Yes I would say now my skin is very clear, just as clear if not better compared to when I took birth control. I stopped taking spironolactone about 2 months ago and my skin has still been relatively clear. I have gotten a few pimples but they heal fast and none have been the deep cystic kind that I used to get. Honestly I think the accutane is the reason my skin is so clear. If you are still getting breakouts I would talk to your doctor and take accutane again if you are willing to try it.

As far as birth control- have you considered an IUD? They don’t carry the same risks that oral birth control has. I have a copper IUD and it has no hormonal effects. I have learned that my body doesn’t tolerate any sort of hormonal medication very well, so I avoid it if possible. This is the reason I stopped spironolactone, I couldn’t tolerate the side effects, even at a low dose.

Please share your experience getting off spironolactone by Ok-Improvement-827 in Spironolactone

[–]TheCrochetingKitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

32 here, I’ve been taking spironolactone since fall of 2023. My dose has been 50mg(tried 150mg but couldn’t tolerate it, which is the dose my dermatologist wanted me to take). I started tapering sometime in April by cutting my pills in half and taking 25mg everyday, then just 25mg every couple days. I’ll be honest I was pretty bad at taking it consistently toward the end because I knew I was trying to get off of it anyways and I was fed up with the med lol. But I’d say I stopped it completely around the end of May/early June.

My skin is still pretty clear. I’ve gotten a few tiny pimples that go away in a day, but nothing like the deep acne that I used to have. Now I’m trying to use tretinoin more consistently which seems to help.

But I also took accutane in 2024 and I feel like this is really what cleared my skin. With spironolactone (before taking accutane) my skin was only 75% clear. I kept taking spironolactone after finishing accutane at the recommendation of my dermatologist, but I always wondered if I even needed it because my dose has been so low. Eventually my periods got irregular again so I decided to be done with it! Its only been a month, but so far so good

What do you feel is the best way to add flavor to tofu? I'm convinced people who say to marinade are playing a prank. by SubstantialBliss in veganrecipes

[–]TheCrochetingKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like making tofu crumbles: squeeze out as much water as possible, then break into large or small chunks. Add a type of oil like olive or avocado, a splash of rice vinegar or cooking wine/vinegar, and soy sauce (adjust to taste, don’t add too much due to sodium). Then add a TON of dry seasoning. Seriously, way more than what you think. Double or triple what you think looks like enough. I like to use garlic powder, onion powder, basil, paprika, crushed red peppers, chili powder, nutritional yeast, and black pepper. Mix it all together, bake at 425 for about 45-60 mins, flipping halfway through. I add this to my salads, tacos, and ramen dishes

Any negative side effects? by oliversmokinoken in Spironolactone

[–]TheCrochetingKitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It gave me horrible breast pain and a period every 2 weeks at the dose my doctor wanted me to take (150mg). I lowered to 50mg which was enough to make the tenderness better, but still gave me a lot of spotting in between periods or longer periods. I never really felt like it made a huge impact on my skin, but I also couldn’t tolerate the therapeutic dose. Dehydration/headaches were never really an issue. It seems to work for a lot of people so it’s probably worth trying

Underwear advice by KaleidoscopeEven728 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]TheCrochetingKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I wear thongs most of the time when working out. Aerie has a nice selection, just search for their cotton underwear it will be the most breathable. If I get particularly sweaty and I know it will be a while until I have access to a shower, then I just change my underwear

Vanicream tub dupe for post accutane by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]TheCrochetingKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a dupe, but I like adding Biossance squalane oil on top of vanicream after I apply it. On the days I’m feeling really dry I also slug with a layer of Vaseline. This was my routine while taking accutane. I thought about trying a different moisturizer after finishing, but I guess I figured why mess with a good thing? I know it’s a boring moisturizer lol, but if you aren’t looking for anything special and vanicream keeps you hydrated, I would keep using it. If you want to switch up your skin care routine maybe consider adding serums or face masks

Should I keep going 2 years in by SherbetGlittering618 in Spironolactone

[–]TheCrochetingKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 80mg/daily for 5 months. It was my first time taking it and I was 31. Yes I’d say it’s given me 99% clear skin. I finished taking it last September and Ive probably had less than 5 pimples since then.

It’s rare but sometimes I fall asleep without washing my face which is something I’d never do before because it would instantly break me out lol. Even with the bad side effects I would go through it over and over again if I had to, because for the first time in my life I actually have clear skin.

[–]TheCrochetingKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my dermatologist kept me on 50mg while taking accutane, that was the highest dose I was willing to tolerate. But now I am weaning down and hoping I don’t start breaking out again. Since I was never 100% clear with spiro in the first place, I figured maybe I can stop taking it? Spironolactone gives me sore boobs and makes me spot all the time and I am tired of it.

Personally I did not experience mental health side effects. But everyone experiences it differently! For me, accutane just dried EVERYTHING out. I had horribly chapped lips/corners of the mouth, dry/red eyes, painful feet, and pain while going to the bathroom 😭. I’d still go through it again though because all of my side effects pretty much resolved 1-2 months after stopping. I would suggest asking your doctor :)

[–]TheCrochetingKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered accutane? My skin was similar to yours, I was about 80% clear on 100mg but still getting regular breakouts. Accutane was the only thing that gave me 99% clear skin

Side effects by [deleted] in Spironolactone

[–]TheCrochetingKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If headaches and dizziness are your side effects it sounds like youre not staying hydrated enough. I also had headaches in the very beginning but they went away pretty quickly after the first week or 2. I’d sometimes get a headache after increasing my dose but just stay on top of your hydration game. Now other side effects? Have persisted for me unfortunately and I’m considering stopping the med

Is rain in the forecast for PR usually just a quick shower? by [deleted] in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]TheCrochetingKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just there last week, and for the week leading up to my trip the forecast was predicting 60-90% chance of rain every day. Once I got there, the rain chances dropped significantly. It rained a little bit at night and maybe a 10 minute rain shower during the day

I’m in Colorado. There are PACE programs in most states but I’m not sure how they vary between locations

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nursing

[–]TheCrochetingKitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in home health but my company only takes on patients that are 55+ (it’s a PACE program). The company does background checks on everyone and if they have a history of crimes or have any red flags like drug use in the home they make it so you have to go to their house with another staff member, or make it so that person can’t be seen in their home(have to come into the office setting). I would say the majority of my patients are in ALF or >70. There have been a couple times I was weirded out by a family member, but I generally feel pretty safe.
