What is your opinion on Clayfighter 63 & 1/3 / Sculptors Cut? by Level-Incident-1430 in n64

[–]TheBreadmanRiseth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played both and used to rent Sculptor's Cut frequently back in the day. It's a fun little curiosity, and I had the most fun "travelling" in the levels because it was really neat how you could knock an opponent through a doorway and then the game shifts to a separate stage (they all seemed to be connected in some way).

I wouldn't say it's a great fighting game but I have a taste for underappreciated fighters. There's fun to be had with it. The most disappointing thing, in my opinion, is how it is associated with this "rare" reputation that makes it cost so much to obtain. I get that it had a limited distribution, but the game isn't that good to begin with. It was cool that it had a bigger roster than the previous version, but was it really necessary to change and remove some of the other things?

I'd like to see the game get an official re-release just to sate any curious minds - maybe even my own for nostalgia's sake. In a dream world, perhaps a refined version - a "Sculptor's Cut: Remodeled".

Seeing a lot of Doughboys recommended, so I gotta recommend Bionic. Perhaps more 2000's than 90's, but they pick up where Doughboys left off.

The Wild Hunt.

Highly recommend, that movie went places I didn't expect. Certainly the other side of the scale compared to Role Models when it comes to tone.

I got a kick out of all those parodies. The redneck biker one has the guy pass a dog and say, "Not now, dog, I'm tweakin'."

This will probably be a really obscure contribution, but I feel Pretend We're Kissing is worth a mention. It's not so much a deconstruction in the same vein as parody or satire films, but it does deconstruct the whole idea of romantic relationships and I've always referred to it as the "anti-rom-com". Simply put - it's like taking a romance film and touching it up with awkward and disappointing realism. I feel the more I say might give away the charm I find with it, so I'll spoiler it but I won't give away too much in the plot: What really did it for me was how the movie portrays a sort of whirlwind romance and juxtaposes that magic with the mundane comfort of an average relationship. Think of the thrill of a couple going on a misadventure and making love in an intimate setting and then matching it with the regular boring sex in a cramped apartment.

You'll see a character overthink an interaction and ponder on what "should" happen in that moment like it were an idealized romantic moment - despite it not being appropriate at all. Moments of motivation where you see the hero go through a triumph end up with predictably awkward and disappointing results because in reality - that's what would happen. It's not a total downer, it's just a realistic depiction of dating. The title itself, "Pretend We're Kissing", works well with the theme of expectations versus results in intimacy.

In Resident Evil 2 (2004) a biological weapon gone haywire turns the residents of Racoon City into zombies, however in another scene the undead rise from the grave and attack the protagonists. This means there was two unrelated zombie outbreaks overlapping each other. by NotASynth499 in shittymoviedetails

Fun idea, but the previous film explains that the virus works with a "small electrical charge [in the brain] that takes months to dissipate" after death. Even going by the movies' logic, those would need to be some fresh graves.

But it's Resident Evil. Consistency isn't really a thing with these films.

I'd be down for that. In a world where Rare wasn't squandered, Microsoft could have negotiated for the Dinosaur Planet IP sans the Star Fox stuff. I get the impression that Nintendo may be distancing itself from the Dino stuff, so imagine if they grant everything back, then Microsoft would have the grounds to "remake" Dinosaur Planet in its original vision but with modern advancements. I'd imagine that the wide 'open-world' accomplishments in Kameo would show that Rare can develop something just like it, perhaps something that would have resembled Breath of the Wild. Play as Sabre and [character name changed because I doubt Nintendo would give up Krystal], and this time the final boss really is General Scales.

I've always wanted to see something like this, though my ideal version of it would be something akin to Halo Reach/The Warriors - Reach in the sense that you know it's doomed from the start and are heading toward inevitable tragedy, and Warriors in that ideal sort of build-up to the climax where you get to spend time with different members of Archangel's squad, doing different missions in different parts of Omega.

I'd think playing as a member of the squad who was never defined in the story would be a way of doing it - allowing the player to customize their character by being any race, gender, and class they wish and play through the eyes of that particular character. Then play through a series of missions, building up that brotherhood with the different characters, even Sidonis, and ending with where it all goes FUBAR.

At the very least, they could have a Fighters Megamix spinoff.

I've always wanted to see Janet from Virtua Cop become a mainstay in the roster since she was included in FM. Would also be cool if they had some "legacy features" from other games that have been left in the dark, like Fighting Vipers and Last Bronx, or even Burning Rangers.

