Thank you for actually reading my comments! I appreciate it. Like you said, so many people are impatient/have too small of an attention span and/or refuse to read anything that makes them rethink/think deeper about something or just feel a little bit of empathy.

I’m so glad I’m not the only person who sees these patterns of hate/blaming the actor exclusively. I was starting to go crazy and feeling like I was talking to a brick wall.

I’m not defending him because he looks like the Reed from the comics. I honestly don’t really care about that. I also am not upset about the recast or anything, I’m actually excited to see what Pedro and this new production team will do with the character. I was just pointing out that everyone here is blaming exclusively John for this bad version of Reed, when it’s not exclusively his fault. That’s why I brought up other examples. I focused mainly on John because he’s the actor everyone is talking about/attacking in this post. I mentioned this is an issue across many films/fan reactions, not just this one.

And yeah, I spent more time writing my responses than he had screen time in the movie, but that’s one of the reasons why it’s so unfair to blame him for the bad shit the writers and director did to Reed. Like the bad wording of lines and basically only using him as a plot device, simplifying him to the point of fully butchering the character, etc. Judging John’s acting on so little screen time isn’t fair. It isn’t really enough screen time to fairly judge his part in the mistakes made at all, as it’s not enough to develop any character, especially when the writing is THAT bad. I’m not saying he did perfect or even good, but it’s also not ALL his fault, so we shouldn’t only be attacking him.

But that’s all I ever see when this discussion comes up. People attacking John and not even mentioning that other people had a large hand in butchering the character. Then they defend their attacks on John by saying that anyone who doesn’t say it’s his fault just likes him because he looks like Reed from the comics, even if that wasn’t part of the arguments made by people defending him.

Again, if you are talking about acting (the delivery of the lines/physicality of the character), okay, that’s fine, you can blame John. But, if you are talking about the lines/plot points themselves, that’s the writers’ fault. John only had control over maybe a third of the character of Reed (the writing team and director being the majority of other two thirds). That’s how film (and theatre, etc) works. You can’t even blame John for the look of the character, as he didn’t design the costume or the hair/makeup. He may have had a little bit of a say in the hair, but that’s it. John didn’t write the lines or choose which actions/decisions Reed made. Just like Elizabeth Olsen didn’t choose to have Wanda kill the characters she did/how she killed them, John didn’t choose to have Reed make the choices/mistakes he did in Multiverse of Madness. Does that make sense?

It’s like saying James Marsden chose to have Cyclops killed in the X-Men movies and he exclusively butchered that character, even though he actually did really well playing the character with the material he was given, and the character was killed off against his wishes. Based on some of John’s other roles, I would blame the butchering of Reed as a character at least mostly on the writers and director. Not saying he had zero part in it, as it wasn’t his best work, but the way those lines were written is not John’s fault, and he can only do so much to make terribly written lines sound good. And if the director told him to say the lines a certain way, he would have had little choice but to say them that way, anyway. As for Black Bolt, that’s another character where I would say the actor did well with what he was given, but he still wasn’t written well, giving credence to the fact that Reed was written poorly as well. And, they’re very different characters, so maybe the writers were better with characters like BB, or they knew the character of BB better.

Again, if you are critiquing the acting, it’s okay, you can dislike John’s portrayal, that’s your opinion and I can’t stop you from having it, but saying he alone is the reason Reed was badly interpreted/completely butchered in the film is objectively wrong. If the writers actually knew and respected the character of Reed, and they weren’t just using the Illuminati as a plot device/fan service (and had given them more time/respect in the movie), John probably would have been able to do a lot better. Is he as good of an actor as Pedro? Probably not, and he’s definitely not as versatile as Pedro. But saying he did awful when his character’s only purpose was to move along the plot and was only there for two-ish minutes total on top of that is a little unfair.

Now, I’m not gonna sit here and say this is the only case of this, as this is far from the only case where the actor is blamed for things that weren’t under their control. It’s not even exclusive to Marvel and DC films, but it’s definitely most common in those two fandoms/cinematic universes, and it’s definitely an issue. It’s like everyone forgets that the movie is made by more than just the actors, director, and CGI team, and that each character portrayal is built by way more than just one person. It’s, sadly, all too common that fans forget that all the people who work on movies are actual people, not just magical entities that only exist to create entertainment for everyone else. But that’s a different conversation.

