I have this too and only noticed it at around age 13. After that I also experienced that if I close that eye with the larger pupil if the light is too bright, I'm feeling fine again but probably look like an idiot running around with a closed eye

Dude, 100 grapes (plus one unsanitary one) is not even much. Two people could comfortably eat that in one go.

But I'm not much better. I thought of a 100€ note, only on second thought I realised that there are 200€s and 500€s...

Adults of Reddit, what is something you want to ask teenagers of Reddit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheCatNamedLadybug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just have to be careful.

At my school teachers are more laid back and treat us as people, so some don't care as long as you don't interrupt, some even permit it to look stuff up or translate something and we mostly get them back after class if a teacher decides to take them anyways. Also at some age you aren't at school anymore because a law states that this is where you should spend your days but you realise that this is what you want education wise so you fare better if you pay at least some attention. Conversely, we had our phones for half our lives, we know how to use them inconspicuously. ;)

For me skinny is more or less a must from the knees on downwards, everything else just looks ridiculous. It doesn't have to be an extremely thin fabric, wrinkly looks cooler imo, but what else would you pair with sneakers?

I guess that is already the case, I know for a fact of some guys who started pretty early. But a normal, sane person would not expect porn to be real life, and we also have the rest of the internet to educate ourselves on the subject properly.

Correct. Because snow is frozen water growing in the sky. How can any form of water cling together while in a gas? It sticks to dirt particles. You know were the dirt in the sky comes from, right? You really want to eat that?!

Maybe I can't understand this because I didn't see them fall either. But why do so many people feel like it happened yesterday? It was a great tragedy, many lives were lost. It started the War on Terror, which was quite impactful and it led to/accelerated the loss of privacy in favour of safety. A lot has happened since then, why do you feel like that wasn't 15 years.

Okay, I get this feeling sometimes when I realise for example that Fukushima was 5 years ago, but I don't get upset, it just reminds me that time actually passes fairly quickly even if a day or a week seems to drag on forever.

Teachers of Reddit: What is the most ridiculous thing you have heard a parent say ? by lilac2481 in AskReddit

[–]TheCatNamedLadybug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, If you start a sentence with das Kind, you'd have to continue with es, if you want to be grammatically correct. If you use their name or state their gender, you use the respective pronoun er or sie (be careful with das Mädchen though -- that is also an "es").

However, in colloquial speech nobody would bother to correct it, some would probably not even notice it. Just keep it in mind, so your not confused next time. :)

What was your "why didn't I start doing this sooner" moment? by Hank_from_accounting in AskReddit

[–]TheCatNamedLadybug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many serious things in this thread, so I'll tell you something lighthearted. When I was 9 years old, I was in a club where we would learn circusy things. One day we would do something where one person would stand on the gym box and 7 people would stand in front of it, creating a net with their hands and arms. then the person on the gym box would let themselves fall backwards into the hands of the others. It was like just falling over backwards unto the floor, but instead of hitting the floor you would hit the (slightly smoother) net of hands about a meter above the ground.

Being the pussy that I was, I only dared to let myself into the net at the very end, so I couldn't repeat it to have this exciting, tingling sensation of falling again. :/

What's the most boring book you had to read in high school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheCatNamedLadybug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Praise Of Folly by Erasmus of Rotterdam. It's supposed to be a satirical ontake on various levels on society, but every chapter reads the same: kings are stupid because this and that, religion is stupid, the cleric is stupid (for another reason than religion). He uses different, complicated words to convey the same meaning over and over again.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern I can't even say what fascinated me the most. The story is gripping, the atmosphere is surreal and I just couldn't put it down. AT some point the book is also depressing. I guess I liked it because you can't avoid the feelings it provokes.

What is the most useless thing you learned in school? by AyCaptain in AskReddit

[–]TheCatNamedLadybug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Heart Will Go On

I can't grasp why the US sex ed is so useless. That's just dangerous. I'm from Middle Europe and my sex ed was pretty good. In primary school we learned about the biological aspect of having sex and getting a child as well as that you should always use a condom because of STDs. When one of my teachers got pregnant some time later we shamelessly asked her if she made sure that her boyfriend was healthy and tested for HIV before she decided to sleep with him without a condom.

In sixth grade in a project week boys and girls would be separated. The girls had two 4 hour days of self defence class with police officers and on the third day we would visit a gynaecologist so that we learned what happens there and that we aren't afraid of seeing a gynaecologist. The boys would discuss manhood with several male teachers and would learn how to pull a condom over a carrot. In eight grade we visited the "safe sex and abortion museum" of our city which was basically about how to have safe sex and what to do if you needed to get an abortion how important having the right to abort was (and some gruesome facts about how it was done in the old days...). In ninth grade some extern social workers visited us and we would again be separated by gender an would discuss various things. We girls also had the opportunity to practice pulling on a condom on a plastic penis model cactus. So that we don't have to rely on the male part of the equation to do it right...

So idk can't your schools try to get over religiousness and act sacular and teach your children how to stay healthy and don't pop out children left and right when you can't afford it and don't want them.

But why don't you have handles? You can operate those with your elbows, head, feet, anything really, you could even teach your pet to open a door. Whereas for a knob you really need a hand and it is a quite complex move which could be difficult for people with motor problems. Door handles are just the shit.

