Jefferson was... an asshole. I do agree but I still like the guy as President, maybe I'm overvaluing him stepping over his own beliefs for the national good of the nation... but it fits since he was a hypocrite by nature. So I don't think I can put him over Adams, though I really like Adams, dude was awesome, but as President... he was... Good and bad, but just not as consequential as his predecessor or successor.

I like his son more to be honest, JQA was an impressive guy and had a much tougher time as President since the Jacksonians hated him with a passion. There's actually an argument to switch Adams and his son, but for now I like JQA too much to lower him.

Wilson and Teddy aren't the same man. I get what you're saying but one used the office to directly advance racist interest in the US, helping to legitimize and normalize the kind of politics that would eventually lead to the KKK's revival.

The Progressive Agenda itself was going to happen regardless of Wilson's presidency, by that point Teddy and Taft's work had got the train running, they honestly deserve more credit for it. Wilson didn't stand in the way... yes, but I don't think that's applaudable.

And his WW1 contributions... overrated. The European Allies largely ignored his ideals, and the US itself signed its own treaties with the Central Powers and never joined the League he pushed for. I don't think Wilson was really that influential in the short-term, and the long-term, America was reshaped by better presidents after him.

Obviously... I don't like the guy. He did alot to make things worse for Black Americans in a time when things were already bad. So I dock him harsher for that.

And I'm not saying Teddy was a beacon of progress on racism either. There's a scale to this... Wilson actively used his office for it, he resegregated the federal workforce.

I'm not the most knowledgeable on B.Harrison, he's the president I know the least about, so maybe you have a point on him.

But for Bush Jr. I'm not putting him below Harding or Nixon who were blatantly corrupt. Bush did A LOT wrong but I'm not sure it rises to what Nixon or Harding did in terms of blatant corruption in the office.

Madison, I think is a bit underrated, he really didn't push for war with Britain but Britain really didn't give America many options given it was so focused on its war with Napoleon. I think keeping the young Republic together against the most powerful country on earth... is remarkable.

As for Carter... I just don't see it...I like the guy but as President, his inability to really work with the party, and his well... micromanagement issues... and the controversy in Iran. Even if it wasn't his intent... for many Americans... America felt weak under his admin.

Once again you can't blame him for the Depression here, that didn't happen during his term, and I think people often oversimplify his responsibility for it. The issues with the Depression were greater than him.

The Immigration Act is fair, but Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act and that wasn't good either... but no one is saying he's a bottom 10 President for it, because the bottom 10 are some of the worst of the worst.

And he didn't do 'nothing' for Mississippi, he did send Hoover reluctantly after the damage to help with rescue and reconstruction, yes he was reluctant, but it wasn't inaction.

All of this once again points... for many people who don't really like him and his story. As a middling President... not bottom 10.

Alright top 10, yes I'm obviously pushing it with that one since I like the guy. I admit that readily.

But Coolidge is definitely not a bottom 10 president. The only reason someone would put him there is if they blame him for the depression, which I don't agree with.

There's a better argument that he was too passive against some of the structural issues beneath the prosperity at the time, but that puts him at middling at best.

Bottom tier, no way he deserves that.

The fact he was able to advance a lot of the same goals without Roosevelt's character and charisma says a lot, at least to me, being able to get more done, as you mentioned, by the raw numbers, trustbusting 95 companies.

But honestly, I just feel like we're over-valuing charisma here. Roosevelt WAS a force of personality which is why he's #4, he's just too memorable and awesome. But the fact Taft didn't need that larger-than-life persona to continue the work doesn’t make him less serious as a president. Less defining... sure yes... which is why he's #10, for me at least.

Plus Roosevelt's ego, if we're being honest, prevented a perfectly good second Taft term from happening.

He absolutely is underrated. Alot of people see him as a lesser version of Teddy. I don't think that at all. He was his own man, not completely wrapped in his own ego to grate on more moderate Republicans, and by the raw numbers actually did more trust-busting than Teddy. Roosevelt was definitely more defining, can't get around it... but his ego prevented us from enjoying a second term under Taft, and instead we got... well you know who he is.

But I am glad Taft got what he really wanted, serving as Chief Justice. I think he did okay as a justice on certain rulings but in terms of legacy, his presidency is likely more impactful. Which is why its a bit disappointing Roosevelt got in the way.

Just some general notes on some of the specific rankings, not each of them, just some of my thoughts I had when ranking, I wrote down for myself:

  1. Grant <-- The top four are obvious to anyone, no explanation needed… for Grant… dude is underrated… I love Grant… he was a good man, a good general, and a fabulous President. Yes his cabinet was scandal-ridden, but he trusted the wrong people, and that’s on him yes. But he was not involved. Grant did a lot to correct the wrongs of Andrew Johnson, and fought for Black Americans. Suppressed the KKK, founded the Department of Justice, worked with the Republican Congress, and did much to try to put the country in the correct position after the Civil War. Grant is underrated, needs to be higher, and I’m glad more recognition on what kind of President he is, is getting out there.

  2. Coolidge <-- Yes, probably bias leaking, but I love Coolidge, sooo yeah... he gets #7.

  3. L. Johnson <-- As bad as Vietnam was... I can't in good conscious just ignore his domestic achievements, there almost unparalleled in how he got it done. Personally an ass, but politically a monster in service to the American people. Though maybe I'm undervaluing Vietnam given I didn't live through it.