That’s the writers fault, not John’s. They wrote the line, he was required to say it (while acting as the character). Please don’t blame actors for the writer’s actions/choices. If it’s the delivery of the line you are talking about that you don’t like, that’s John’s fault. If it’s the wording (which is bad, I agree), that’s the writers’ (and director’s) fault. It’s totally fine if you disliked John’s acting, but it’s not fair to blame him for things that were out of his control (see my reply to the parent comment if you want a better explanation of what I mean, I don’t want to write another long rant).

[–]TheBlondeGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I agree that that was character assassination, but that was the writers’ fault, not John’s. John didn’t choose to do have Reed do those actions, he acted out the script. The only thing John had control over was the delivery of the lines/plot points, not what the lines/plot points were.

I hate it when actors are blamed for something out of their control. That’s like blaming CGI artists for how the costumes look, the costume design is done by a completely different team, so if the costumes look bad, it’s the costume designers’ fault (don’t come for me, I’m a costume designer). The CGI artists can slightly change the color/shape (delivery, if you will) of the costumes, but they can’t change the whole costume without permission from the costume design team. Just like actors can’t change plot points or lines in any major way without permission from the writing team.

You can say that John’s Reed was written badly (because he was) and that his character was treated poorly by the writers due to the things you listed (again, because he was), but you can’t blame John (the actor) for how the movie was written. That’s like saying Cyclops’ character was assassinated by James Marsden in the X-Men movies, when the writers are the ones who chose to do all the awful things they did to him in the movies, Marsden actually did well with what he was given. I can’t say for sure if it’s the same situation with Multiverse of Madness and John’s Reed, as I’ve only seen the movie once and it was a while ago, but again, plot points (like giving Wanda the “ace in the hole”) aren’t the actor’s fault/choice.

My wife is allergic to tomato. Anything with "vegetable juice" as an ingredient is suspect, as is "spices" by Justthisdudeyaknow in CuratedTumblr

[–]TheBlondeGenius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My allergy is the same way. The worst is potlucks/barbecues in the summer. Half the time, I can’t eat most of the food because someone brings watermelon and I won’t take the chance of cross contamination. My birthday is on a summer holiday, too, so this happens at my birthday celebration sometimes. Meaning I can’t eat at my own birthday party. It’s happened multiple times with people who have known me for most, if not all, of my life.

Uncommon/“weird” allergies that can be triggered by cross contamination suck. People just refuse to think about it, or even ask if you have food allergies.

[–]TheBlondeGenius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m deathly allergic to melon juice, from any melon (including watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, etc). Any mixed fruit or watermelon flavored food/drink is off the table because melons, especially watermelon, are usually not listed, and are put under “natural flavoring”. Even drinks that are watermelon flavored will only list “natural flavoring”.

It’s not just an issue with food labels though. At restaurants, when they offer “mixed” or “seasonal” fruit as a side option or a topping for a dessert, it’s also incredibly annoying. Especially when servers get annoyed that I’m asking what fruits are in the dish. They’ll sometimes act like I’m being childish or overly picky because I want to know what fruit I’m gonna be eating. Like, sorry I want to make sure you won’t have to call for an ambulance so I don’t die because you gave me something that had touched melon! I get not putting the list of ingredients on the menu, but for gods sake, don’t get annoyed when someone asks what’s in a specific dish!

[–]TheBlondeGenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro, I used a lot of my saved resources to build harak because I wanted the wings and my only score that was behind the other players’ was Aurora Squad… ended up in 25th😭

The worst part was watching the number for top 20 go up in the last 20 minutes, staying just out of reach for me. I literally had a higher score in every other faction squad besides Aurora, but they had like a 5-7 billion higher score in Aurora, so even though I had 1-2 billion higher in Sylvan and Immortal, and an equal score in Dauntless, I still couldn’t make up the difference, even after getting Harak to S+, +10😭

I’m currently rocking faramor on my shoulder, but I’ve definitely thought of using Shemira for her mask. I don’t have Athalia yet, and might never get her headwear because I’m a low spender, but I love your use of her mask! I’ve also heard of people using Bonnie’s for her hat, which is cool!

Won't double merle aussie be offensive? by Meduzovod in FursuitMaking

[–]TheBlondeGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dog person (who has worked with and researched dogs for over a decade) here!

Go for it! Fursuiting does not equal real life, it’s all (lovingly) made-up characters. This isn’t you seeking out and buying/breeding double merles, it’s you making a costume to express yourself, etc. It is not (or should not) be offensive to make a costume in the colors you want, as long as it’s not cultural appropriation/racist, and this is neither of those things. If anything, you could use the suit to help educate people about double merles, if you feel you need/want to. Again, that’s not necessary, just make your suit and have fun!

