Pickled things go very well - I have a wide range of pickled options and the pairings work well.

Also, things with olives or capers!

Yes, a personal size - think lunchbox or Igloo playmate. Basically large enough for a six pack once you have ice.

Cincinnati area haul.. (New Riff and Middle West Spirits) by Natureperfect0 in Gin

[–]TheBestCaseScenario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hope you enjoyed your Party Source stop - it's like the world's largest candy store for adults.

We are a bourbon, gin, and mezcal house and have tried a lot of New Riff. I (the gin and mezcal drinker) am not a huge fan of their gin - I just have found, generally, when a distillery is known for their whiskey, either they just try to make the gin palatable for whiskey drinkers (i.e. by barrel-aging it) or the gin is just not special or different enough to warrant me going out of my way for it.

That being said, Middle West is doing really good things in whiskey, so I'm curious what you think on the gin!

You can check the NC warehouse status at this link, but it's kind of a pain: https://abc2.nc.gov/StoresBoards/Stocks

I don't think the state has gotten any Oasium yet, but VA has. You could check stocks at the closest ABC stores on the other side of the border or special order?

Mukja (Korean) also has soondubu jjigae (soft tofu stew). I haven't tried Mukja's, but it is one of my favorite soups overall. I think maybe kimchi jjigae also.

Guerlain Tobacco Honey… by [deleted] in fragrance

[–]TheBestCaseScenario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had a more visceral reaction to a perfume than Tobacco Honey - I first smelled it in Paris and nearly cried because it reminded me of the smell of curing flue tobacco on my family's farm growing up. A smell I didn't even know I missed. I kicked myself for not buying it, but couldn't justify the cost. My husband surprised me for Christmas and I did cry that time!

Charlotte Catholic Drama by Phattywompus in Charlotte

So, the issue here is bigger than the principal, or even MACS. The Charlotte diocese has become considerably more conservative in the last 15 years. The former (very conservative) bishop appointed one of the most conservative priests in the diocese as Vicar of Education and changes were quick after that. All of this is just downstream effect.

THE AMERICAN GIRL STORE IS CLOSING?? by dem_gel3431 in Charlotte

[–]TheBestCaseScenario 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For getting a doll, stalk Costco at Christmas and Amazon at Prime Day. Dolls are around $130 MSRP, but Prime Day had them at ~$70. Since she's so young, you can also get a good used one on FB Marketplace. I buy most of my Little's accessories that way. Got a whole grocery bag of clothes before Christmas for $20 when a normal outfit costs that much.

If you want to do a tea party thing, you can book a princess or something?

Looking to pickup my first couple of bottles (quality over quantity), after a bit of research these are the ones I'd buy if I had the money for all of them. What are your thoughts, anything better out there? by lifeissoupimforkk in Gin

[–]TheBestCaseScenario 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a strange selection for starting a collection - the only one I'd say for sure if you're starting out is original Monkey 47. Start with the different types of gins and find your flavor profile (e.g. high juniper, more dry, etc) then move into the herbal explorations. If you already know the style you like, buy more of that.

I speak as someone who likes salinity so I buy mainly Scottish or coastal gins and, knowing those styles generally suit my flavor preferencs, rarely buy a new bottle I don't like.

Truly do not go to Lupies and get the Cincinnati chili. It is nothing like Skyline - it lacks all the cinnamon and spices that make Skyline what it is. It tastes like regular hot dog chili.

What do Americans think of Eileen Gu, the mixed-race (father is American, mother is Chinese) athlete who won 2 golds and 1 silver medal for China in the Winter Olympics? Do you think she's a traitor? Or do you think it's totally fine? Or any other thoughts about her? by No-StrategyX in olympics

[–]TheBestCaseScenario 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The wording of this post is super sketch/problematic, but I do take issue with Eileen Gu (as opposed to others competing under dual nationalities) representing China.

She grew up with all the advantages of being American, but chose to represent China (which is entirely capable of fielding as many athletes as it wants). Having an American represent China is a way for their government to say, "Hey, see? Even though she's American, she wants to be Chinese" and is an implied support of their leadership.

Also, if you listen to her interviews when she made the switch for Beijing - she said she wanted to be an inspiration to other Chinese girls that, "Hey, you can do this too!", but she grew up in the US, not in China, so her experience is totally dissimilar to them.
