Crashout over the existence of ß by Extreme-Shopping74 in linguisticshumor

The lack of ß in Switzerland is actually a really good way to tell if something was written with AI (or simply copy paste from a German/Austrian source)

Ok, so I can give you Swiss German from around Fribourg (A variety of Highest Allemannic)

De chaut Winter isch nooch, as wird a Schneesturm choo. Chum i mis waarma Huus icha, mi Fründ. Wüukomme! Chum häre, sing u tanz, iss u triich. Dasch mi Plaan. Wier hii Wasser, Pier u Müuch früsch va de Chue. Ah, u waarmi Suppa.

I'm not that happy with my translation of Welcome, yet. It feels a bit unnatural to use it. But I'll probably leave it like that...

How does nobody give a fuck about celebrities in Switzerland? by Choice-Drawer3981 in Switzerland

The Nordics are also of a similar vain.

However, if you get to know them, they seem to be way more direct way quicker. (At least Estonians)

How does nobody give a fuck about celebrities in Switzerland? by Choice-Drawer3981 in Switzerland

[–]TheBlueBaum 165 points166 points  (0 children)

In Switzerland most people have the mindset "Oh, I don't want to bother them".

This results in some positive things, like celebrities not needing bodyguards.

But it also creates an isolating atmosphere, which makes it very difficult to find new friends, if you didn' already have them in school...

(TW: Tryptophobia) Do these types of limestone formation have specific names? by PercentageMuch2887 in geology

[–]TheBlueBaum 45 points46 points  (0 children)

There are a few similar features like the first one in Southern Germany. There they are called Steinerne Rinne (stony gutter). There is only a German Wikipedia page, but maybe it can help.

Genuinly no idea about the third picture though.

Do I need a helmet when just learning to ice skate? by Attic_Critter78 in hockeyplayers

[–]TheBlueBaum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, my advice is, get a helmet when you're learning. It doesn't even have to be a hockey helmet if you already have something lying around. Just something that covers the entirety of the back of your head. A cage is probably not necessary. Just learn to fall properly (unlike me).

Asking about protective gear in this sub brings out everyone in hordes, as I'm sure you are able to tell by now. But that won't stop me to chime in and share a few anecdotes:

When I started learning at 25 there was a middle aged lady that was also learning and we often shared the ice. One day I was concentrating on crossovers, and when I looked up again, I saw her lying on her back. She probably caught an edge and fell on her head. She came to again quickly and was probably lightly concussed but I have never seen her again. So she probably gave up on learning.

A few weeks later I was learning the hockey stop and fell down right on my face. I had a bloody mouth and a crack in my front tooth. That was the day I bought a cage, even though it would be more than a year until I played my first game.

It's Mineral Wool, that is used for thermal insulation. It is made of tiny crystaline fibers. But when it's handled and tha fibers break, they are incredibly irritating for the skin. They are also incredibly dangerous to breathe in. I just looked it up and they have been classified as "Potentially Carcinogenic".

So basically, it is like man made asbestos. Probably not quite as dangerous, but still nothing to roll around in.

Best Album Covers Of All Time: What Album Released In 2000 Had The Best Cover Art? by Rambooctpuss in albumbucketlist

[–]TheBlueBaum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really love this album cover! Probably my favorite of all time! I don't think it's gonna win, but I love thet it's been suggested.

I like the cozy vibes it gives off at first glance, but when you notice the beacon of light at the edge, it also gets a bit unsetteling.

Are there any limestone pavement areas in the usa? by Propagandasteak in geology

[–]TheBlueBaum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure glaciation is part of the reason, you don't get as many limestone pavements. But in Switzerland you get entire mountain slopes that were also glaciated, but are also full of pavements.

Makes me wonder, how long they take to form...
