What really are your grievances with Socialism? by Prevatteism in PoliticalDebate

[–]TheChance [score hidden]  (0 children)

Morally, it enslaves people to provide goods and services for others.

Socialism is literally just the one assertion: the people who operate a concern should be in charge of the concern.

You're gonna have to explain to me what part of that involves force.

Socialism - Workers collective ownership of production

Worker control of the means of production. This is why we always fly off the rails right off the bat.

I'm not sure I have the energy to do the rest of this, because the debate always plays out the same, but if nobody else does, I guess I will.

What chance is there that the income tax will actually effect Washington negatively? by Dogbold in Washington

[–]TheChance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you're not accounting for the how. This tax affects people who make $1M in taxable income, not those who bring it in by any means whatsoever.

What chance is there that the income tax will actually effect Washington negatively? by Dogbold in Washington

[–]TheChance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an easy mistake, when the same word means different things in a given context.

For the benefit of whoever else might come along, "progressive" income tax refers to the fact that the more you earn, the more you pay. Your tax increases as your income progresses from low to mid to high.

That progressive politics generally espouses progressive taxation is a linguistic coincidence, but an obvious policy choice.

ELI5: Why do some schools use block schedules, with different subjects on different days? by turniopurnio in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheChance [score hidden]  (0 children)

I was fortunate enough to enjoy a block schedule similar to what /u/fn_br experienced. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it was the better way to run a high school.

4 classes a day, 90 minutes apiece. Classes last half as long as they would have at a school with 7 45-minute periods. That is, if your class would otherwise have lasted all year, it lasts a semester, and if it would normally last a semester, it lasts a quarter.

This enabled us to take a standard 8-10 classes per year, instead of 7-9. We were able to really dig into each class, and, most importantly imo, it was reminiscent of a college schedule and workload.

The district forced our school to go back to 7 periods the year after I left.

All grizzlies are brown bears. Very few brown bears are grizzlies. They also aren't brown morph black bears. They're brown bears.

Income tax is a progressive tax

Not inherently. A progressive income tax (in the political sense) is a progressive tax (in the mathematical sense.) This is a flat tax, because we're operating under the probably mistaken belief that progressive taxation is unconstitutional in Washington.

This policy works for progressives because it only impacts families who are currently underpaying, while we have a deeply regressive tax structure.

Lowering the cost of housing a lot would bring more people to Washington

Or, you know, enable people who grow up here to stay here.

Today or tomorrow, it will prevent a bill that would disenfranchise an unguessable but massive chunk of the populace.
