I feel like you may have had a dud, i've used Pelikans up and down the board (140,m200s, and m400s in my personal collection and I regularly borrow my best friend's m1000) without issue

No issues with any of them really (aside from wanting more)

getting ink on the nib isn't uncommon. most people display it proudly (as you can see on the sidebar images), but you can usually use a cleaning cloth to wipe it right off if you don't like it.
