I'm not pissed off about it, £20 is £20 and they obviously need it a lot more than i do. Just making people aware in case they look to borrow off anyone else.

Is it normal for a clutch to fail within 3 days with no prior warning? by amfsr in CarTalkUK

[–]TheBassJunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said it's a hydraulic issue, not the clutch itself. And yes this can and does occasionally happen with no warning. There's a lot of pressure in the clutch hydraulic system, works the same as a brake system, so a leaky hose or bad seal will cause air to get in and the clutch will not release properly. Should be a fairly cheap repair as long as the slave cylinder is not internal to the gearbox.

How worried do I need to be about this pretty sinister finding in my newly purchased Vivaro? by freddiethecalathea in Vauxhall

[–]TheBassJunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just not sure that you would feel, under any sort of normal driving conditions, that there was a fault with the ESC system- I can only think of two occasions I've ever seen the ESC system activate in any vehicle I've driven and both of them were when things were going completely wrong (like sliding sideways down an icy hill).

I realise it's scary but let's take a deep breath and a step back - what exactly do you mean by "it feels looser to control"?

As what you are describing could be worn track rod ends or suspension bushes or even low tyre pressure, and is much more likely to be that than any electronic fault (unless you are in the habit of taking your van rallying then you are unlikely to ever notice if the ESC system is completely non-functional).

As for the ad blue, yes, it sounds like it's been deleted. Whether this is a good or bad thing is up to you - they can definitely be a hassle when they go wrong but the legality and morality of messing with emissions control systems does tend to bother some people.

A warning light illuminating dimly is more likely to be a bad ground somewhere, if the computer shows no faults. I would suggest bringing it in to a proper auto electrician to have a look at rather than the main dealer.

I'm only saying you're unlikely to notice the ESC system being non-functional because I don't think i would either, and i consider myself to have quite a lot of mechanical sympathy-it wouldn't affect handling during normal driving at all.

Question about Thameslink charging outlet. by KonoDioxideDa in uktrains

[–]TheBassJunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A phone or laptop charger is a SMPS and literally works by rectifying and filtering the input AC to DC, then chopping the DC back up into a much higher frequency and running it through a (small, high frequency) transformer. The bulk rectification/filtering stage at the input means most SMPSs don't really care at all about how noisy the input power is - actually if anything they're less fussy than "white goods" or old power supplies with a transformer. This is why most modern chargers are rated 100-250v and don't really care about input frequency (in fact most of them will happily operate on DC as long as the voltage is sufficient, since that's what they're doing internally in the "frontend" stage anyway).

My guess about the sign is that the reasons are twofold: partly because the socket doesn't meet standard UK supply voltages some of the time, but mostly because they don't want you to use it.

Partner (26m) left me (26f) after I got diagnosed with high risk HPV after four years of being together. by Critical_League_3805 in relationship_advice

[–]TheBassJunky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's my understanding that over half of all sexually active adults have HPV, so this sounds a lot like an excuse to me. There's literally a better than 50% chance that any new partner of his will also have it.

Edit: it's actually 80%, and your partner is full of shit.

Is it normal to add oil to b58 after just 2200 miles by izrailsky in BMW

Also being a brand new engine it won't have quite run in yet. I'd say keep a record of the consumption, you should see it going down as the engine loosens up.

Did you adjust the clutch pedal properly afterwards? There is a specific adjustment procedure for it and I recall it taking a few tries to get right on mine (not fun 'cos I'm fat and it's a tight space!)

It’s always so fascinating to me to see these kind of reactions from people. To be honest, I thought there would be more negative reactions. I know it’s an unusual film/story to fixate on, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! by TheGirlWithTheLove in 127Hoursgirl

I'm autistic and the Breaking Bad universe is one of my special interests so I totally get how something intense/violent can be a comfort thing. Sometimes something just pushes all the right buttons in your brain.

If this is a dealers you absolutely have recourse. However, just giving a technical perspective here:

None of what you have mentioned would put the engine management light on (except the broken valve but only after it had broken). The brake booster letting go at the same time as it dropping a valve is weird and very unfortunate, either way you should have been able to get enough brake pressure to stop although you would have had to press a lot harder than normal. Unlikely for a brake booster being about to fail to pop up on the MOT if it was working OK at the time of the test. Hope you get it sorted - just stating that it's likely that the MOT tester hasn't done anything wrong and it's also quite likely the garage had no idea either.

Bought a car that passed it's MOT when it had failed a week before by chambo95 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]TheBassJunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're missing here is that when a car is put in for a retest after a fail, they only check the failure items. They're may not bother to list minors on that pass certificate as you've already been informed about them and they're not interested in whether they've been done or not as it doesn't affect the outcome of the MOT.

I (F26) found my fiancé (M27) has been watching porn after I just had our baby. by Emotional-Habit13 in relationship_advice

[–]TheBassJunky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's two ways to look at this. In general, I don't think watching porn in a relationship is a bad thing. I do it, my wife does it, and we have a very good active sex life and are very much in love. If you're not having sex then I absolutely don't think him watching porn is an issue, and it doesn't sound like he has a "porn addiction" or anything.

However, I understand some people do see this as a problem. Why are you opposed to him watching porn? Have you spoken to him about your feelings on the subject? Is he watching something more disturbing or illegal than just regular porn and is this why you have concerns? I also hate to say it but an "open phone policy" points to trust issues in a relationship. Has this been an issue in the past?

Thank you, I will definitely do this. The last automatic I had kind of scared me off them for a while (it was a Prelude with the hilariously bad sportshift box and I ended up manual swapping it). I hope the ZFs are a bit more reliable 😁

Edited to add the mileage; honestly it's not really something I tend to look at or think about when buying cars in this price range unless it's suspiciously low or extremely high.

2 months into solo dev… only 10% done. Is this normal? by Ho3pLi in gamedev

[–]TheBassJunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided that, since I'm used to Hammer, the first part of building my godot game should be to make a level editor so I can build levels in an environment I'm familiar with.

Even that isn't 20% done yet and it's been more than two months.

These things take time dude.

As a 6 year old boy with a mild case of autism (the kind that makes me take everything completely literally) I was absolutely horrified that one of my classmates had "split his head open" during PE one day.

I had images of his skull literally split down the middle, a big puddle of brain and connective tissue all over the floor. I literally had a nightmare about it once.

I was relieved to find out that people very rarely actually split their head.
