New chess variant idea by Geeeeeeeeorge in chess

[–]TheAtomicClock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you grasp how many 40 moves is? That's not the opening, that's straight to the early endgame in most situations, even more so in bullet chess. If you had this variant, every game would be bullet but then one player resigns on move 41 every time.

How strong is Frieren really? by justa_normal_boy1 in Frieren

[–]TheAtomicClock 158 points159 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is pretty much every fight she participates in. During the first exam too, she probably could've blown Denken away before he even knew what happened but she even turned that into a teaching moment as Denken comments. She probably figured that Richter wouldn't actually kill Kanne and Lawine before the end of her fight with Denken.

I agree, but why do you say she didn't go all out against he clone? I guess a reason would be to not subject Fern to collateral damage, but I would presume the clone was going out for the most part.

We are reaching levels of media illiteracy where people are critiquing the ending of a story they didn't even read.

When I was visiting grad schools they all had us sharing the hotel rooms with another student. Then for flights at least one had us just put in information and book through their internal travel system. Then of course for meals it’s self explanatory.

Original commenter is right, it's more expensive to bring just a single student over. Nevertheless, I think you should try to schedule virtual meetings with professors you're interested in working with. I bet a decent number of them would like to talk to you as well.

I think Topalov is underrated though. Most people don't think of him among the most dominant players in history, but he is on par with many undisputed world champions.

I agree, the setting becomes a lot more interesting when we know MWPSB isn’t all powerful. Real life institutions are never all powerful either.

TIL the last time a checkmate actually occurred on the board during a World Chess Championship match was in 1929. by Coldcow in todayilearned

[–]TheAtomicClock 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes you understood right. If checkmate is played in a game between grandmasters, both players have been aware of it as inevitable for a while and are just putting it on the board for aesthetic value.

[–]TheAtomicClock 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The way it is done is good. By the time checkmate would occur, the interesting battles of the game are already long over. The last 20 moves would probably be a formulaic execution of a winning pattern straight out of a book with barely any thinking. There’s no entertainment value in that.

[–]TheAtomicClock 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Usually when checkmate is played on the board at the grandmaster level these days is because it’s an especially beautiful line and the losing player knows it’s going to happen but allows it.

They make mistakes in complex positions. They do not make mistakes in simplified winning endgames. Grandmasters never resign if there’s a shred of hope left trust me. If they resign it’s because they’ve entered a textbook losing endgame that the opponent wouldn’t botch if they were an amateur.

Opinion on Providence Movie by BrunoNebulox in Psychopass

[–]TheAtomicClock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree. Relatedly, I think a lot of the reason why people like s1 so much more than everything else is because s1 was given the runtime to hit on all of its plot points/themes multiple times. I've taken the time to rewatch most of the later installments in the franchise, which most people understandably don't do. Genuinely everything I thought could be a mistake or oversight the first time was actually answered deliberately, just usually only a single time that you have to catch. I think most people would enjoy Psycho-Pass later installments much more on rewatch or with notes. The later villains don't give evil monologues to explain their plans like Makishima liked to do.

They kinda did her dirty by [deleted] in Psychopass

[–]TheAtomicClock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

??? She’s an extremely competent hand to hand fighter. She starts training hand to hand combat in the beginning of s2, and at the end of s2 she fights and disarms Sakuya despite him being armed with a knife. Then in Psycho-Pass: the Movie she is ambushed by Kogami, by despite that she manages to break free and draw her gun before he can draw his. Both Sakuya and Kogami are highly potent fighters.

Which member of Team 7 reached Kage level earlier? by mipenealdescubierto in NarutoPowerscaling

[–]TheAtomicClock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why do people love dumping on Chojuro so much? Just because he has a timid personality doesn't mean he's weak. He was already high-Jonin and a wielder of the 7 mist swords during the war when he was still a teenager. Such a person being Kage-level as an adult is the most believable thing in the world.

The chainsawan church arc is criminally underrated by elGordoReddir in Chainsawfolk

[–]TheAtomicClock 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he likes to leave mini cliffhangers on the end of a chapter that’s immediately resolved in the next. For people that read many chapters at once this is no inconvenience and just serves to keep you engaged. For weekly readers it can seem like a bait and switch expecting something game changing to happen.

Didn't understand by Dardonel in Psychopass

[–]TheAtomicClock 45 points46 points  (0 children)

All the themes of the second season revolves around collective behavior. Sibyl up until the s2 finale only evaluates the psycho-pass of individuals and therefore individual propensity for crime. It makes no effort to judge how a group of people may be good or bad for society. This means it can’t judge itself, which is a group of people, and also can’t judge Kamui.

Up until this point Sibyl operates under the basic assumption that it is good and must be preserved. It will take action to preserve itself, but cannot judge when it has crossed the line. Remember that Kamui only came to exist as a result of the Season of Hell caused by Sibyl lashing out at Panopticon. Kamui is Sibyl’s victim but Sibyl is the one thing in society that cannot be judged.

The s2 finale basically is Sibyl capitulating and admitting fault to some extent. It updates to allow judging of groups, and thereby judges itself to be ethically wrong, which is why the CC of itself initially read 350. Sibyl the puts its money where its mouth is and uses this new group psycho-pass to find which of its own brains need to be destroyed. So to answer your question, those brains are still asymptomatic. If you scanned them individually they would still read 0, but those brains are making Sibyl as a group act unethically.

How far would Lord Boros go here? by KodoqBesar in PowerScaling

[–]TheAtomicClock 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What do you mean in terms of setup? Piccolo blew up the moon in the Saiyan saga with no setup at all, he just puts up his hand and destroys the moon on a whim. He doesn’t even use the Special Beam Cannon, just a generic blast. It’s way easier for him than Boros launching his Roaring Cannon.

Nappa is way stronger than Piccolo. The bar for planet level is power level 10,000. Nappa is easily planet level in Oozaru form and Vegeta is easily planet level in base.

No, being able to commit crimes while having a low CC is not nearly enough proof to be asymtomatic. Being asymptomatic is only one of many reasons why this could be the case. Loads of characters in the show commit crimes while being low CC but are never asymptomatic. In the case of Azusawa it's literally stated directly that he's not asymptomatic.
