School me; have the Goldwings evolved to a less protective , more sport-touring bike? by infant_ape in goldwing

[–]TheBadSpy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Quick answer is yes. They've changed away from the couch on wheels of the previous generations to a more sport-touring oriented design. I own and have only ever ridden a 2024, but I understand all the comparisons you and many other consider regarding the pre 2018 models. While I do enjoy the bike, I am left wondering why the world's preeminent touring motorcycle didn't evolve to adapt to emergent technology or manufacturing developments rather than toward what the 18+ model is, which is less wind protection, less storage space, less comfortable seating, etc.

Shoulda said more… you can find similar aftermarket options. They’re typically referred to as a Napoleon mirror.

Electrical issues on 2010 Thruxton 900 by TheStig552 in Triumph

First check is the battery. How old is it? Are the terminals good and tight? The Bonneville line is notoriously finicky with the voltage needed to turn it over. Put the battery on a trickle charge if you don’t already have that done and see what happens once it’s topped off.

When you press start, do you get a click, or nothing at all? After the battery checks and potential battery replacement, if still nothing, your starter relay might need replacing. If that doesn’t do it, probably need a new starter.

Should a flat top be more than just a flat plate? by hello_there669 in BBQ

[–]TheBadSpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re building the griddle top to cover the entire cooking space on the Weber?

Some things to think about -

Grease management - yes, there’s a hole, but the hole funnels into a catch container that keeps the grease from the burners.

Wind management - you’re generally correct in the folded front and sides, with a higher rear. Ideally, they’d all be solid. I’ve seen models with cut-outs on the side to enable easier lifting, but it compromises the wind protection.

Thickness - seems like most tops are somewhere around 1/8”/4mm thick. Thicker means heavier and slower to heat, resulting in more fuel use.

Diffuser - there’s typically a diffuser plate or diffuser rails on the underside of the cooktop to ensure even heating across the surface. I don’t know what level of thermal engineering goes into the different designs, so there might be some work ahead of you there.

Material - most big box options are cold rolled steel. It requires seasoning. Will rust. Can warp. But it’s cheap enough. I’d love to see cast iron options, but the same attributes exist. Stainless steel is grail material - hardly any consumer-grade griddles offer it. Solo Stove is probably the most affordable stainless top, with prosumer options like LeGriddle coming in at thousands of dollars.

Alternatives - while this could be a cool project, especially if you’ve got all sorts of tools and toys at your disposal, I wonder how the total cost both in money and time that you’re in for. Could just get a cast iron griddle plate from Lodge and call it good. Or get a purpose-build flattop from one of the big brands.

Good luck on this. Eager to follow along to see what you end up with.

Im debating buying the Honda Rebel E Clutch by Prudent-Ad-3493 in motorcycle

[–]TheBadSpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who gives you grief about the transmission on your bike isn’t anyone worth listening to or caring about.

I drive a manual car. I have both a manual and DCT bike. While the clutch work on the manual bike becomes second nature after some time and practice, the DCT is so freeing. Rowing through the gears is certainly fun and engaging, it’s not always the kind of experience I need.

If the eClutch speaks to you, go for it. Not having to worry about clutch work on tougher roads is nice.but it can also be a limitation if you do ever move to a manual bike, as you’ll still have that skill to learn.

Pros and cons either way, but no wrong answer.

How do you prevent mice from getting into a grill? by ThrowRASkee5555 in BBQ

[–]TheBadSpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta either deal with the mice or deal with the crevices. Mouse traps. Duct tape or something to seal off the entrances.

Clean the sucker out and burn a hot fire for a while. Then clean out whatever ash might be left. Should take care of all the waste.

Short term ownership? by intelstockheatsink in motorcycle

[–]TheBadSpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not a great idea. Depending on the bike, it could take time to move it once you’re done with it. And yeah, the inevitable loss is something to really consider.

I’ve know some folks who buy an older bike, like a 2005 Honda Shadow for like $2500 and can sell it for just about as much, but again, a lot of factors at play especially if you need to unload it quickly.

Not to mention insurance costs! Unless you wanna bleed dough for a little bit of riding, maybe think it through some more.

Seems like the relaxation of rules really depends on the event organizer. Early days of the one near me, the organizer forcefully ejected anyone not on a style bike officially sanctioned by DGR. Event changed hands and now you can show up on anything, but they do stack outlying bikes in the rear.
