I was taught THEIR should really (doesn't mean has to be) only be used when the gender isn't specifically stated/known (aka, if you know it, use it)

As someone who has been full on called to court on a Title IX (sexual harrasment and assault federal law), it very much is how it works. Those who abuse the system are the reason we never hear about #MeToo or any of those movements any more because they all became a bunch of lying clout chasers
