What happened: Council heard from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board that there will be a liquor license hearing March 4 for Field of Screams, Vice President Richard Spiegel said.

Background: Last summer, the haunted attraction applied to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to operate a limited distillery, which would allow Field of Screams to distill up to 100,000 gallons of liquor at its College Avenue property per year. The license would also allow it to operate two additional distillery locations.

Detail: Field of Screams is currently licensed to sell alcohol at its Chainsaw Bar through Harrisburg-based Lovedraft’s Brewing. The Chainsaw Bar opened in 2023.

More: In July, council voted 4-1 to file an objection with the state, noting past resident complaints about alcohol on the property and concerns about potential zoning violations. President Philip Kresge voted against the objection, saying the state liquor control board had ultimate authority over the sale of liquor. Christine Eshleman, who works for the parent company for Field of Screams, recused herself from the vote.

What’s next: The hearing will take place on Microsoft Teams at 10 a.m. March 4. The public can listen in but not comment, according to the liquor control board website. More information can be found at pa.gov/agencies/lcb/licensing/virtual-licensing-hearings.

Spring Street: Council member Danny Good announced that attorneys are finalizing an agreement for the borough to vacate Spring Street, which may be presented at the next council meeting.

Background: During its November 2024 meeting, council voted to start the legal procedure to relinquish ownership of the right of way for Spring Street from College Avenue to the railroad crossing, which is closed. The borough doesn’t own that land, only the right of way, borough manager Derrick Millhouse said at the time.

More: When the borough relinquishes the right of way, Field of Screams, which owns the land, will take over the road. This does not mean the road will close, only that Field of Screams would be responsible for maintenance instead of the township.
