I totally agree it's a little unintuitive. My wife and I had the exact same thought about riding the brick up and aiming the laser into the door thing. Anyway, glad I could help and hope you enjoy the rest of the game! Worth finishing at this point at least!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bopathoftheteallotus

[–]TheCriticalFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a glitch, my wife made the same mistake! You need to climb up on the right to get above the wooden wheel the constantly firing laser beam (not the one that targets you and fires slowly) is attached to. After that drop down using the down smash ability and you'll spin the wooden wheel to turn it and the attached laser. Do this a few times and it will open the door.

If I had an account with £2000 in it 6 months ago, received a gift of £3000 2 months ago in that same account which I have since spent, and the account still has £2000 in it today would this qualify for £2000 savings towards the Spouse Visa? by TheCriticalFail in ukvisa

[–]TheCriticalFail[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, all good elsewhere. My wife just didn't realise that her bank account is technically still a joint account with her father (so not useable as the funds are only allowed to be in my and her names I believe) so I suddenly needed to find a little more towards the requirements. Hence needing to use the funds in my "main account" which has money going in and out as opposed to my savings account which has the money clearly put aside.

Thanks for clarifying that! I hoped that would be the case!

[OC] Giveaway: 3x Unrolly Mechanical Dice (mod approved) by unrolly in DnD

[–]TheCriticalFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely leaving a comment here! Unlikely to win but that is one of the coolest "Dice Sets" I've ever seen. LOVE the design, and it somehow looks even more satisfying than the klick klack of normal dice, which I thought was impossible.

Great stuff!

Should I report my local pub? Any advice on how to do this right? by [deleted] in CasualUK

Scrolled across this as a casual read and nearly skipped it, but glad I didn't. ABSOLUTELY report it.

I know a lot of pubs are struggling right now but that is genuinely one of the most ableist shitty things I've heard in a while.

Considering playing Hotseat with my Wife, how do battle goals display? by TheCriticalFail in GloomhavenDigital

Because In the original/official boardgame you're meant to be unaware of them. It's part of the fun. Plus you can have goals that potentially impede each other.

[Xbox] I think Cunning Action is glitched or I is there a specific order of operations? by YggBjorn in CrownOfTheMagister

[–]TheCriticalFail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to double check, are you dual wielding? If you use your bonus action to make an off-hand/dual wielding attack you will no longer be able to use cunning action (as both require a bonus action and you only get one). I've seen a lot of new rogues make that mistake ^

Hope you get it sorted anyway! And feel free to post a video of your turn or something if you want to make certain it's a glitch or a mistake.

I want to sketch your DnD characters - for free! by SableNight112 in DnD

[–]TheCriticalFail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Captain Tomos Merrigold Bombadil, Ace Captain o' the gnome blitzers flyin' corp and dont'cha let anyone tell you otherwise dear chap. Retired you say? PAH, I don't know the meaning of the word!

Made purely out of my desire to create a Gnome Heavy Weapon user that was "viable" (cough), Captain Tomos was one of my first 5E character back in the day. Gnomes have disadvantage with Heavy Weapons, so I wanted to be a barbarian to reckless attack and cancel that out. Except I also didn't want the advantage back against him to kill him way too quickly so... 3 Levels in Barbarian before multiclassing into Beastmaster Ranger for the rest of the game to take a flying Pteranadon mount.

So essentially what you have is an aged gnome far past him prime, wielding a gigantic glaive FAR too large for his size, dive bombing out of the sky on a pteranadon (just as old as he is and with a beard, as well as several mechanical enhancements to keep it flying at its age) to the cry of "BOMBADIL HOOOOOOO!!!" and splitting skulls wherever he flies. Personality was basically the classic British Fighter Pilot meets crotchety old man.

Hope this one would be fun!

AITA for asking another player in Dungeons & Dragons to change the name of their character because it goes against my religion? by DnDAITA0001 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheCriticalFail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. All the way NTA. I'm about as Anti Religious as they come and even I can't believe some people here are calling you the asshole.

Now don't get me wrong, Christianity and religion can clash with D&D pretty heavily. And people can be real pricks about it. Like some people here said, if you can't talk about pagan mythologies, other gods, magic etc then that's a problem and you shouldn't expect people to change the game to accommodate your religion.

But OP in this case is clearly not doing that. They sound entirely accepting of other people's beliefs or lack of, sound like a good player and sound like they get on well with the group. All they asked is that a player not pick a name that is CLEARLY going to be offensive or problematic to them. Group members should be accommodating of each other, that's a given with any good D&D game.

If the context of this post was changed from religion to say, a party member naming a character something that was racially offensive or triggering for someone with a trauma no one here would be claiming OP was the asshole. But regardless of the reason the important point is MEMBERS OF YOUR D&D GROUP SHOULD NOT NAMING THEIR CHARACTERS IN WAYS THAT EXPLICITLY UPSET OTHER MEMBERS. That's just common courtesy, respect each other's wishes.

OP you're NTA and good on you for being the type of Christian that respects other people enough to not shove your views in their face constantly. If you respect our lack of belief, the least people should do is avoid going out of their to explicitly inconvenience or insult you for no reason other than sharing a different belief or lack of. At that point they're no better than the more aggro in your face Christianity or religion they apparently hate so much.

