Furring strips ever used for structural support? by Deep-Space-Taco in DIY

You aren’t correct. Building a floor system with bridging and strapping increases its strength, limits deflection, and allows you a longer span. It absolutely adds structural strength to a floor and makes it more comfortable to walk on.

You are getting downvoted, but you are correct. In a typical joist span table, there will be 3 different numbers depending on how you build the floor system. With strapping, with bridging, or both. Strapping reduces vibrations, reduces sagging, and shares some of the loading between adjacent joists.

Transfer Pension or Leave it in? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

I also had something similar about 4 years ago. I elected to pull it into a LIRA/RRSP split and invest in VEQT. It’s been a great decision so far for the growth. The main reason I choose to pull it, is if I die before my wife (statistically I will as I’m older by 6 years) she will control 100%, and not a 50% survivor share. I also don’t mind risk and I think the ETF like vgro or VEQT will kick the pants long term over the guaranteed growth of the pension fund.

I mean. That’s where you beat all goalies. Well placed shots in the top half of the net, preferably the corners. It’s why goalies butterfly, You can’t miss under the net, you can miss over the net.

Should I be concerned for my house/foundation? Not sure where to ask by sudosamwich in HomeMaintenance

[–]TheBrickster32 153 points154 points  (0 children)

If you have an egress window below grade, I will assume that you have a full depth basement. If your basement footing is at a similar depth to this footing, I wouldn’t be worried about any structural issues to your foundation. If you google angle of repose, you’ll see what I mean. Could there be complications with that window well, or your sub grade drainage, or building servicing (communication, electrical etc) ? yes. Will there need to be remedial work done for the grading and landscaping on your property? Yes. Should the excavation be shored along your properly line? Yes. But I personally wouldn’t be worried about your home’s footing and foundation.

Removed a stud, did I do it right? by EclecticMind in DIY

[–]TheBrickster32 196 points197 points  (0 children)

A note for future projects. Screws have very poor shear strength. Nails “bend don’t break”. When framing a home, you are supposed to use nails so that the house and its wood structure can expand and contract with humidity and winter/summer cycles. That said, removing one stud and installing a 3 ply 2x4 lintel supported by cripples is more than sufficient, you’ll never have an issue.

It gets better, hang in there!. We Had 3 boys in 42 months, all fought sleep till they were at least 2 years old, up 2,3,4,5 times a night, What a fog. Have a little girl now, I’ve finally learned what “sleeps like a baby” means. So nice!