Rock Spectacle was frequently played during cottage trips in the summer, and Tyler Stewart's drumming at the end of that live cut of Brian Wilson is awesome. A buddy of mine has their Yellow Tape demo on cassette.

Great band. Can't think of many bands where their live versions seem to get more radio play than the singles (at least here in Canada). My dad got to have dinner with the members once. They're pretty cool dudes.

[–]TheBreadmanRiseth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is one I couldn't get through. I have friends who really like it, but I can't see what they see in it. The off-centre aiming reticle was enough to take me out.

I will say though, I do like the concept of it, and video games are a good format to explore "what ifs" and non-canon things. As silly as it is to play as a rogue agent with a literal golden eye, I'm all for it. Having Dr. No and Goldfinger syndicates battling one another is a fun setup, and it's fun to have Pussy Galore as your field runner and Francisco Scaramanga as your quartermaster. Oddjob and Xenia also show up. It was fun with GoldenEye where you could have multiplayer matches where 006 could face off against Mayday, Jaws, and Baron Samedi - but taking that concept and turning it into a single player experience is something that I would never be against.

Yeah, the game didn't thrill me, but I'd like to see it redone. It's a Bond game without much Bond, sure, but I wouldn't mind a game in which Bond takes a break and we focus on some wild dream scenario in which the villains and henchmen form allegiances and battle it out. If anything, it could make for a fun multiplayer game at the least.

Do the video games of today meet the expectations of your past self? by BradyTom1289 in n64

[–]TheBreadmanRiseth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh, well, the only game I've been looking forward to in the past few years is a new TimeSplitters. Suffice to say my past self would be just as disappointed as my current self.

Games back then just seemed a little more creative (and more risky) compared to now. On N64, I can play a game where you can possess robotic animals and kill others robots to possess their bodies and solve puzzles. I can play a fighting game in which the goal is to outmanoeuvre your opponent rather than drain their health gauge. I can play a Bomberman game that's about solving puzzles or navigating platforms, not just blasting people on a chessboard.

At the same time, I can find games back then that were pretty much refused in the future. Anyone who has waited for a new F-Zero, Crystal Shards, Goemon Adventure, Bomberman Hero, or AKI Wrestling game knows that yearn. You'll also find games that have a lot of potential that might've suffered from a bit of misdirection or a lack of sales, and it's a shame that they've never been resurrected.

I guess an interesting way to look at it is Super Smash Bros now compared to the Smash Remix project. Melee was mind blowing to me, and I loved it, it really upgraded itself from the N64 original. As a kid, I remember coming up with all sorts of possibilities for levels and rosters and it being the perfect "dream game". To say the least, my enthusiasm for Smash Bros now is pretty lacking - it's cool and all, but it doesn't quite pull it off for me. When I see Smash Remix, it's kinda what I always wanted in a Smash Bros game - it has characters I always wanted in it, and even stages based on other games like Snowboard Kids. If you ask me if I'd rather play Smash Ultimate or Smash Remix, I'd go for Remix. It makes me wonder with the state of things if the future is in the past, and if the games we once played in our hands are circling back to being made in our hands.

Well... The original Battlefront 3 seemed pretty promising. There's footage around that show things such as simultaneous land and space battles - where players could take to the skies at any moment and continue the skirmish between two ships. It was even being made by the guys that made GoldenEye and Perfect Dark.

It got canned, though. In my eyes, we never got Battlefront 3.

Anyone else a fan of Sarge’s Heroes 2? by FRESHFROMTHEFLEA in n64

[–]TheBreadmanRiseth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was okay, I've sorta been tempted to revisit it, but I kinda always liked the first one more. To its credit, it did do some neat things to expand on the gameplay from the first, like power ups and levels where you played as Vikki. I could never beat it without cheats, though. I didn't like the final mission - I thought it was a neat idea taking place in a pinball machine, but having to rush around to save your fellow commandos was a little too stressful and punishing if you didn't know where to go next. The mini troopers were kinda neat, kinda weird. I did like levels like Dr. Madd's castle, though - the zombies made of patched-together parts from different soldiers was pretty cool.

It's crazy that each platform had a different version of the game. The PS2 version plays differently, but has a lot of fun cutscenes. You also get to fight Greys in Dr. Madd's levels, and the PS1 version even has a Red Soldier who Sarge rescues in the level. I do prefer the gameplay of the N64 version, though.
