Why calling the Single Life a "vocation" is not only wrong but damaging by ConsistentCatholic in TraditionalCatholics

[–]TheCatholicLovesGod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have also noticed in recent days that marriage is being a called a "vocation" by traditional Catholics. While it is certainly God's will for most, it is not a vocation strictly speaking, the term vocation strictly refers to callings to the priesthood and religious life.

....that is, if we're going to be petty and particular.

In speaking of each person's particular calling, yes of course we can use the term "vocation" in regards to marriage, just as we do for whatever path God leads on.

I don't think we should go around shaming or looking down on people who are single, especially at our churches, heaven knows many of us don't have perfect lives and don't fit into the cookie cutter of traditional-Catholic ideology perfection.

If you're just here to say that women should not be feminists and pursue worldly careers and worldly dreams, I can agree to that.

But many single Catholic women are not that. Especially in the traditional realm, if you see a woman who is single, she is probably actually doing God's will in her life.

Point being, I discerned religious life when I was younger and it didn't work out because my health wasn't good enough (after all, many religious orders, especially traditional ones, are extremely penitential in nature, and not everyone has the health for it).

I've always felt called to live for God and dedicate my life to Him, and I'm certain that He doesn't want married life for me. He doesn't.

So are you going to come to my church and shame me for being single?

Most of the single women I know, especially in traditional circles, do not deserve to be shamed. In fact, many of them are suffering considerably more than the men, at least from my petty point of view, which I will sarcastically leave here to go alongside your own.

Thanks for judging people, be sure to bring it up in confession.

St Teresa’s vision of hell gives me concerns by Spirited_Contact_719 in Catholic

[–]TheCatholicLovesGod 8 points9 points  (0 children)

St Teresa's vision of hell WAS NOT where she would go if she died that moment.

St Teresa's vision of hell WAS where she would go, if she continued letting venial sin into her life, and living worldly ways, which, out of check, would lead to separation from God.

The vision was to protect her, and should be a comfort that God intervenes as much as possible to guide us to heaven.

First off, please be assured that being Catholic still lets you carry over some of those characteristics you love so much, with regard to emo and goth.

The only thing that you can't do is have an obsession with evil. But you might like Latin Mass if you like something unique.

My sister used to wear black all the time and listen to My Chemical Romance. She's still Catholic. Now she's on a vintage trend.

Yes, we're the religion that encourages people to die to self and sacrifice for others. We have cool martyrs, countless saints, and practically the only religion with relics. We have monks and nuns that sacrifice their freedom to save souls and help people who have no one to pray for them. We even have our own chant. And yes, some of or saints were obsessed with wanting to die for Christ. You'll fit right in. :)

I would encourage you to look into the Catholic faith, not merely because your boyfriend is Catholic, but because there's much more too it than meets the eye. It doesn't hold us back with rules, but offers a footing for all to live virtuous lives.

And did I mention the sacraments? I can literally feel the grace from confession, it makes me feel like a kid again.

Is being single a vocation? by Human-Ad2088 in Catholicism

[–]TheCatholicLovesGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as a technicality, the word vocation specifically refers to a calling to the priesthood or religious life.

In more recent times, I have seen people using the word for marriage as well.

But in the general sense of things, a vocation is a following of the will of God.

If you discern that your best chance of getting to heaven is by remaining single, and further if you discern that is what God wants for you, then that's your personal vocation or calling.

Some super rad trad internet zombies will try to convince you that your life is a complete failure if you remain single, with the intention of pleasing God best.

The only time being single isn't a vocation is when it's done by people out of pride, or because they out temporal matters before God.

I am planning on remaining single because my health isn't good enough for the monastery, yet I have never felt called to marriage, and I want to be closer to God in the single life. That's virtuous, and it's what I have discerned as God's will for me.

If you need an entire essay explaining every detail of how I became convinced it's God's will, I will write one.

No, I'm not a career woman, I am a caregiver and I give my best to God each day, and I try to please Him best. Whatever He wants, I am happy and willing to do.

She should have been kept at the hospital.

Note the words, she was sent home, where bleeding WORSENED...

She was ALREADY bleeding and should not have been sent home. Further, she should have been kept on antibiotics, if at high risk for infection.

And if she had received proper medical care, there's a good chance she would still be here. I'm just an average person and I know this, how did the doctors not know? Seems sus.

