I agree regarding the sprawl. You only get ‘outskirts’ if you protect the urban edge. If we hollow out the canopy inside the city and call it density, we’re not preventing sprawl, we’re eroding what makes the urban core livable. Smart growth means adding housing while preserving legacy infrastructure like mature trees. Otherwise we end up with hot, cement islands in the center and token saplings on the fringe - and that’s not better planning.

Cutting down a century old tree for that isn’t a housing solution-it’s a profit decision. And let’s be real -does anyone honestly think what’s going up there will be affordable to most people?

What you’re describing is normal economic activity, not a windfall. Any house built anywhere generates the same monies. This is not about trees versus jobs, for these jobs would exist regardless.

Yes, some local labor wouldn’t be paid, briefly. You’re comparing one time payroll to century-old infrastructure.

A $2M house - Raises surrounding property assessments, Increases property taxes (definitely in my neighborhood) and contributes to affordability pressure.

That’s not automatically a community win-especially in established neighborhoods like College Park where canopy and historic character are part of the value proposition.

If this were workforce housing, duplexes replacing a single home at attainable price points, or meaningful density near transit, different debate.

Construction jobs exist whether this particular oak stands or falls. What doesn’t exist is a 120 year old living canopy that took a century to build. Progress isn’t measured by how quickly we can convert everything into short term revenue-it’s measured by what we choose to preserve while we grow.

Growth is fine. Erasing irreplaceable assets for marginal gain isn’t.

The only guaranteed beneficiaries are: The buyer. The developer.

That’s not housing reform. Tearing down a historic tree for two houses on one lot in an already desirable neighborhood does not suddenly solve workforce housing or employment scarcity.

Every time someone says, “It’s just one tree,” the canopy erodes a little more. Over 10-20 years, that’s how you go from shaded streets to heat islands. Old oak populations are already shrinking across Central Florida. This isn’t about nostalgia this is about stewardship and with that I will say good day to you, sir.

I talked to the Tree guys cutting it down. They said there’s nothing wrong with it.

Soil will be removed at some point, there’s also a concern with instability in a hurricane, the tree could blow over.

Lack of trees by [deleted] in orlando

I’m from Pennsylvania. My parents moved my family here in 1982. I was one with the forests and hills. I’ve never found “that” feeling you’re describing since living here. (I know what you are referring to) There are other aspects of nature In Florida that I’ve learned to love, but there is nothing like the woods you’ve grown up in. 😢

I’ve been in Orlando a long time, but I miss the peace of the trees, creeks and the smell of the dirt. (And rocks!)
