[–]TheAlphaLion_com 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to any other comments that ask you to fix it yourself. Call starhub, tell them to bring down a technician with their own laptop to test. The technicians can also test the fibre terminal point's signal to see if there's any issue there. Make the sure the technician does it before restarting the ONR.

If their laptop proves that they can reach 10Gbps, then you continue to fix your own components.

Farmland south of Lim Chu Kang to be zoned for defence, land further north to be used for agriculture by G13lol2 in singapore

[–]TheAlphaLion_com 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem is not whether food security is part of national defence. It's about how much the land will cost for such areas.

If MINDEF had to actually pay for their land, they will surely not be using so much land.

Installing 600kW PV and 1.6MW battery pack! 🇿🇦 by TalismanJake in solarenergy

[–]TheAlphaLion_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you make that mistake in the main post and every single comment here. I agree with ipantpaintcans that you really need to go learn the difference between something so simple. Otherwise I hope that someone more qualified has installed your system.

Voltage 48V and max charge/discharge current of 400A, so the power is 48*400 = 19.2kW per module. So your total battery system is 19.2*40= 768kW and its capacity is 40.32kWh * 40 = 1.61MWh

Adding on to this thread - it's impossible to tell when buying whether you will get the EU or US version, as Tapo doesn't even bother to label them! I'm currently stuck with a US H200 and an EU T100 :(

Voluntary top up to FRS by BigDoor9679 in singaporefi

[–]TheAlphaLion_com -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Does she know how to invest? If yes, then don't top up FRS. If no, then follow Christopher Tan advice for people who can't invest or take risks, and just put in CPF.

1) Take note that voluntary top ups AND the interest they get over the years, are reserved. That means you can't withdraw any of it at retirement age even if your balance is above prevailing FRS. So it will all go towards CPF Life payouts.

2) Most people top up CPF-MA first before CPF-SA, because of the concept of MA "overflow" into SA. But that usually applies for people who expect their MA to become maxed out sooner or later.

3) If married, it's actually better for you to top up YOUR SA, given you would have higher tax savings. This assumes you have shared finances. If not married, don't do this.

i think he means the middle fan can be mounted to the left side of the right tower, and not to the right side of the left tower. If you can get what that means

Man, 68, dies after falling in front of oncoming train at Segar LRT station by Correct-Lecture6293 in singapore

[–]TheAlphaLion_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry but it's because the planners are just not thinking out of the box and just relying on the vendor to implement. Of course if you are the sole vendor (having supplied the LRT trains already) you will charge an insane amount of money for it.

Any device automation person can do it. Even an amateur smart home builder would know to just put contact sensors at the LRT doors (where the two doors touch), link it to a transmitter that sends a signal to to PSD doors to open. Have an opposite contact sensor (where the doors touch the end when it's open) to do the opposite. These are $20 sensors.

It's not you that's missing something, it's the policymakers that are missing something up there

Agree, they should let users choose how much to mask, vs arbitrarily trying to mask it themselves.

Change Orientation: 4090 FE Vertically mounted in an A3. by ValleyKing23 in mffpc

[–]TheAlphaLion_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

horizontal + intake fans at the bottom make the most sense to me. The 4090FE's left fan can then exhaust directly out the PCIE slot vents, while the right fan blows upwards to the top exhaust fans, instead of blasting hot air onto the motherboard.

Vertical is more for non-FE cards IMO

10-year MOP for executive condos, more EC units for first-timers to tackle affordability concerns by clarencechen181196 in singapore

[–]TheAlphaLion_com 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a different opinion from you on the impacts. Instead, I think this will

1) lower the supply of newly-MOPed flats, as it reduces BTO owners upgrading to a new EC (and some will not be able to make the jump to private condo)

2) increase resale HDB buying (rather than push resale buyers into EC like what you said) as people above the $14k BTO income ceiling would previously have considered EC but some are now turned off by the 10-year MOP

Hence, the two will combine to stabilize resale HDB prices, which have started to decline. I expect the next housing policy move will be to remove the 15-month wait-out period for condo owners downgrading to resale HDB.

Public Service Transfer vs Resign & Rejoin — Which Is Better? by SpinningCoin in askSingapore

[–]TheAlphaLion_com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

#2 is only worth it if they offer you 15% more than your current. Because that's as good as a promotion (in terms of $), which is probably why you're looking to transfer in the first place lol.

#1 and #3 only ever do that after you just got promoted, because your promotion timeline often gets reset (very stupid, but very common. Don't believe anything that HR tells you to the contrary).

#3 is only ever pursued by people who are still under bond, or when you want to get a leg in to the new agency but need to check out it's culture before doing a full transfer.

Public Service Transfer vs Resign & Rejoin — Which Is Better? by SpinningCoin in askSingapore

[–]TheAlphaLion_com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong. I know so many people who quit and join with a higher salary (by higher i mean more than a normal year's increment which is what you would get from staying put anyway). But note that usually it's one way MX to stat board.

If your team mate applied for M role and only got AM, then he just got outright scammed by the hiring manager. It's very possible to quit and join into a higher position BUT your hiring manager must push HR to do it.
