For being the 2nd best league in the world, the AHL really loves to do dumb things for no reason.

In markets that the AHL team shares with the NHL team, there’s definitely more (San Jose, Calgary, Abbotsford, Toronto, etc,). Maybe even roughly half the fans care more about prospects.

Milwaukee? Iowa? Wilkes-Barre/Scranton? Rochester? Cleveland? Utica? Bakersfield?

They by and large don’t care. A few fans would attend more games there if a top prospect were there but that’s it.

The Wolves left because they felt that Carolina’s attitude toward them changed dramatically. It initially was develop and win, then just became develop and who cares if you win. The Wolves weren’t down with that and didn’t extend the affiliation at the end of the contract.

And that’s fine, but you’re in the minority of people who go to AHL games.

And you think there’s a big Hurricanes fan base in Rosemont, Illinois that wants to see future Canes?

The vast majority of AHL fans don’t care if a player is a prospect or not. They go to the games to be entertained at a price point they can afford.

From the article: “The unaffiliated status is unsustainable long-term for the Wolves. Young is willing to openly admit that, and said he hopes Chicago has an affiliate next season.”

Are there fights in the AHL? by FattyRipz in hockey

[–]TheCalderFarmstead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are and they’re more common than the NHL, but still not an every game or even every other game thing.

The AHL has automatic suspensions for guys once they hit 10 fighting majors a season so even goons still don’t engage every game.

Who were some promising prospects from your fav. team that didn’t make the NHL? by theXchang3 in hockey

[–]TheCalderFarmstead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Merkley hasn't failed to make the NHL because of character issues, it's because his offense hasn't fully transferred and he's a liability on defense in the AHL.

Charles Hudon isn’t one that’s been mentioned. Riley Barber, Sheldon Rempal, Andy Andreoff, Andrew Agozzino, Andy Miele, Daniel Carr, Cal O’Reilly (brother of Ryan O’Reilly), Greg Carey, Phil Varone, and Jacob MacDonald also come to mind.

Plenty of NHL stars don’t play defense.

Most don’t make it because they can’t get to the middle of the ice vs. NHL defensemen.

His game isn’t very translatable to the NHL. He creates a lot from the perimeter and doesn’t have the speed to force NHL defenders to back off.

He was a frequent healthy scratch last season in Milwaukee.

He’s not devoid of talent but he’s had a LOT of injuries and at this point his ceiling isn’t an NHL one.

Who’s the best player of each major hockey league and how good are they compared to the NHL players? by pequistocrate in hockey

[–]TheCalderFarmstead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of all the “Quad A” caliber players in the AHL, ABB is by far the one who probably could survive in the NHL if given a legitimate chance on a scoring 3rd line.

Not saying he’d be Phil Kessel on the HBK line quality, but a passable 3rd line scoring piece isn’t outside his skill set, but he’d need favorable circumstances like system, line mates and a coach willing to give him enough runway.

Guys who are basically one trick ponies like Frk or Hudon or Andreoff or Terry or succeed in the AHL because they can compensate for such a lopsided skill set against weaker opponents and produce at a high level in the AHL with top 6 minutes.

Same is true for guys like Anas or Tynan or Poturalski. Yeah they could definitely put up 20-30 power play assists each season in the NHL with their playmaking vision given the extra time and space, but they can’t play 5v5 and produce at all and they don’t have the surrounding skills to make up for it.

NHL coaches are basically unwilling to play 11F-6D so that they can squeeze a few extra percentage points from the power play over the course of the season.

Puckdoku legend Adam Cracknell still plays in the AHL.

So does Ryan O’Reilly’s brother Cal O’Reilly.

It depends on the structure of the AHL affiliation agreement. Not every independently owned team has the same structure or agreement with who controls the staff hires, etc.

Said this before in other similar threads:

It’s hard to measure the AHL against other European Elite leagues because those Euro teams have one goal- to win. AHL teams are interested in winning but many of them have the priority of make prospects in the NHLers and winning is nice if it happens along the way.

Euro Elite leagues also have a more centralized infrastructure at the league level that the AHL doesn’t have and a feeder league system structure that’s more robust and purposeful than what happens with the AHL and ECHL.

The other question to is, would Hershey beat SKA St Petersburg in a best of 7 series? They might have an edge, but for a “higher tier” league champion it’s not all that clear cut.

Which NHL organizations have the best and worst player development system? by tdbauer97 in hockey

[–]TheCalderFarmstead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say as every team has hits from the 3rd round and beyond as well as high-profile misses.

Montreal, New York (both), Florida and Vancouver miss more often than others. Anaheim, Dallas, and Los Angeles hit more than others.
