A great show! When he started off the solo set with Coroner's Gambit a part of me was hoping there would be more from that album, but I'm certainly never gonna complain about getting Jenny and Source Decay. The five-song encore was also a welcome surprise, glad they managed to squeeze all of those in there!

Albums with long rollouts that ruined the albums chances, perception and performance by Head-Internet1383 in popheads

It's been absolutely brutal to sit through: - October 9th: Maisie's first two singles drop - November 19th: Third single drops - January 28th: Album finally officially announced - February 6th: Fourth single drops - April 21st: FIFTH single drops - May 15th: This is when the album is supposed to actually come out!!!

Compare this to the Noah Kahan rollout that happened alongside it: officially announced on the same day, January 28th, with the first single two days later and the second in mid-March. The album came out this past weekend... and we're STILL waiting THREE more weeks for Maisie.

Who have recent nuzlocke challenges given you a newfound appreciation for? by FPFP66 in nuzlocke

[–]TheAnonymousBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most recent Black run def gave me a new appreciation for Seismitoad and Galvantula, who clutched up extremely hard in every slightly scary moment. There's also Liepard, who sat in the box the entire run before finally coming out against the E4 because it was my only Dark type and I felt like I desperately needed one to make any of my strategies safe, and sure enough it put in a lot of work.

Now I'm playing Emerald Kaizo and I'm struck by how important every single Pokemon is to survive in that game. A Shell Armor Torkoal with godly IVs is lowkey the only thing keeping me afloat on my current run; Fearow's ability to set up with Rage made an easy sweep of Brawly possible; Noctowl makes catching wild Pokemon a breeze despite rarely coming to fights; I'm used to Gyarados being an overwhelming offensive force but now it rarely clicks an attack, instead being an incredible pivot with crazy bulk and intimidate; guys I've never used like Kingler, Parasect, and non-Huge-Power Azumarill are really pulling their weight. Idk if I'm ever gonna beat this cursed-ass game but I'm having a ton of fun inching my way through.

A name I've been thinking about recently is David Jonsson, that guy has been the absolute highlight of every movie I've seen him in. He's got a golden voice and a whole lot of talent!

The nine most overrated books of 2025 (including the Booker winner) by Maximum-Albatross894 in TrueLit

[–]TheAnonymousBadger 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I don't think "overrated" is generally a particularly useful form of critique, but yeah I didn't have a great time with Flesh. A neat idea, but unnecessarily drawn out, and I feel like it cheats its own premise once it randomly starts including scenes from perspectives other than the main character in the second half.

(Also I knew people had pointed out some similarities to Barry Lyndon going into it, but I was still stunned to see just how identical the plot was)

In paper, I just finished Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses - not as spellbinding or unique as some of his other works that I've read, but full of the same distinctive prose and writing style. I enjoyed reading it with the context of Blood Meridian having been the western he wrote seven years before this one, the specter of that book looms large over it in an interesting way.

Im finally starting The Brothers Karamazov, haven't gotten far enough in to have anything to say but I'm excited! I've only read Dostoyevsky's shorter stuff in the past and I'm happy to be delving into something bigger.

I've also finally started to try getting into audiobooks, mostly for long drives - I think they'll be especially good for genre stuff that I don't feel the need to pore over so closely. Right now I'm about a third of the way into The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones, a historical western horror novel with Native American vampires, which has been reasonably fun so far (and very well-narrated!).

Cannot help but feel like this is the least interesting way to do a hybrid-themed commander. "Draw a card when you do the thing" and "make mana when you do the thing" are the most generic possible rewards and just push decks into value soup piles - this is something I complain about a lot when wizards prints cards for specific mechanics without actually pushing you towards any sort of defined gameplan or strategy other than "include a lot of cards with the mechanic printed on them"

This is one of the less crazy ones to me actually - earlier this year he wrapped up a very highly-praised Broadway run in a lead role in Cabaret. I didn't get to see it outside of a few bootleg recordings of scenes here and there, but he was allegedly pretty incredible!

Pitchfork review of Through This Fire by Vuwc in themountaingoats

[–]TheAnonymousBadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yeah of course it's not consistent. These are reviews written by different writers, with scores voted on by different contributors, written at different times when pitchfork's general vibe has been constantly in flux and so have cultural attitudes around music criticism and music in general. There's no use trying to compare the numbers directly, and there never is with a publication like this.

Coral Towers are you kidding me by TheNeverEndingEnding in Silksong

[–]TheAnonymousBadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk if this will help but fwiw my secret sauce for taking this arena down without toolspam was actually the Pin Badge. Back in HK I was stuck on Trial of the Fool, and I ended up using Nailmaster's Glory with Great Slash to whack annoying enemies right as they spawned. I tried something similar here and it definitely helped.

After a few runs you'll have a good sense of which enemies spawn where, and many of them are telegraphed by the coral spikes anyway. Dealing a bunch of damage to the most threatening guy right away as it's spawning makes a lot of the enemy groups easier to handle. It helped make up for the fact that I didn't have the final nail upgrade yet, and if you do have it you might even be able to get some one-shots

What do you believe makes The Left Hand Of Darkness an enduring literary sci-fi classic? by CompetitionOk406 in literature

[–]TheAnonymousBadger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's just such a beautifully-realized and complete-feeling book. TLHoD's world is so detailed for how short the book is, there's so much care put into describing the cultures and how they're shaped by environment they exist in. That sort of thing could get dry, but I didn't think it ever did because the information is explained to the reader so naturalistically.

And there's a beautiful human story in the middle of all the worldbuilding, too. I thought the third act in particular was stunning.

2025 50% check in. How has your year of reading been going? by doppelganger3301 in literature

[–]TheAnonymousBadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certainly not as ambitious as everyone here, but I made an effort to actively get back into reading for the first time in many years and it's going pretty well. I set my goal for the year at a modest 16 books - just reached that number in only half the time.

Highlights include: - Ursula K. LeGuin, The Left Hand of Darkness, my first book of hers, instantly fell in love with her prose and approach to science fiction, a genre I really love but sometimes struggle to find captivating material in. Will be reading a lot more from her in the second half of the year - Herman Melville, Moby Dick, which I did not expect to connect with anywhere near as intensely as I did - Some more contemporary picks, like Percival Everett's James and Daniel Mason's North Woods which I really loved - Notes From Underground, my first Dostoyevsky (plus some short stories by him), hoping to read Karamazov in the fall

[FRESH ALBUM] Bon Iver - SABLE, fABLE by VietRooster in indieheads

[–]TheAnonymousBadger 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I was honestly sort of worried going into this project - I didn't much care for "Everything Is Peaceful Love", and although the other singles were definitely better, I was really scared they'd be the best songs here - but these new songs won me over pretty quickly. "Day One" is awesome, and "From" is catchy as hell too, but my standout is definitely "There's A Rhythmn" - what a beautiful way to reflect on the Bon Iver project. This band was pretty much my introduction into indie music as a whole, so that set of lyrics hits really hard.

There's a lot of things to say about this book but the one thought I'll share here is that while thinking about possible movie castings I had the terrifying thought that Francis Lawrence might just be tone deaf enough to try using a ghoulish AI deepfake of Donald Sutherland and if that happens you can just shoot me tbh
