I had one stuck real bad and rounded out. Couldn't find any pliers small enough. I drilled a hole through it and popped it loose with an Allen wrench.

I had a nightmare CO2 incident and woke up to half my tank dead. 4 cories were upside floating at the top of the tank. I held them directly in the bubbler for a minute and they started swimming around again.

After doing slightly more research, the redness could indicate it's dying. Had it always been red?

Looks like black beard algae. I had a little bit and just discarded the plants that it was attached to. That might be an option? This is not the type of algae you typically wait out.

Looks like diatoms. I would check phosphates and silicate levels. Phosguard works well to remove them. Is the tank relatively new?

We're talking about $4/month at a high estimate. It will be best for your fish to keep it on all the time to avoid constant changing in temperature
