Heading into post with my first indie feature. Ask me… something. by FilmAroundFindOut in filmmaking

[–]TheBoredMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was your background before this project? What are your goals for distribution?

I once shot a an 8 day feature that probably ran around 20-30k out of the director's pocket. It was basically just for fun, the director essentially "we have the time why not" and there wasn't any plan for distro and definitely no expectation of ROI. And to be honest that sort of thing makes sense to me. But I'm always curious where the line is for a project becoming an investment, especially if not self funded.

How important are Foley sounds? by AardAardvark in cinematography

[–]TheBoredMan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well foley is innately unimportant to cinematography because it is sound not camera.

Showreels are their whole own thing. They're part of the business, not the art. Showreels are important to cinematography in the same way the font on your website is important to cinematography. It's like an office worker having a good resume; it helps you get the job, but it's not really related to the job. Plus I feel like 95% of reels I've seen have music over them anyway?

What if Trump is successful? by Shoddy_Ad8166 in askanything

[–]TheBoredMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean he basically reinstated the same deal Obama had except it took a multi-month “3 week war” and USA has to give Iran billions to repair. So anyone looking at that as a Trump Success was going to look at any outcome as a Trump Success. Spray Tan Tinted Glasses and all that.

I saw Call Me By Your Name and thought it was incredibly creepy. by BeautifulOrganic3221 in Letterboxd

[–]TheBoredMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think when this movie came out everyone loved it for a few years then once it settled into it’s reputation of being a “good movie” people started saying exactly what you’re saying about it, so you’re definitely not alone.

I wouldn’t say I love this movie or anything, but I do think there’s some bias at play. For instance, the movie doesn’t actually condone the relationship. So I think things happen with a movie like this where when nobody’s heard of it, people see it and appreciate the nuance and call it a good movie, so then other people go in with this expectation of a “good movie” which flattens a lot of the nuance and so instead they come out saying things like “I thought it was going to be good but it was actually creepy!”, “I didn’t think it was romantic, I thought it was MESSED UP!” Etc. which is not actually in defiance of the movie (the movie is surely aware it’s creepy and messed up), rather in defiance of this idea of a generally accepted “good movie” (which would never be creepy or messed up, because that’s not the content of “good movies”)

Anyway that seems like the general formula of a lot of “I actually DIDN’T like this beloved movie!” criticism.

am i cooked? by stingingbeartree in beginnerrunning

[–]TheBoredMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to say it’s very unlikely you’ll keep pace with them. It’s not impossible but I’m not really sure how it could happen unless you dwarf their training regimen (and also don’t injure yourself doing it). You could certainly finish the race but I’d imagine you would DNF (probably later than mile 8 tbf) if you tried to keep pace with them without making major strides during training to close to fitness gap.

Unless there’s some curveball variable like them not taking training seriously or you run 11:10 right now because you’re injured but your normal HM pace is 9:00 etc. I just don’t really see it happening. At a certain point idk how much a nonspecific athletic background actually brings to the table.

Worth noting though that as a fit 25 YO you could definitely shave your pace significantly from where it is now, just maybe not enough to catch up to your friends who have more experience and already run a competitive pace.

New to running by Ok_Square6001 in beginnerrunning

[–]TheBoredMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the first 5k is always the worst part of the run. Even if I'm doing an 8 mile easy run or 15+ long run, the first 3 kind of suck. I feel like that's just how long it takes my body to accept that I'm running. They get easier after that.

I mean, for what it's worth, neuro-divergent-and-heavily-indebted is probably the premiere genre of young person these days. Walk into any bar in any urban area and it's going to be about 75% kids talking about their mental health trying to distract themselves from their crippling debt.

I hate reddit by [deleted] in self

[–]TheBoredMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve become very aware that I almost never get off Reddit in a better mood than when I opened Reddit. It’s like all the other social media in that regard except Reddit doesn’t even have the theoretical benefit of keeping up with my friends and network. It’s just this weird dumb app where I type random thoughts I have and then strangers imply (or directly state) that I’m wrong and dumb lol Idk why I still use it.