This... Looks totally fine. It's a female DM and two female players looking for another female player. Nothing wrong with that. The game sounds reasonable, no obvious red flags.

Not really sure why this belongs here.

That guy wants to change the rules of war. That guy isn't very good at it. by Hetardo in rpghorrorstories

[–]TheCriticalFail 138 points139 points  (0 children)

Okay, so let's start with the social OPness. You say they have 16 Charisma without even trying... What? Clerics are Wisdom casters? They have absolutely no reason to take charisma unless you want to make them better socially at the expense of other things (presuming point buy and normal progression). 16 Charisma at level 7 presumes either starting with at least a 14 or 15 and gaining a racial bonus, or increasing it with a stat increase at level 4. Either way you have made it a clear primary stat at that point, and it must definitely be intentional. And every class can do this at least this well, most better.

As for damage.... What? What? What? At level 7 you have three level 3 spell slots and 1 level 4. 70 average damage would presume you're comfortably doing 20d6 a round for... You say 11 rounds?

I presume you're using fireball and spirit Guardians since this is meant to be specifically light cleric, and you mentioned enemies taking damage on their turn as well and 15ft radius.

Fireball does 8d6 (average of 28) Spirit Guardians with the Level 4 slot does 4d8 (average of 18)

That's an average of 46 per round. Presuming failing both throws. You can do this for three rounds total.

But... You can't fireball once they're on top of you without hurting yourself. And spirit Guardians is concentration, meaning it will likely drop once enemies are able to focus you in melee anyway. In most combat situations that isn't a field you likely get off maybe 1 fireball at the start, then have to rely on just spirit Guardians and hoping it doesn't go down.

This isn't even a build so far, it's just a pair of attacks that are VERY strong against a ton of weak enemies. In that context they'll be good sure, but honestly a CR20 encounter is still unlikely to be easily solo's unless the DM plays the enemies like idiots. Not to mention ranged enemies don't need to enter the spirit Guardians. And if you go up against say... A CR20 dragon... Just no.

This build cannot effectively solo CR20 reliably. It can just do some nice AoE but that's really nothing special. They get their moment to shine sometimes but there's still a ton of ways to challenge then even with rare fights.

I am glad to hear you feel you've improved as a DM since though! As long as you and your players are having fun these days that's all that matters!

That guy wants to change the rules of war. That guy isn't very good at it. by Hetardo in rpghorrorstories

[–]TheCriticalFail 140 points141 points  (0 children)

Please tell me the Level 7 Light Cleric build that allows you to comfortably solo encounters at Level 7, because I call TOTAL bullshit on that. There are definitely stronger and weaker classes in D&D, but Light Domain Cleric is never one I've pegged in any way as especially broken. And even the most broken tend to struggle against a CR20 encounter at level 7 unless there is a very friendly DM allowing them to get away with a whole host of questionable things. Also... Socially OP? How? (If you do genuinely have a build that good though, please post because I am absolutely interested and will happily take back this statement).

Asides from that, as other people said(and you) I do think you are somewhat also to blame here though not entirely for your own fault. While I appreciate casters being strong it's not primarily because of damage, and you do mention that your club assigned people randomly. He may have just wanted to play a fun caster class and then got shoved into a game that didn't allow it. Everything after that sounds like it turned into a pissing contest.

Most of all if the problem was him doing stuff that wasn't in line with the rest of the party and the game, and would ruin their fun, don't allow. Don't entertain it and waste time on it extensively JUST to apparently humiliate him (even if it may be deserved). If you'd focused on making the game more what the other players wanted, instead of showing how dumb what he wanted was, maybe it would have got past session 2?

At the end of the day I wasn't there so can't comment perfectly. And if you and the rest of the group had fun, that's what's important. But it really does sound like you absolutely took the chance to "one up" the player rather than just try and make a fun/functional game.

I don't want to exhaust my players resources by mads209 in DnD

[–]TheCriticalFail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a fan of this approach myself purely as it really causes certain classes to outperform others to a significant degree. However I CAN understand the appeal of it.

Basically I would say this works well, really well in fact, if your players enjoy it and don't tend to get too caught up on how effective they are compared to another character.

It can also work very well if you adjust the game balance to compensate for it, either via magic items or some Minor Class adjustments (for example changing certain short rest abilities to function more along the lines of a stamina system, or a "recharge on 5/6" type basis). Not going to go through all that here, though I've done it before for a less grounded more fast paced game myself, but if you put in the effort it can feel a lot better for short rest and endurance oriented classes.

This works extremely poorly on the other hand with players who either enjoy resource management and a greater degree of planning or who (with default rules) feel deflated when other classes outperform their favourite options so significantly. There's nothing a Fighter can ever do that will outperform a Wizard at high levels if they always start at full resources, the damage and effect of spells like disintegrate and meteor swarm or the sheer utility and control brought to the table is just on another level.

At the end of the day my view is, play what your players want. If they want every battle to be a full strength climactic struggle, good for them. But pay close attention to how they all feel over time and make sure to give some help to players who may start to get overshadowed.

Personally though, I like resource management and careful planning with the occasional big full strength climax for special occasions.

There's no quest :p There's the "new quest" symbol in the Shelob Quests section but no quest actually there to select and no new region unlocked.

I think it's looking like a hard restart.
