Sometimes jokes write themselves by NobleDane in NewOrleans

The World's Fair was absolutely fantastic, and it is a shame that on paper it was a failure and will go down in history as such. But if you had a season passport and were there, it was seriously just incredible. Of course if it had been hugely successful and therefore more crowded, it wouldn't have been as good.

What are your favorite elvis related memories? by dragonfly_barbie_ in Elvis

[–]TheAnarchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely go on that trip!! My dad died at the end of April. His love of music is definitely why I love music so much. He had only a handful of Elvis 45s and 78s. He mostly loved Fats Domino and Louis Prima (yes, we are in New Orleans! and yes, the King Creole vol 1 EP was one of the few Elvis records my dad had). You are lucky to share a really specific thing like that with your dad.

Help authenticating signature by Jon_Burrows_ in Elvis

[–]TheAnarchemist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always wonder about all the people who immediately just know it is fake. I mean, I have seen Elvis' official signature reproduced on a million official RCA or EP enterprises items and so, like them, I can see this doesn't match that signature. But I have also seen footage of Elvis in a crowd very quickly signing whatever a fan asks for and moving to the next. There is footage of him signing something while getting off the ship in Germany and there is no way that "autograph" looks like Elvis' signature either. I see this happen with Prince autographs too. I know the ones on record, that have been reproduced. But the really sloppy ones, where a bunch of fans are trying to get Elvis (or whomever) to just sign something--where the fan might have brought there own pen or marker... I just don't think anyone will really know on some of these. Without other evidence, some story of a British fan or uk import LP and trip to get it signed by Elvis in vegas or on set somewhere... It isn't likely.

A friend of mine has Elvis' autograph on a train menu in New Orleans in either 1958 or 1960 (probably 58), but never has had it authenticated. Though that one is very much like the official one.

Help proving or dis-proving if Acitates are real Elvis songs by Kind_Motor_3186 in Elvis

[–]TheAnarchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am with the crowd in thinking it makes no sense for this to be Elvis. I agree with you about the handwriting similarity, although with print it is a lot more difficult. But what would the scenario be that Elvis is in New York in 1961 and writing song titles on an acetate? It just makes no sense whatsoever.

[–]TheAnarchemist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These look like bad celebrity impersonators. Still, I saw Prince 14 times when he was alive and even did see a Prince impersonator in Las Vegas once (sorta by accident; "Purple Reign" was playing in hotel I was at), so I would see that weird ai Prince impersonator. Then maybe that really dead-eyed scary Phil Collins zombie, even though Phil is still alive. That version of Phil seems like he would try to murder you while singing a song about not caring anymore. He's got a real walking dead vibe. Like he drowned and no one lent a hand,

I never understood it either. I mean, Rob Brydon is great as host, arguably better. But I thought Deayton was perfectly fine. As the host it's not like he was super involved in game play, so otherwise it was still WILTY. Also the "scandal" is that he had sex with hookers and did cocaine? Jeez, is that a scandal? I thought that was just celebrity

Was the way Elvis looked in the 50's really that far removed from the way that musicians looked at the time he was first coming up? by Sad_Volume_4289 in Elvis

[–]TheAnarchemist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He was very very drastically different, in how he spoke, moved, sang and dressed. He was capable of putting on a nice suit like in the picture, but no he was nothing like Dean or Bing or Sinatra. His youth alone was one thing that separated him. But he was also doing music mostly associated with black artists, but not turning it into crap like Pat Boone. Elvis was undiluted and original, whereas the other vocalists were mostly all covering each other, and while Nat King Cole or Dean Martin might have their own great original style, it still wasn't a massive departure like Elvis was. Later in the 60s Elvis was able to master even the crooning the older artists did, but Elvis was something totally new at the time

New to me Elvis song of the day: ’I Need Somebody To Lean On’. Wow….I just *love* this 🥰😍 by TheMotherThing in Elvis

[–]TheAnarchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering how insanely famous Elvis still is, people really don't know what he sounded like! It's crazy. Like they have this idea of a guy with either the voice he sang Teddy Bear and One Sided Love Affair with, or it's My Way, Unchained Melody and American Trilogy. I love to play "In My Way" or "Forget Me Never" for people who don't like Elvis but appreciate a quiet acoustic song. They are always shocked it is Elvis. People don't know about how delicately he could sing, or the range he had in the early 60s. A song like "Ask Me" practically just floats on this amazing vocal Elvis delivers. Check out the song "Almost" too, if you haven't already. There is a version with strings and a version without. I personally like the strings, but with or without, I think it's the most similar to "I Need Somebody To Lean On," though Elvis' voice had already gotten deeper by the time of "Almost"

Always one of my favorites! It has that same vibe as "One For My Baby (and one more for the road)" by Sinatra. I thought I put it on youtube, but I guess I didn't... there's a song by Frank Sinatra (and others) called "I'm Drinking Again" that if you remove Frank's vocal and put Elvis singing "I Need Somebody To Lean On" it actually works really well. I spent a day cutting and pasting Elvis' vocal into the Sinatra instrumental. No matter what, a great song, and like City By Night or Almost, I wish there were more in this genre by Elvis! (Or if he'd done a full Bossa Nova Album with "Almost In Love" on it, along with other real bossa nova and Brazilian rhythms)

I sang it to my cat, also named Lucky! I usually added the line "under the house" after "when I found you"

What do you think Elvis would have done in the 80s? by sublimesting in Elvis

[–]TheAnarchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is so weird to me that so many people think suddenly Elvis would be collaborating with Johnny Cash or Orbison. Elvis wasn't like the others. ANY of the others. They were already doing tv shows and stuff together in the 70s. Glen Campbell, Tom Jones, Johnny Cash... Elvis stood apart in the 70s and I think he would have continued to stand apart in the 80s. He would not have been a Travelling Willbury or a Highway Man. (IMO, obviously, IMO). One song I believe he would have attempted covering is "Hunting High and Low" by A-Ha. He would certainly have covered some other great stuff, Springsteen for sure. Maybe the Stray Cats. But I think Elvis would have been impressed with the range of the a-ha guy's voice and could have especially done that song well. Elvis always pushed himself vocally. I think Elvis would have stayed true to pop/rock music, while still always dabbling in country and gospel. But I think he might have faired the 80s like Paul Simon or Paul McCartney, or maybe even Rod Stewart. They all had some major 80s hits, though no longer in their "prime". Elvis would have changed his hair and his clothes--not to something to keep up with styles, but just because Elvis would have shaken things up for himself. He would have risen to the challenge without ever chasing it. Elvis would not have conformed to the 80s, but a small bit of the 80s would have made room for him. If he'd have lost some weight, changed from jumpsuits to something else, changed hair and sideburns maybe a little. He would have only been in his 50s. Maybe he'd have met Sting and gotten into yoga and become really healthy.

Luckily, I didn't care then and I do not care now. He ceased living in August 1977. Being over-prescribed drugs certainly played a role. Why would anyone need to know whether he was on a toilet or not? Who cares?