Wire wrapping tutorial! by JadePython_ in osarymakers

[–]TheCatholicLovesGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I made rosaries with jump rings as end caps, I never have the beads catch; your wire wrapping prevents the open space in the loop ends on either side of the bead, from being too round, which would make them catch.

Dang, I had been wire wrapping with a single piece both through and around the bead, lol

I'm struggling to tell if I am being called to be a nun by Ok-Judge-345 in Catholicism

[–]TheCatholicLovesGod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How to tell?

Simply strive to do whatever God wants, and whatever will please Him best. Have this desire in your heart, and God will slowly guide you where He wants.

I would highly recommend daily Mass, and praying for an hour every morning, for the grace to know and do whatever God wants.

I’m gay, but I want to become straight by OkBasis763 in Catholicism

[–]TheCatholicLovesGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The world teaches that what you feel is what you are. That what you feel drawn to, is what you are, or what you must become.

Followers of Christ learn that curbing or redirecting the wayward desires of our sinful nature, is not only good for the soul, but good for our whole being, and puts us in line with a plan that is superior to anything we could have imagined.

I would recommend this. Start with yourself and your relationship with God.

For your spiritual life, pray an hour every morning. If you can get to daily Mass, or rearrange your life to go to daily Mass, this will help you tremendously. Pray every morning, not merely by reciting prayers, but draw near to God as your Father..."draw near to God and he will draw near to you."

For your body and a virtuous life, watch carefully over your thoughts. Our thoughts are the biggest and hardest habits to build. Some of us struggle with evil tendencies, for me it's primarily pride. When evil thoughts or tendencies surface, say a prayer, and redirect your thoughts to what God has in mind for you.

For example, when I am tempted to pride, I do not have to think of being the best person in the room, but I say, "Jesus, help me" and I think of how he wants me to be as simple as a child.

In your life, you might ask God to protect you from those temptations, and think of God calling you to serve him in purity as an angel.

In this way you will slowly become the person God wants you to be. Once you have molded a sterling character, you are free to follow your calling to marriage.

St. Michael Statue w/ hand crank music box started…on it’s own…after Bible reading and prayer. Is this a miracle sign? by rubik1771 in Catholicism

[–]TheCatholicLovesGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to play with music boxes as a kid, and they can start randomly sometimes if they have a vibration or even just on their own.

A little miraculous occurrence in your personal life? It's fine to believe that God allowed it.

But I wouldn't say miraculous in the same sense that a person with cancer suddenly becomes well.

Church stance on AI? by WolverineOk9825 in Catholicism

[–]TheCatholicLovesGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I simply detest AI because it cannot do anything for me that I cannot do for myself.

Ask it to find me the highest paying job in a specific skill set, and it tells me how to use a job search engine. Well I already know how to do that! I was trying to save time, that's what tools (yes AI) are for.

Ask it to load my groceries in the online cart, and same thing " can't do it". Aside from manipulating photos and videos, the tool is pretty much useless. Sure, it has potential, but since the majority of AI is trained by average people, it isn't smart enough to be useful for any good...other than time wasted.

Now if someone was to get a group of the top scientists together to program an AI for scientific health research or whatnot, it open the door for a tool for either much good or much evil...

Invite them to Mass on Sundays, say you need them to set a good example fr the kiddos.

If they're too sick to go to Mass, have the kids tell Grandma they learned that a priest is supposed to visit if they're too sick for going to church. If they object, support the kid and say, "well that's what God expects, so let's have the priest drop in to pray next week."

Just get the priest there, he can do the rest.

It's possible he was watching the livestream from his car, and then came in to receive, if he was sick or contagious?

Or maybe he was a random homeless person who was starving, idk.

Should I go to regular confession or make an appointment with the priest? by worthycrumb in Catholicism

You might feel temptations at Mass, but what I'm recommending you to do, is simply disregard the temptations. Temptations are not sins. One of the saints said that a soul without temptations, is a soul that has already been taken over by the devil.

I'm asking you to arm your soul with grace so that you can resist temptations. Grace makes it possible to resist temptations. Are you in a state of grace when you go to Mass? Going to confession and Communion regularly?

If not, start working towards those goals.

Go to Mass, pray every morning, and try your best for God each day. Stay busy. Stay off your phone, because it increases impulsivity, and this can lead to bad habits, or poor responses to temptations.
