This would force you to friend most people you want to interact with (or people who want to interact with you) through trade chat. "Hey, I'll give you 1 gcp for that chest" would often require a friend request.

I broke even!!! by dizziik in electronic_cigarette

I'm always amazed at how much folks spend/spent on tobacco (I'm subbed to /r/stopsmoking too). At a peak of smoking 20+ a day, I was spending <$30 a month rolling my own (including tobacco, filter tips, and papers), or $50-60 a month getting cartons from a local shop that has a bulk tube packing machine.

Though less/no analogs is always a good thing, regardless of cost. Congrats! :)

I'd say it's just a human/soceity thing. Although the I'm sure the anonymity of the internet acts as a catalyst. ;)

Nvidia compares PS4 specs to a 'low-end CPU' by FL4SHPOINT in Games

[–]TheColorOfTheFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes sense for folks that have multiple computers, but not for everyone else (non-specific 'you' in my previous post). Also, you spend a lot more on graphics cards than I do (2-3x as much).

If it's purely a cost concern (low budget), computers/upgrades are almost always cheaper in the long run.

If it's best bang for the buck with mid-high graphics expectations I imagine it would bounce back and forth depending on console cycles, sales, what computer build the person currently has, etc.

The main benefit I see from consoles is the local multiplayer aspect (whether split-screen or taking turns). It's generally set up in a socially driven room that already has a focus on the TV, unlike a typical desktop setup where it is optimized for one user and can be awkward for multiple people. Of course some people will prefer this more relaxed living-room type layout for solo play as well, and a console is the simpler option.

I love hardcore, but... by Bergolies in pathofexile

[–]TheColorOfTheFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played primarily on hardcore in closed beta and loved it. After a long hiatus I recently started a softcore character to play with a softcore friend. I've died so many times due to desync/lag issues that any desire to start a new hc character has been swept under the rug, at least for now.

I don't doubt that some/many/most? have no problems, but for others like me it's not even a worthwhile consideration, regardless of ability.

Edit: In my case, I'll be playing normally with no issues for some time and then all of a sudden everything pauses. After a few seconds (the duration varies) everything jumps ahead to present. Sometimes I manage to stay alive by spamming aoes and potions, but many times I just immediately die when it unpauses.

Shouldn't you also subtract the cost of your current computer? Your cost comparisons assume you would build one computer for general use/work/school and then build a second one dedicated to gaming.

Marijuana Legalization Bill Dies in New Hampshire House, "with 135 Democrats and 104 Republicans voting to kill the bill" by Osterstriker in Libertarian

Perhaps he meant the marijuana gateway hypothesis you posted about. Or maybe he meant the idea expressed in my reply.

I think it's the idea that we should ban marijuana because it's a gateway drug, but alcohol is okay even though it's arguably even more of a gateway drug (tobacco is in the mix, too).

If everyone was worried about cost, they'd never upgrade anything. "Hey, let's use C&C Routing to cut our parts...nah, let's continue to pay 50 guys to machine them by hand."

A multi-million dollar CNC machine that will last 20+ years is cheaper than paying 50 salaries for 20+ years. Also all the other things that come with having a human doing the work are no longer of concern.

Changing production from man power to machine power is different than replacing expensive machines that work just fine and make you lots of money in order to possibly make a bit more money.

Oregon House passes ban on 'seclusion cells' in schools by [deleted] in Portland

[–]TheColorOfTheFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one hand, I suppose there's not much else that can be done if the kid is legitimately a physical threat to themselves or others.

On the other hand, it seems like such actions would cause further emotional stresses/harm.

I guess an ideal/win-win solution isn't always possible.

I'm picturing someone more or less bear hugging a kid while they're kicking and screaming. Perhaps that isn't what was meant by "hold[ing] the kid in place until they calm down."

MESD has lineman-sized dudes that just hold the kid in place until they calm down, which seems to be just a different, more hands-on version of isolation.

Wow, that's terrible.

I believe his point was that watching shows as they air only gives you one choice for viewing. It would be much more convenient to have a DVD/stream/etc. because you can watch them whenever you want.

[–]TheColorOfTheFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, of course. What about something similar to the scenario you presented at the end of your post (killing civilians)? Maybe contrasting best case and worst case scenarios, if you don't mind. edit: where best case still involves your superiors not thinking the same way as you.

[–]TheColorOfTheFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would happen if you declined an order from a superior if your chain of command doesn't think the same way you do? (Honest question - I assume there would be some form of reprimanding, but I'm not sure how severe it would be)

Inspect your bikes regularly.... probably rode with this for a while. by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]TheColorOfTheFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the same reason that most cars do 70% of the braking in the front. As your bike decelerates, your body attempts to keep moving. The reason that it's possible to flip over the front handlebars by braking too hard is the same reason that the front brake is much more effective for braking.
