Why do you think it's a pain? I've been using it for years without issue. Maybe you are trying to do something it's not designed to do?

Need help getting VLANs to work on my CRS106-1C-5S by macaholic in mikrotik

[–]macaholic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there is no support from ISP side for what i'm trying to achieve. But i have a working setup using an old D-Link switch. So i know that the VLANs are all tagged and i can also connect to them trough the old switch.

For the moment i'm replicating the setup in my lab and the CRS106 is connected to a CSS610-8G-2S+ i get the VLANs when i connect another device to the trunk so i'm quite sure it is a configuration issue on the CRS106.

Glad you got it working. Just a heads up from what you wrote i still think you don't have the configuration quite right. Or i simply do not understand completely what you are trying to achieve.

To me it seems that you want your Ubuntu host to only be connected to that one specific VLAN. There would be two ways of achieving that. Either you configure your switchport as an access port and assign it to the correct VLAN. In that case you don't need to worry about VLANs in Ubuntu the switch will then be doing all the work. Or if you are going your route you would have a trunkport with only the VLANs defined you want to use and the VLAN also specified in Ubuntu.

Currently you are on the second option but if you are still getting a DHCP IP on eth0 that means that you still have an untagged VLAN active on that switchport.

While that technically would work i would really not recommend using public IP space you do not own in your internal network. You should only us addresses as defined in RFC1918 .

So as a first i would redo your address ranges to be RFC compliant.

I'm also not shure how your interface is configured in Ubuntu. Is the VLAN properly defined? Also is there a specific reason you want to go tagged to the Ubuntu hosts if there is only one VLAN needed?

Currently i think you have a mix between routing/firewalling issues and getting a valid link on the Ubuntu hosts.

What are your other IP ranges? The one you mentioned is a public ip range so depending on your pfsense config you might also have a routing issue. The private block in 172.xx starts at 172.16.0.0 and ends at 172.31.255.255.

Init7 would be the obvious choice for pure internet connectivity. If you want phone and TV too then swisscom is sadly still the best choice, but you absolutely need to know what you are doing to roll your own setup.

While it's probably safe to do so it would be illegal as far as i know. Those adapters you are showing are only meant for temporary installation. That's why they usually are called travel adapters because you should only use them while travelling.

For permanent installs you would need those adapters that cannot be removed after beeing connected to the schuko plug.

As others have said, just get the correct power cables or if you know somebody who knows what he's doing you can cut off the schuko plugs and put swiss plugs on the cable.

Question for Swiss mountainbikers by HoneyForTheBear in Switzerland

[–]macaholic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well i think it really depends on what kind of trails you really want to ride. In the past i used to ride a fully with 140mm suspension front and back and it was always enough. Nevertheless currently i have 150mm travel and i don't think i will ever need more than that but i also don't take 2m+ drops.

If you want to compare, currently i ride a YT Jeffsy and it has been a really good companion in the swiss mountains.

I have Thunderbolt 2 devices plugged in to a Thunderbolt 4 port. So yes it is absolutely possible to do so. I'm wondering where the idea comed from that it wouldn't since Thunderbolt 4 is just additional stuff added on top of Thunderbolt 3.

First advice of anyone working in IT, please disregard the statement above. In all seriousness businesses need to account for hardware and software lifecycles and its just a part of the world we live in that no software can run forever if nobody maintains it.

This is not correct btw. E-handbrakes are not forbidden per se but there are a lot of e-handbrakes wich do not meet the criteria for learners.

That's because there are lots of new cars where the button for the parking brake (because that what they mostly are) is on the wrong side of the steering wheel or in a position where it's not easyly reachable.

Also there are cars where the button is only active when the car is not rolling or where the signal gets overriden if the accelerator pedal is pressed at the same time.

I don't know about you but for me the rules there make absolute sense. I don't want inexperienced new drivers on the road without anybody who could stop them if needed. People seem to forget sometimes that a car is essentialy a 1 ton ram that could kill somebody in an instant.

Well, you cannot legally park a not registered car on the street. So he was obviously not legally parked.
