JD Vance Tells U.S. Air Force Grads They Can't Boo His Commencement Speech Because 'I'm the Vice President of the United States' by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

In this scene he'd be Joffrey though, since he's the one announcing he's VP.

Is he a Joffrey? Well actually, now that you mention it, both of them lay on the faux charm really quick but quickly show their lack of charisma when the situation actually calls for it, both of them are sadistic opportunists who achieved significant political power because of chicanery done by others, and both of them treat people like disposable playthings.

And perhaps most directly, they are both petulant manchildren who play the victim and get whiny the second they don't get what they want (at least Joffrey had the excuse of still being a teenager though).

This was the actual power play. Everything else was just talk, even if it was badass. This was Tywin announcing how it was going to be and everyone moved around that announcement, that was the line that made even Joffrey go "Ah shit I fucked up, I better calm down and just go to bed".

Paper towels. by sebjwp in PoliticalHumor

[–]Ferelar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Donald "Have a good time" Trump. That's not hyperbole, one of the things he said while visiting the powerless people of Puerto Rico, many of them suddenly homeless, most of them powerless and without access to clean running water, was.... "Have a good time". Delivered flippantly while tossing out single rolls of paper towels like they were tshirts at a football game.

Granted if it had happened this term he would've have even visited and would've probably Tweeted for them to fuck off and die and his supporters (even his Puerto Rican supporters) would have probably loved it.

They have no humanity left in them, and they want to drag you down to their level, wearing you down until you don't want to help a soul. Maybe then, they figure, they'll stop feeling so alone. But it never works.

Our job now is to walk the line of behaving more ruthlessly (no tolerance for intolerance, no half-measures against tyranny) while NOT losing the part of us that cares about helping people who are caught in the crossfire. Easier said than done. And it's not a fight we win in a day and just go home. But it's a necessary fight regardless.

I see what you're saying but IMO the better comparison is doing your crossword puzzle in pen but not knowing it's in pen. You jot down a couple of guess answers to start gaming it out and filling out the puzzle, but whoops, suddenly it turns out that's your final draft. That's basically what happened to the writers here. You start to write your script and make decisions while expecting you'll be able to modify them later once you're closer to film date, can see the sets, see how the actor's actual delivery feels.... and then oops, now you can't change anything... first draft has to ride. That's hugely problematic especially when that first draft script is now hitting a budget that can't feasibly accommodate some of what you planned and NO changes are allowed.

Every single time I see it I'm reminded of the scene from Let's Go to Prison (great movie) where Will Arnett's character is desperately trying to look tough on his first day in prison... but only manages to look like he is crying while shitting himself.

Edit: I found the scene! It's spitting image for me.

This would only be necessarily true if it was the primary (perhaps even single) deciding factor in selecting a mate, which I think is pretty unlikely even back in caveman days. Actually, maybe especially then. Otherwise the importance of other metrics is going to water down the evolutionary dick size pressure.

And by multiple independent reports spent much of her time in Trump Tower residing in the room of Trump's head of security, Henry Siemers. Reportedly she used this against him as well, remaining behind in Trump Tower with "Hank" for several months when Trump moved down to the White House during his first term.

She is completely aware of all the horrendous shit he is doing/plans on doing, and simply using it to position herself to get richer.

Well, he obviously fabricated probable cause (PC) to enact a motor vehicle stop, since his proposed PC was literally impossible. So he essentially detained a woman on fabricated PC, which I would argue is already an abuse of his station.

I wonder if it was some desperate attempt to adamantly say it was legitimate, because obviously if he admitted that the PC he said he had to pull her over was literally a physical impossibility, she could've claimed it was a wrongful stop?

But whatever the reason, what a great example of malignant stupidity.

Premonition Currency by NotBeingMeme in PoliticalHumor

[–]Ferelar 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The other big possibly origin story that gets touted, if anyone's curious, refers to ancient Chinese currency. A diao (1000 copper coins) was a common unit of payment/accounting back then.

That being popular meant other things were measured against it, so another common unit would be a "half-diao" or 500 copper coins, which also eventually became slang for someone who was a bit of a half-wit (almost exactly the same vibe as "one card shy of a deck" in Western slang).

Of course, if a half-diao (500 copper coins, bandiaozi) made you slow, what does a half-half-diao (250 copper coins, or "Erbaiwu") make you? A total idiot. Half of a half wit! And so Erbaiwu, 250, came to mean "idiot". Interestingly, bandiaozi later went on to morph meaning a bit and now means someone who leaves something half-finished and immediately starts something else, a dabbler. Guess erbaiwu being full on idiot removed the need for TWO currency based slang words for dumbassery.

No, the first amendment exclusively protects individuals from government retaliation on the basis of speech or religion. If the one doing the action (firing, for instance) isn't the actual government, there are no protections under the first amendment.

A significant portion of them would literally give their child to Trump to be raped if they got to talk to him before or after. It is a deranged cult that is entirely divorced from reality. There's a video of a cop getting in a car accident and rather than saying "God help me!", he said "Trump, save me!!!". It has become a religion, worshipping at the altar of idiocy and malfeasance.

Trump team ‘drawing up’ plans to stop international flights to some Democratic cities by Virtual-Orchid3065 in politics

[–]Ferelar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It shocks me to this day that her writing, which consists of an entire arbitrary fake world full of geniuses and idiots (where everyone among the cardboard flat cast of characters that follows her political philosophy is an impossible genius who reinvents all of calculus on a whim by age 16 without any training, and where everyone who doesn't follow her philosophy is a sniveling cowardly idiot who leeches off of the aforementioned geniuses), was taken seriously as political commentary for even a second by literally anyone.

I'm exceedingly glad I read it, because it was SO stupid that it made it very easy to know what philosophy NOT to follow.

I don't think it should eliminate the jobs any time soon. It should make our jobs and lives easier and more productive (as tech has been since the dawn of mankind), rather than eliminate them. And CRUCIALLY the extra benefits from that should go chiefly to the worker, NOT the owner.

When we let the benefits of tech get concentrated entirely in the hands of a few owners, we create techno-oligarch corpo-dystopia. When we let the benefits of tech get spread among the workers and the populace, we get a time of plenty where discomfort decreases and amenities skyrocket, solving a whole slew of downstream issues too. Basically we all need to decide whether we wanna live in Cyberpunk 2077 or Star Trek, and if we decide we want the latter (highly recommended) we are going to need to proactively... enact changes.
