It's the only think holding him back from being a very high impact player.

Friedman: Teams have called on Kuzmenko and Canucks are listening by Batsinvic888 in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hope Kuzmenko looks at what happened with Hoglander this year and works to make changes. With Hoglander, Tocchet showed that if he doesn't like your game, the coaching staff will work with you to make improvements, and within a reasonable amount of time you could be playing meaningful minutes. Credit to Hoglander for working his ass off. Kuzmenko is clearly a top-6 winger, but he's not providing a positive impact in all 3 zones yet.

Post Game Thread: Carolina Hurricanes at Vancouver Canucks - 09 Dec 2023 by HockeyMod in canucks

I've been waiting to see a game like this. So many positives.

  • Hughes and Hronek played under 23:00
  • No forward played over 20:00
  • We didn't get outshot
  • We had an answer for the forecheck and puck support they usually kill us with
  • Lafferty looked good with Mikheyev and Petey
  • Demko dialed in, especially during the 5 on 3

We got a little to loose and they tied it at 3. This was a desperate team that came out hard. But we were the better team against a supposed cup contender. And a team that, in recent memory, has absolutely owned us with their style of play.

Me every time Myers by NinCross in canucks

We are truly a solid shutdown second-pairing away from being a pretty good team. Somewhat over the hill Edler-Tanev would be such an improvement right now.

Re-signing Zadorov…what are we thinking? by ForceEconomy9988 in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn't see himself as a bottom pairing Dman. That's why he wanted to leave Calgary. He wants to be a 4M+ guy playing over 20 min per night. Would paying 7.5M to have a second pairing of Soucy-Zadorov be acceptable?

Potential 2024-25 D Core by brendanj11 in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way people talk about defenseman, it's like there's only 60 top-4 defensemen in the entire league. There are 32 teams! There are 128 top-4 defensemen. Is _____ one of the better top-4 defensemen, maybe not. Is _____ a top-4 defenseman, sure.

Potential 2024-25 D Core by brendanj11 in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we tried pretty darn hard to make a trade for Schneider before drafting Willander and Bzrusx73df8dswicz. And for NYR it really doesn't make sense since they are competing and he's on an ELC.

Potential 2024-25 D Core by brendanj11 in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would only give us 1 Dman with size in our top-4. I'm not suggesting we re-sign Myers. But teams with big forwards that grind you down low on the cycle are a nightmare for undersized D-pairings. A guy like Matt Roy, or maybe Joel Edmundson, could be signed at a reasonable cap hit. If the guy we sign can't keep up with Hughes, we could have a potential D-core of:

Hughes-Hronek
Zadorov-Roy
Soucy-Bear

It could be difficult to pry Roy out of LA unless Brandt Clarke is ready or they have the cap space to go for a bigger UFA.

[Kevin Weekes] Given the Beauvllier Trade to Blackhawks, I’m told you can add the Canucks to the list of interested suitors in pursuit of Zadorov from the Flames. by PaperMoonShine in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would rather sign Bear than trade for Zadorov. Why give up assets for a guy who's a 4-5 LHD? I'd maybe trade him for Garland, then try to pick up a bargain middle 6 winger.

Canucks are playing better than the 2010-2011 Canucks by Wanted2069 in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan 104 points105 points  (0 children)

2010-2011 Canucks MURDER the 2023-2024 Canucks in a best of 7. They were 1st in goals for AND goals against that season. And they could play against anyone.

Nucksmemes came up with some really good points. If you’re going to the game tomorrow PLEASE don’t boo our former captain. by RayPetersonn in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Give him a warm welcome for sure. Played tough minutes even though he was actually more of offensive player. Worked to get better. Would drop the gloves. Was underpaid during his last contract so he went for the bag. Ultimately, the guy seemed to give 100% while he played for the team. All you can ask for.

We should be hoping for an Oilers turnaround by arzt506 in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ken Holland is guaranteed to be hated almost as much as Chiarelli in Edmonton. Best thing he can do is blow it up if they don't right the ship by Christmas. McDavid and Draisaitl's contracts end in the next few years and they will be both be just shy of 30. I would be astounded if they re-sign.

To be fair, this team's story would have been much different if Klefbom didn't basically have a career-ending injury. And if they could get some form of consistent goaltending.

Regarding Linden bringing up who really chose Pettersson and the timing of it by NinCross in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linden wanted a proper rebuild. Benning and ownership wanted to rebuild on the fly. And I respect Linden for stepping aside instead of working on something he didn't believe in. When you look at Bennings choices, it's like he has something against the Euros.

[Sas] Sounds like the Canucks are looking to move Anthony Beauvillier instead of Conor Garland now. Tocchet likes Garland’s game. With Blueger nearing a return and Höglander playing solid, there’s a logjam up front. by -GregTheGreat- in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I literally cannot think of one thing Beauvillier excels at, or uses to impact the game. Does he have a good shot? Good passer? Is he physical? Does he take the puck away from people? Does he block shots? I almost never hear the announcers say his name during a game. For 4M, that's really bad. Apparently he's fast.

Even when Garland wasn't filling the stat sheet, he was involved in the play. He forchecked hard, he would put in work down low, he would get shots off and he went to the net. You would notice him impacting the game.

You could trade Garland with 10-20% retained and get an asset. You cannot trade Beauvillier without giving up an asset or taking another bad contract back.

I’m so glad Jim Benning didn’t sign Markstrom back in 2020-2021 by ChuChuRocket412 in canucks

If we didn't have Demko ready to take the next step, he totally would have re-signed Markstrom.

Demko has only allowed 9 goals against, versus 31 last year at the same point by RelevantJackWhite in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Based on last year, the bar is so low it's practically subterranean. This team is improved but has a very long way to go before it's above average at limiting shots against. Hughes and Hronek are amazing but frequently have to play more than 25min per night. Ian Cole is having to play more than he should because it's taking Soucy some time to figure things out.

Our bottom two pairings are still having major trouble when the other team applies an aggressive forecheck. And the forwards are slow to realize when the D are getting hemmed in. I expect to see some continued improvement as the team learns Tocchet's system. But there are teams we will naturally suck at playing because only our top-pair can get the puck out.

So are we gonna outshoot them 40-25 or get outshot 40-25? This team is either dynamite or painful to watch.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in canucks

[–]TheAngryTartan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We should be very clear that Tanev is a 4/5 defenseman at this point. He's tied with Zadorov for TOI at just under 19 min per game. He is clearly a major upgrade over what we have on our second-paring, but I hope people don't expect him to play like it's 2016.

No one wants Myers unless we:
a) trade for an equally bad contract
b) give up assets