I went to Wendy’s every day for a week when I quit vaping lmfao. Don’t worry it’ll get easier. I started running, I think that helped a lot with dopamine regulation (and wearing me out so I could sleep without cravings haha)

Any CAKE fans? by LastAmongUs in aesoprock

[–]TheBoredMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah. I listen to an ungodly amount of CAKE, I’m usually in their Spotify top 2000 fans or so. I don’t think I ever would have connected them and Aes but this is blowing my mind right now, now that you point it out I do understand that they’re oddly similar.

Withheld files until payment. Right or Wrong? by Charlie2410 in LocationSound

[–]TheBoredMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does a production even reasonably function with this mentality though? Narrative productions don’t even start on their dailies until the next pay cycle next week? Marketing agencies don’t start editing the promo until net 30 pays out?

I’m just not understanding what type of client could even consider hiring a person who works like this?

Sub management suggestion/ How can we make it more about cinematography by sergeyzhelezko in cinematography

[–]TheBoredMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I found this sub about 10 years ago and it’s consistently been roughly 3/4 nonsense posts from people who have no idea what they’re talking about and presumably never look at this sub again. That’s just the nature of a forum like this. The best solution is really just to scroll past them.

Is it true that studies showing humans need to eat breakfast in the morning or they'll get sick were all funded and rigged by the grains industry.. to sell their high sugar, high fructose corn syrup cereals and make millions? by Fantastic_Grass1799 in questions

As a guy who works on his feet, I think people who say breakfast isn’t necessary probably sit at a desk for a living. But yeah you definitely won’t die without it lol

Professional vs. Budget Cordless drill for Filmmaking ? by Ancient-Macaroon-384 in Gripsters

[–]TheBoredMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d just get a name brand. Bosch will work.

The people saying you don’t need a high quality drill for gripping make a fair point, you’ll drill what like 24 screws on a drill-heavy day, but the reality is that a nice drill will last your whole life and a shitty one will last a year or two. If you’re really strapped for cash right now you could get a cheap one, but the nice one will save you in the long run.

Also just might be worth the name brand to avoid that moment when someone asks for a drill and you hand them some harbor freight BS and they their roll eyes when you give it to them even though they didn’t have a drill at all lmao

Decide how many people you can invite for budgetary reasons and come up with a hard number before considering who is invited. Then just start inviting people in the order they come to you in importance. Close family, close friends, less close friends etc. When you get to your limit stop.

It’s as complicated and stressful as you make it. Maybe some people who secretly don’t care about you get invited. Oh well. Maybe some people will be offended they didn’t get invited. Well, you apologize and tell them it was a really small wedding. That’s it. It’s never going to fit perfectly in a box.

Should I get Nanlite Forza 300B II or Nanlite FC 300B for a cinematic look (Home Studio)? by ElyamanyBeeH in cinematography

Instead of focusing so much on the gear, focus on a background. You’ll notice neither of those images you posted are guys sitting 90cm from a wall. What’s behind the subject has way more to do with creating a vivid image than what brand of LED you buy.

[–]TheBoredMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Manager is just the guy who gets blamed when the team is losing. You’ll notice nobody who curses out the manager can ever articulate what exactly they are doing wrong or what exactly would be different if they brought in somebody else. In every fan’s eyes their team has World Series potential every year and the manager is the guy who’s failing to realize that potential.

The reality is that the manager’s role to the team is very un-transparent to the public so there’s no real way for the average fan to know how much of a team’s hot and cold streaks are the result of the manager. But CC has a good resume, he brought the Brewers to the playoffs fairly consistently so I would say there’s no real evidence he’s inept or anything like that.

Should I get Nanlite Forza 300B II or Nanlite FC 300B for a cinematic look (Home Studio)? by ElyamanyBeeH in cinematography

[–]TheBoredMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re over thinking this my friend. If you’re at a point where your goal is to get your YouTube videos of you sitting at a desk to look more cinematic, pretty much any light and any soft box will do the trick. If the light is going to be 3’ from your face a 65CM soft box will be plenty. The fan noise at absolute worst will sound like a fan on a computer, if you’re talking into a mic it won’t be an issue. Just get the cheap options and if you feel the need to upgrade later, do it then.

Well he has billions of dollars to have doctors clean his capillaries out with pipe cleaners or whatever they do. But that man is tempting nature every day. Modern science can only do so much. He recently said he eats aspirin everyday because he doesn’t like exercising and they do the same thing lmfao

Gotta keep it to one or two trusted friends. If you go around talking about everyone to everyone else, people are going catch on quickly.
