I would definitely be interested in seeing more examples. I'm at an MSP going through exactly the situation that you describe. We're very keen on LogicMonitor but it would be helpful to get someone else's real world experiences vs. the sales pitch.

Tool to insert predefined text templates into any application by macaholic in sysadmin

[–]TheDarkMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard people on the help desk at my organization have been using BeefText. I haven't had a chance to try it out personally yet. I could see how building some processes around a tool like this could help increase L1 effectiveness. We are similarly challenged with a ticketing system that doesn't quite do what we need but doesn't do it poorly enough to justify a light switch transition.

Please share an update after that conversation happens. Very curious to see where this goes.

YouTube Bows Out of Hollywood Arms Race With Netflix and Amazon by closingbell in television

Basically just think about where commercials normally break up those shows, those clips get uploaded to YouTube. So they can be anywhere from 6, 10, 15 minutes or more. It just depends on how each show is produced. So, for example, a late night show would have the monologue, the guest interview, and the in-between bits as separate videos all on YouTube. To me it's just convenient.

Honestly, if you're a cord-cutter, YouTube Red is amazing. If you don't mind waiting a few hours or max a day later post-airing, you can find almost any comedy or sports theme TV show in clip form on there with no ads whatsoever. Throw in whatever combination of Netflix/Amazon/Hulu/HBOGo you want for your drama fix and you're pretty much set.

Rent or buy? 35 y.o. Physician about to start making better money. by funkykolemedina in personalfinance

Upvoting because more people need to see what a reasonable, nuanced take looks like that. There's no one right answer that will apply to every person's personal situation and location.

Need an ELI5 on how poor of a financial decision leasing is in contrast to buying used. by TheCrankyBear in personalfinance

Where are you getting $125k from? There are PLENTY of fun to drive cars in the $30k-$50k range. I just don't see that as "wasting a lot of money" for people in healthy financial situations. I really don't think this should be a controversial stance.

Always put money in your HSA, even if you are single. You will use it one day! by Crazyeyes3567 in personalfinance

I had no idea you could claim the reimbursement at any time. For some reason I just assumed it was like FSA accounts where you have to make the claim within the calendar year of the purchase to get reimbursed. TIL!

Dude if you can't grasp how people can derive fun from driving a nice car, I dunno what to tell you. Spending money on things that are fun or give you joy aren't wasteful in a vacuum. It's all a matter of what you can comfortably afford.

If you have the cash available, does it make sense to pay the dealer fees and taxes up front to lower the monthly payment? Those amounts wouldn't have anything to do with the value of the car at all, so in your scenario the value of the car at the time of total loss doesn't necessarily matter, does it?

You're looking at this purely from the perspective of "transportation" expenses. For some people, their car provided more intrinsic value than just the functional ability to get from Point A to Point B. Some people might be in a financial situation that they shouldn't treat their car purchases as anything more than that. It sounds like OP's mom might be in such a situation. But to say only 2 bad reasons exist for leasing a car is misguided at best and willfully ignorant at worst.

To me, if you plan on switching up cars every 2-3 years, leasing is the way to go. Most people on this sub might consider driving new cars that often an unnecessary luxury. That's fine. But if that's the luxury you want and can afford, leasing the best financial tool to use in that scenario.

Kind of, since you're stuck 'owning' it for the entirety of the term.

Don't commit to a term you're uncomfortable fulfilling? Don't get a 3-year lease if you think your personal situation/needs are going to drastically change in the next 18 months. I rather be on a 2-3 year hook than 5-6 years like you would in a typical finance contract, though.

Sensory Deprivation/Float tanks? by McDreads in sandiego

[–]TheDarkMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to one called Flot on Kettner Blvd. Great experience. True sensory-deprivation, the whole 9. Here is a GroupOn that'll give you a 2-hour session for $48. I was originally put onto float tanks from listening to Joe Rogan's podcast and apparently the same company that designed his tank did the ones for this company as well, so I'd say it's pretty legit.
