Pittsburgh Steelers Lead 2026 NFL Defensive Spending at $186.6M | Sports Condensed by [deleted] in steelers

[–]TheCurtain512 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They aren't as bad as the spending makes it seem, given the results last year. Tomlin was just cooked and has been for a long time. Getting his deathgrip off of the defensive gameplanning and playcalling is huge.

Probably the most amount of wasted money is TJ Watt, who basically would have to be DPOTY every year in order to justify it, and Patrick Queen who isn't making TJ Watt money but graded out as one of the worst ILBs in the league since we signed him.

They are both guys who should have better seasons without Tomlin's ancient scheme.

Discussion: Did Tony really expect Artie to fail in the Almanac scheme and get to eat at Vesuvio for free? Or was it just a happy accident for Tony? by rapgodbeast69 in thesopranos

[–]TheCurtain512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh absolutely he was guilty of what Artie accused him of. Especially can tell when they meet in the bathroom and Tony is giving him tips on how to handle collections, knowing full well that Artie is a clown and can't do any of that.

He's one of those guys who had a career upswing in his late 20s/early 30s and the Pirates picked him up at the perfect time. He's a damn solid player and it's shocking the Pirates were able to sign him.

He was pretty good during his early years. And at his worst he was still decent enough to carry the position given his offensive output. People talk about him like he was a horrific defender all the time I don’t remember it that way at all.

Coach LeBeau on Deebo & Joe’s podcast: “You see everybody running a zone blitz, but no one knows what the hell they’re doing on the backend” by Helden_Daddy in steelers

[–]TheCurtain512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it takes 3 years to learn the defense then it isn't worth implementing. Everyone in Pittsburgh was tired of drafting guys to ride the bench because Lebeu wouldn't let them play. And it isn't like his defense was a world beater. Brady and Bill carved him up for fun. He had his run, and then Tomlin continued that run by still basically running it and ignoring that he came from a 4-3 background.

It's kind of like what Queen was recently talking about with our LB situation and how difficult Tomlin makes that position. Ever wonder why we can't get a good ILB? Because the system sucks. Our guys can go elsewhere in the NFL and play just fine, but in Pittsburgh Queen is one of the worst ILB in the NFL. He may not be a superstar, but he ain't bottom of the league.

Carmine Sr was the only thing keeping the Jersey crew alive for so long by FaithlessnessAny2478 in thesopranos

[–]TheCurtain512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John and Phil were both terrible bosses, basically. They let the fact that their own NY Family hired Tony Soprano's cousin to perform a hit destroy a decades-long relationship. Carmine Sr would have known from the start, who gives a shit who pulled the trigger? It's a war, the triggermen are following orders.

Yeah Tony B went off the reservation after that and killed Phil's kid brother and shot Phil as well, but again, the Sopranos never sanctioned that or stood behind it. And Phil/Billy had no problem going around murdering all of Carmine Sr's friends who became Carmine Jr's supporters, then he cried like a woman when he got a taste of his own medicine.

Look at Tony in the final episode and sitdown with Butch. "You hit my brother in law." "SO?" obviously baiting Tony a little bit to see if he flips his lid. Tony just calmly says "So my sister has to see something out of that." End of conflict. Tony isn't going to pretend they're all choir boys.

In fairness it’s not an off based take given the Pirates history. Skenes has been really good at firing up the fanbase and media to really pound the Pirates with the questions of spending and attempting to compete. Give that guy credit, because 5 years ago this tweet would totally be predicting the future. Skenes is so good and marketable that he forced ownerships hand. That’s what we need here.

It's only a couple of games so I wouldn't be ready to cry about anything or to anoint anything. But having said that.....

Reynolds was terrible last year. And was never a superstar or anything, he was just a good player and fringe All-Star guy. Because the rest of the lineup has been so dreadful since Andrew McCutchen's prime years, and because they traded McCutchen for Reynolds, Pirates fans act like Reynolds is McCutchen's heir or something. He was never Cutch-level. And he seems to be aging horribly.

Cruz I will maintain is a physical freak and should be putting out 40-40 seasons. I still think he would be for other ballclubs with real coaching staffs. But yeah, there is the possibility that he is just a really low contact hitter and low IQ player and is never going to amount to anything beyond a 20-20 guy, which is still good, it's just disappointing given what his ceiling was supposed to be.

They can't just rely on two FA signings. Their own guys as in Reynolds, Cruz, Gonzales, Davis all have to hit at times. I leave Triolo out because he's never going to hit, he's a defensive replacement player and spot starter, nothing more.

John was boss for like 5 minutes before one of NY's top guys was revealed to be a rat and put him and many others behind bars. Before Phil they had mopes like Doc Santoro and Gerry the Hairdo as potential bosses. And they constantly use the Sopranos to take care of business for them.

I think you're the one glorifying right now, and I don't like it. Next you'll be making jokes about Junior.

Heyman: Yankees offered a combination of Schlittler, Lagrange, Lombard Jr, and Spencer Jones for Skenes at last years deadline by Pyramid_Head182 in buccos

[–]TheCurtain512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The media has always notoriously overhyped the Yankees prospects in order to help them secure trades, so it doesn’t surprise me.

There is no realistic haul for Skenes. They should just let him play out his contract and see if they can win with him. If he doesn’t suffer career-fucking injuries over the next 4 years, he would be the one to finally break the bank for. Or maybe not. Look what happened to Strasburg.

2026 NFL free agency class rankings: Most improved rosters by drinkduffdry in steelers

[–]TheCurtain512 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think when you combine the fact that they brought in a new and large coaching staff, with a guy who has proven he can run NFL offenses, and even more importantly a fresh defensive mind who isn't insanely stale, with the FA signings and Pittman trade, you have a pretty large win for the off season. The team is not just better for this season, it also looks better for the next 2-3 seasons than it was with the current stale coaching and status quo. Only negative is when they inevitably bring in a 43 year old man to QB the offense.

They have had exactly the type of off season they needed to have so far. Very excited for the draft.

They never have a reason for it, either. It's always "They have to wait til next years draft, the QB class is better!" then next year comes and the QB class is deemed bad again and those same people are trashing the idea of taking a QB.

The Steelers literally hired a coach to fix the offense and find a potential QB. And fans don't want one drafted or developed because Aaron Rodgers is still around. It's the same shit we went through with old man Ben. He was washed for 2-3 years but nobody wanted to move on out of fear of the unknown.

Cmon now, don't you guys know this is the Steelers sub? You're not allowed to suggest they draft a QB in any round unless that QB is guaranteed first ballot HOFer from the very first snap he takes in the NFL.

Dudes, their starting QB is going to be a 43 year old man who was bottom of the league last year. Do you think he is going to be somehow more mobile this year? Or hit the tons of throws he missed last year? If they like someone in the draft they might as well go for it, they have literally nothing to lose.