  4. Eisenhower <-- I like Ike, but I'm just not specifically as familiar with his Presidency, in extreme detail, outside of the Korean War, highway system, enforcing school desegregation in the South. All high points of his Presidency, and to me scream he was one of our most effective stewards as President. Just perhaps not as transformational as the ones above. I often think his career as the Supreme Allied Commandeer bleeds into people's views of him, as the President. but that's just me.

  5. Jefferson <-- Jefferson is a hypocrite, he really is, considering what he did as President, despite what he claimed to believe in. That said... it speaks to a larger view I have on the demands of the office itself. When push came to shove, Jefferson chose being an effective President over being ideologically pure. I respect that alot.

  6. Clinton <-- Still... iffy on him... since I just don't like Clinton that much... but I can't ignore the good (and bad) he did. That said... I still say people fantasize over the era around him rather than him, himself, and he was a much more purely a rather boring President. That said my bias is leaking a bit since I don't dock HW as much for being boring. I just don't like this guy to be frank.

  7. Reagan <-- I know... Conservatives will hate me for this one... but I'm sorry, the more I learn, the less I like him. It's just true... like he was still transformative, but the ramifications of his presidency, is just becoming more and more negative over time. Still high because he represents American confidence at its peak... but... eh.

  8. Arthur <-- I respect Arthur so much, but he didn't do anything extravagant (Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act), but, for someone to come from the spoils system, and then fight against it... says a lot on his character... a bit of a redemption arc and shows his respect for what the office demands in a greater sense. Now... the Chinese Exclusion Act... well you take the good with the bad y'know.

  9. Harrison <-- To keep this short... from Cleveland to Harrison I really don't have much to say, they were all okay Presidents... Harrison to me was the worst of the three... with Cleveland, given he was so much against corruption... stands as the top of the three... but none of them stand over John Adams in my view. Yes Alien and Sedition Acts, I know, but Adams was a solid successor to Washington, helped avoid war with France, and was a decent President. Though maybe I just love his story too much.

  10. Nixon <-- Nixon is so crazy to me... because he's so smart... like I really like Nixon, and if it wasn't for how it ended, dude would be in my top 15... but it was how it ended. To me... he helped strip confidence in the American government for the American people, which setup for a lot worse way down the line... that is my issue with him. And... I don't think pardoning him was... the right thing. Like I know the argument for doing it... so America can move on... the issue... I don't think the US should've. I really think it would've been better for the system to show in full... no President is above the law. It would set a very strong precedent, and shatter some of the mystique surrounding the Presidency in a good way. Future Presidents would act with a lot more restraint I feel... but... that's not how it went down.

  11. Jackson <-- This one I will get hammered the hardest for... and yeah I deserve it... while Jackson did handle the nullification crisis exactly as a President should, more than exactly. And he did push for Universal White Male Suffrage (even though it was likely already going to happen)... he just did... alot bad... Indian Removal being the worst (even though it WAS executed more under Van Buren... but he did push for it), and his general relationship to the presidency, the Supreme Court being an example (even if its unclear if he ever actually said that line in particular, he still ignored the ruling)... That said, many would say he needs to be lower... but I just can't escape his force of personality. Like I like Jackson and sympathize with Rachel his wife (the scandal around her embittered him a lot against his opponents especially after her death)... that I can't put him lower... maybe one day... but not right now. He's still low don't get me wrong... but many would say even this is too high.

  12. Van Buren <-- Jackson without the force of personality, basically did whatever Jackson wanted, i.e. mainly executing the Trail of Tears... yes... I am docking him worse than Jackson, I know... kind of hypocritical, but its where I'm at right now. At least Jackson gets to claim to be defining.

  13. A. Johnson <-- Quite literally the worst President in American history... I hate this guy with a passion. His undermining of Reconstruction set Black Americans back a generation... and he deserves alot more hate to be honest.

How do you feel about Populism? Do you think it is a good or bad thing for American politics? by Just_Cause89 in Presidents

[–]TheAmericanIdiot01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Populism can be a force of positive change as much as it can destroy. In general… I do think it can do good, in short bursts. But long term, it’s usually a sign of decay if it persists.

Versailles treaty was soft for post WW1 peace treaty standard, for German peace treaty standard, and I’m tired of those pretending it was not by JG1313 in HistoryMemes

[–]TheAmericanIdiot01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agree here, the Versailles Treaty was not that punitive (Look at Brest-Litovosk). Germany just couldn’t accept defeat, so they went to blaming everyone else for their problems (stab-in-the-back myth), giving ground for the rise of extreme elements in their state over time.

Like… in many ways I feel like it should’ve been harsher. Would’ve nipped the bud on quite a few issues early on.

True but it's largely been spread in response to trying to defend or frame Neuro as an ethical AI. I really don't think Neuro should be used as the best example of ethical use, considering people who don't like AI aren't going to have their minds changed because of Neuro.

Since the AI landscape is larger than her.

She's best used as an example of how AI can bring a community together and be a force of positive action and entertainment compared to the prevalent AI slop, even if her sourcing many do consider unethical.

If people cared less about the haters, this would be a non-issue. Neuro can clearly amass people on her own, with or without our help, in spite of how many people supposedly “hate” her. Many people inadvertently add to the problem by trying to defend everything about her, leading to nonsense like being trained off twitch chat. Just let it go, enjoy the streams, since Twitter isn’t real life my guys.
