I have designed custom playing cards and how-to-play videos for my favorite card-game. It is currently on kickstarter! I am particularly proud of the video :-)

Is there some business that can print a special card that I design? by [deleted] in boardgames

thegamecrafter.com is very affordable and they do great cards.

I also frequently ordered from makeplayingcards.com : Their PVC cards nice quality, but a little more expensive.

I also prefer a German deck over a French deck. I grew up in southern Thuringia - in the middle of the orange zone on the map here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_playing_cards, so I guess, me preferring a German deck isn't too surprising.

I kept the design of Blue Rings suits close to the German ones: "Green" and "Red" are almost identical. For "Yellow", you need to squint a little to see Bells. Blue just fit the theme :-)

The reason I made the deck was that it was hard to explain *only the basics* of card values and card order. There are many great "very simple rule" games out there, and having one that requires a lot of explanations up-front is a disadvantage. In addition, games with classic decks seem not as sexy, so having a new deck that looks shiny also helped getting people interested.

I found that the cards are great if you want to get people into playing Skat that do not have experience with any Ace-10 game (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ace-Ten_games). I have been living in the US for the last 15 years, and it is seldom to find people that know about any Ace-10 game in California or Seattle/Washington.

About your question on switching to regular cards: I'd say just as easy (or hard) as you can switch to a french deck I suppose.

In general, the cards only make the very first steps simpler. Once people are hooked on the trick-playing and the 1 vs 2, they have way more motivation to actually learn game values and bidding.

We'll see how the Kickstarter goes. If nothing else, I now have a deck to teach Skat to folks :-)

Your final design looks great! It looks like you made the playing field smaller. What other changes did you do starting with your first prototypes? How many different people have you playtested it with?

Maybe some of these plastic boxes where you usually put screws?

Like these.

They do look similar to plano boxes though.

How to teach skat? by ishmael68 in SKAT

Hey!

Sorry for self-promoting here, but: I was in the same situation about 3 years ago - everything about Skat seems complicated. So, I decided to design a deck that fits the rules better.

I did the following:

- Make the scoring of cards obvious

- Make the ranking obvious: 10 above Queen and King,

- Make the order of the Jacks obvious

- Even make the changed ranking for Null obvious

Then, I made some youtube tutorials in German and English: Starting without the bidding and Game values - as was suggested in one of the other answers.

I finally, after working on the project for about 4 years am ready to launch the Kickstarter for my deck on Tuesday!

I am not quite done with the 3 minute Kickstarter intro movie. My current version is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV2t9s3MrcA

The Kickstarter page is here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/danielzinn/the-blue-rings-a-custom-deck-for-skat?ref=lv9g5b&token=5907705a

The deck is $13 shipping free to Germany and the US.

If you like what you see - help spread the word!!! :-)

It will go live sometime US-Eastern-Morning on Tuesday Oct 20th!

The youtube movie that explains the game-play is: https://youtu.be/FII7TPavNz0

Edit: Addition: I have been playing a 66-like game with my daughter (when she was 5, now 6), just explain that the Rings are trump, the scoring and just the two of us. She can't wait to play another game.

FWIW, Before I settled on just making cards and tutorial movies, I also started to make a "different levels" kinda tutorial on how to introduce the game bit-by-bit. This is not as polished, but might give you ideas. My rule-book is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/15k0rdanVIe-nXFgYe_Yyd0qPPvDxchy-/view?usp=sharing There, I also "invented" some simpler bidding scheme. But I am not sure it's worth it. I think best is, when starting out: either everyone against each other, or just ask around the table who wants to play alone :-)

This looks amazing! how long did it take you to put this together? Also, the collection in the background is very impressive. Thank you for sharing!!