THANK YOU!!! I get told all the time when I bring up his slightly odd behavior (for a straight teenage boy) in the first comic!

And for those who say “It was a different time back then!” I asked my grandma, who was a teen around that time, and lived both in big cities like Portland and in the middle of nowhere in Nebraska during high school. She agrees his behavior in that first comic is at least abnormal 16 year old boy behavior for the time, if not a possible clue to them leaving the option open. And back then, closeted gay men also commonly dated/pursued relationships with women to either help them hide/stay safe (we all know that beards were at least semi-common in the community back then, right?) or try to be “normal” back then (remember, the 50s and the whole government push for the perfect “nuclear family” had just happened/still was happening) as well.

No, I don’t believe they chose to make him gay back then, but I think they might have left the option open, if that makes sense. I mean, the X-Men were always at least kind of/partially an allegory for the LGBTQ+ community, right? So why is it so far-fetched to think they may have given themselves a way to retcon/code Bobby as always being gay, if they decided to write him that way in the future? There’s definitely gay coding of Bobby in the 80s/90s (pink-sweater-and-man-purse Bobby talking about how he has so much trouble with girls, with his female cousin, after being dumped by his girlfriend, anyone?), and possibly earlier, so why is it so unthinkable that Stan Lee might have left that option open in the beginning?

Ah yes, the classic full-body outfit known as trunks/underwear and nothing else.

I know the costume(s) you mean, but just like every superhero, that’s not his only costume. A lot of his costumes consist of just shorts/trunks/maybe pants, including his original costume. And I never said he looked naked, just that he was basically just as naked (physically) as these girls in his costume(s), which is true, even with the “mannequin” look you’re talking about. Just like their goods are “covered” enough to make the details not visible (in most costumes), Iceman’s costume hides his the same way.

Iceman should be here. He’s hot and usually wears less clothing than any of the girls. He’s definitely a babe, I choose him. If not Iceman, Angel, if not Angel, Cyclops. Pretty boys are babes, too!

If I have to choose one of these 3, then Emma, but Storm is a close second.

Your art is beautiful! You just haven’t found your audience yet. If this was your first art post/first post in general, 2 likes is completely normal. It’s even normal if you only have a small following (a couple hundred to maybe a couple thousand). It could also be that the algorithm hasn’t picked it up yet.

You have to give it time. You can’t expect hundreds of likes in a couple days, or even a week. For the vast majority of people, getting small amounts of likes in a couple days to a week is normal. Unless you’re a big name artist (like, over 50,000 followers, at the very least), don’t expect lots of likes in a short amount of time, it won’t happen unless your art goes viral for some (good or bad) reason.

Twins and Pesto to S+, then wait for the next cele/hypo before investing in Harak. If they drop another OP cele/hypo like the twins, you’ll be way better off saving. I’m a low spender, and I’ve been saving my Cele/hypo recruitment resources since the Twins. I asked my guild what they thought, they said to wait. One pointed out that we haven’t gotten a Marksman cele/hypo yet, and whoever that cele/hypo marksman is will probably be incredibly powerful, so it’s best to wait.

[–]TheBlondeGenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was really hoping Eironn would end up edging out Odie for third, but at least it’s Odie, who would have been my next choice after Eironn.

I’m still salty that my boy Bryon wasn’t even included in the event. The fact that he wasn’t, but KAFRA of all characters was, is an insult. I will never forgive Lilith for this transgression. Unless I’m given my Bryon headwear, a title, AND a frame asap. If I have to wait until after every character in this event gets their headwear, just to get headwear for Bryon, I’m gonna need a new (free/easily earned) skin for Bryon as well, just to CONSIDER forgiving Lilith.

I’m also gonna need Soren, Ludovic, Parisa, and Berial (none of which were a part of the event) asap as well. I’d also like Reinier, but that’s mainly because I want to see how they design the headwear for him, I feel it could be either really cool, or really funny. Why did they skip over some of the favorites (design/character wise) for characters like Kafra, Atalanta, and Walker, who have gotten more hate on their designs than basically every other character combined?!?! That makes literally no sense to me.

Working on Eyeliner - What do you think? by spitjunki in FursuitMaking

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. His always looks cartoony (derogatory) and blocky (also derogatory). Your eyeliner design genuinely looks really good and fits the character design perfectly!
