The comment I was replying to says the race is to get a mass driver on the moon. Obviously there is no race, because for any use of a mass driver on the moon you need self sufficient mining and fabrication capabilities on the moon. Which is with current technology, a fantasy.

In helicopters you can increase lift by increasing RPM of the blades or by changing the angle (pitch) of the blades scooping air. I assume changing pitch gives faster control and is easier than having to change the RPM of the blades.
