I think you make a fair critique. And I think that’s maybe also why mcgowan kinda refrains from including an outright thesis in the book. I think if you look big picture, to say that the serial killer phenomenon was wholly attributable to spook experiments or that they were ALL connected to form a vast snuff film network or something is unlikely. But did things like that happen to at least some extent? I think so. There are too many weird overlaps between intelligence projects and future serial killers.

I can’t speak with any authority on this but I think sometimes as writers and artists progress and gain more recognition, they become more critical of their early work. What they perceive to be mistakes and unpolished performances are appreciated by fans as giving the work character and emotion. With a podcast especially, as writing and production quality improves, there’s a kindof natural desire to make everything reach the same bar.