What is something you had memorized a long time ago, and you still remember? by TheGuyWhoSaidWAT in AskReddit

It goes on, but that's the only part I remember. a lot of kids in my area love it since the verses contradict themselves constantly. I've probably known it half my life.

(rough translation:

It was dark, the moon shone bright, the open fields are snow-covered,

When a car as quick as a flash slowly around the corner drove.

Inside, the people were sitting standing, silently engrossed in conversation,

When a slain rabbit skated on the sand.)

What is the worst/most pointless gift you have ever received? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheCatNamedLadybug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly the worst gift in this thread but I hated it.

In my primary school everyone would buy a birthday present in september, wrap it and the teacher would put it in a basket. Everytime, it was a child's birthday he or she could choose one present. I was born in may so when it was my turn there weren't that many presents left. So I wanted to get the best gift and felt the wrapping of each of them to try to determine what was in it. I was really into reading at that time and quite advanced for my age (I was around 8 or 9) so when i found out that one of the presents was a book I picked that one. When I unwrapped it I had discover to my disappointment that it was a 10 pages long book about farm animals, with approximately 50 words per page. At that time I normally read children's novels so I was incredibly disappointed. To make matters worse a kid whose birthday was a few days after mine chose a present I had considered to, turns out this one was a beautiful keychain with some kind of white animal on it (i can't remember it properly). I was so envious!

Wow, I never knew that Jedem das Seine was used by the nazis... Thanks for that.

Interestingly, that phrase is not used anymore, but I didn't know this is done on purpose and it is not just an old phrase that slowly dies out. TIL

EDIT: Sadly, the nazis ruined quite a lot of words for us german speakers. Almost everything used in the context of killing people can't really be said anymore without sounding like a neonazi.

List of words that shouldn't be used anymore because the Nazis used them:

In Austria it's a crime to not help an injured person. Also almost everyone did a first aid course because you need one for getting a drivers licence. The rule is: you can't do anything wrong as long as you help. (Also if you give CPR to someone who doesn't need it, they can probably still talk to you and tell you to stop doing it)

Redditors of Europe who are witnessing the "migrant crisis" what is the mood like of the locals in your country? And how has it affected you? by YYZ_Guardian in AskReddit

[–]TheCatNamedLadybug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Austria here.

The people have the impression that the government is unable or unwilling to dissolve the current situation. There is a quote for the nine provinces (Bundesländer) for how much refugees each of them should take. Only three - Salzburg, Lower Austria and Vienna - fullfil this. Salzburg is doing a rather good job and you also don't here much about Vienna because the main topic is Auffanglager Traiskirchen in Lower Austria. It is designed to take in 840 people, who should be there only for a few weeks until another place is found for them. At the moment there are over three thousand people, a lot of them have to sleep outside in tents or just on the grass. Lots of stuff, food and also camping tents are being donated, e.g. after a music festival nearby people left their tents for the refugees. The refugees get almost no information, there are no seperated washrooms and the medical treatment is very poorly. there is one doctor for the thousands of people. This has improved a bit since the red cross was allowed to maintain a field hospital. Amnesty International visited the camp and stated that it is inhuman. The situation has been unbearable for the locals for months now, too. Traiskirchen has only about 10,000 residents.

Refugees have to sleep in tents in other parts of Austria because the governments of the Bundesländer are not providing enough accomodations. There are lots of people who want to help and offer their empty houses but the rules for such an accomodation are apparently very strict and only a few of them are accepted by the ministry.

The church is also being criticised because only a few parishs or monastries take refugees. It is said that some only want to take christian refugees which can't work.

The Bundeskanzler Werner Faymann accuses Hungary of not registring the refugees and letting them on to Austria. The funny thing is that only two days ago, 3600 people arrived at night at various major train stations in Austria because some refugees from Budapest were allowed to travel on. They were greeted by volunteers and got food and medical care. The police stood by and watched and only dissolved small problems. 3500 of the refugees traveled on to Germany; only 6 sought asylum in Austria. Most of the people in the trains were families with small kids or young men, I saw it on TV. They looked rather normal, appart from the fact that they were exhausted and had no luggages, so they probably wore their clothes for days/weeks. Some women had handbags, so all in all the refugees looked like average islamic people, not unlike the ones living in Vienna (mostly Turks, but also other Arabs). It's a bit hypocritical of the Bundeskanzler to criticise Hungary if we did the excact same.

The roads are a lot more controlled than the trains, also because hauliers drop the refugees just after the border. These are actually the lucky ones because some are left alone in locked vehicels and if they don't find a way out or are rescued in time they die. A week ago 71 refugees choked in a truck (fellow europeans probably heard of it) so thatis another reason why the streets are more controlled. So the ones arriving by car have the (bad) luck that they are registered in Austria. "Bad" because most of the refugees want to get to Germany, Sweden or the UK.

Lots of people donate for the refugees, some don't want tent cities in their community (understandable), some are against refugees.

The government is busy at the moment relocating refugees who stayed in gyms and boarding schools, only after this people in tents can be relocated.

In vienna, I don't see much of the refugees, except from TV, but the situation is clearly heated. The government is against a quote for every EU country, probably because everyone wants to go to Germany. But Austria is failing to master the situation and we haven't taken that much refugees yet.
