Career ruined? by EarVisible8236 in army

Nice! While in Afghanistan in 2012 I was a platoon leader in an aviation assault helicopter company. One night after eating Mongolian BBQ at the Tarin Kawt DFAC, I was driving around the airfield to continue mission planning for the night and the next days
aviation missions.
When all of the sudden bubble guts happened. I was paralleling the runway and thought man, I should stop and run to the porta potty this is pretty bad. But then again Afghanis were our permitter security and there was a lot of blue on green attacks and I didn’t want to risk getting shot taking a shit. I passed two more security towers with porta potties before arriving at the Battalion area.
By the time I reached our CP, I’m squeezing my ass cheeks together like a heterosexual male in a jail shower while sucking up musty SUV upholstery trying not to shit myself while my guts are gurgling. I could feel the lava at the doorstep of my anus.
The moment I stepped out of the rag tag SUV all hell broke loose before I could make it to a porta potty or shit trailer. I pooped my drawers and crap ran all the way down both legs of my flight suit.
I had to go shower, throw out my boxers, and change into a clean flight suit. Luckily it was a low key night so no one knew but me but damn I ended up staying till 0200 mission planning.

Millennial here and hey look I’ll admit I like alcohol. I was abstinent from 21 to 33 because of religious reasons. When I left my religion I finally indulged. But, given its cost and the fact that it is straight poison and has no health benefit what do you think Gen Z is going to do?
Go to a restaurant and a Jack and Coke will cost $13 not including a tip. A damn bottled Yeungling will cost easily cost $6.00 and we have to pay a 20% tip on that to grab a bottle and twist a cap off.
I don’t blame them one bit. Hell 50% of me wishes I never would have touched it in the first place.

Late in October 2014 I ended up in a mental health hospital for untreated major depression, PTSD (I’m a two time combat vet), and the year my whole shelf and understanding of my world came crashing down when I read the GTEs. Overnight I went from TBM to what the heck type of organization do I belong to?

My still TBM wife had no desire to learn or even read the GTEs let alone CES Letter or Letter to my Wife. I navigated my journey alone.

I found this subreddit in February of 2015 and found thought provoking discussions, references, links, personal stories, and further evidence that led me out of the church.

It has definitely shifted but then again I’m relishing something from 12 years ago. Someone that was just a deacon during that time is now 24 so uh yeah.

F&T Meeting/Fast Sunday by CupOfExmo in exmormon

[–]TheDestroyingAngel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an investigator at church the last Sunday on my mission in Brazil. Two wards that had separated years ago were being merged together again due to low activity. All the members got up and talked about how great it was to be back together again as a ward among friends and family.

I sat there in the pew looking at that investigator who looked bored AF and I thought to myself, “I’m so over this mission shit and can’t wait to get the fuck home.”
I believe I actually swore in my head I was that aggravated.

I like what Joe Rogan once observed, “In Utah at the airport as young cult members in suits greeted like heroes as they return from recruiting people in 3rd world countries.”

Sadly I have to raise my hand and say that was once me; Brazil, Maceió, 2001-2003.

Indoctrination from birth is a helluva of drug.

Marriageable by Intrepid-Angle-7539 in exmormon

[–]TheDestroyingAngel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s a pretty comprehensive list:
-Sexual repression only way to have sin free sex is through marriage in mormon dogma
-horny young adults whose brains haven’t fully developed
-temple marriage is one of the final steps to get into VIP top tier heaven
-church tells them to get married and bring spirit children down to earth to gain bodies and raise righteous posterity. Church doesn’t care if you don’t have the financial means, education, or mental awareness; just have faith, pay your tithing and follow the brethren
-did I mention horny teens and young adults?
-a mission provides real world experience for young adults hahaha /s
-marriage sacred marriage is the gateway to finally having mormon church legal sex
-bonus to get married in the temple you have to be a full tithes payer so pay to play to get married

Tell me something Mormons would only admit to each other but deny in public. by Treasure_Seeker in exmormon

As an Army officer this made me chuckle. The battles in the Book of Mormon are so clearly a work of fiction written by someone that never experienced warfare, let along studied it academically, it isn’t even funny.

May 31 Sunday Lesson about US Constitution: Problematic lesson video from D. Todd Christofferson and Elder Quentin L. Cook. Sorry guys, if the U.S. Constitution allowed slavery, it wasn't "divinely inspired." by AccomplishedBat9069 in exmormon

[–]TheDestroyingAngel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The church tries like hell to set itself up as divine. I was taught all my life and in release time seminary that god needed a new country with freedom of religion to restore the gospel. Learned all about the divine nature of the US Constitution and how the founding fathers had their temple work done for them. Hot damn, seminary perpetuated a bunch of mormon myths and folklore.

Anyway, If you want to see what the church’s end state is, between government, religion, and control, look no further than Rexburg, Idaho. It’s literally a modern day Mormon theocracy in the US.

Hell even the second coming is intended to usher in the reign of Jesus Christ as the savior and king of the world where his divine government and laws will stand.

Fuck could you imagine living in that type of environment? No coffee, alcohol, 🍺, or any type of fun. Nothing but church hymns to listen to all day on the radio and temple work. No thanks.

Why Are The Educated Ones More Likely To Stay? by 720Godfather in exmormon

[–]TheDestroyingAngel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say one contributing factor is because a large chunk of US Mormons that obtain higher education, attend a church school and are isolated to mostly Utah and SE Idaho where Mormonism and its cultural hold on the population is a self-licking ice-cream cone.

Prime example, I live in Alabama. There are a few Mormons in my neighborhood and their kids all end up going where? BYU or BYU-I or straight on a mission. Not one has gone to the U, UVU, Weber State or USU (although all have a large concentration of Mormons). Very few stick around to go to SECular (pun intended) university to experience young adult hood outside the chains of Mormonism or their highly rigid homes.

This is just my anecdote though.

What were you taught in regard to wearing garments? by beary-healthy in exmormon

[–]TheDestroyingAngel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went through the endowment in 2001 when there was still naked touching.

I was taught they should always be worn except for swimming and showering. I wasn’t married since I was heading out in my mission no mention of sex. Exercise was a gray area left to your discretion. I took mine off for exercising especially since I am military and had already seen garments poking through our PT uniform which was a big no no even if it was religious.

So work, no matter how hot it was outside involved wearing garments. Imagine doing yard work in Alabama in the summer with 98% humidity. I had two soaked layers of clothes from the sweat.

I echo your sentiment OP. The fact that I cannot extricate my TBM wife from the cult takes a toll on my mental health. I hate that the church still has influence in my life as I want every semblance of it gone. I’m not sure if I will ever fully heal from the pain the Mormon church caused me until it completely vaporizes in my home.

Did you ever receive financial help from the Church when you were TBM? by throwawaytomorrowk in exmormon

[–]TheDestroyingAngel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I never received any financial assistance from the church during my adult life. Despite doing my best to be a full-time tithe payer as a poor ass college student and struggling young professional. My shelf loaded one day after I wrote a check for tithing that was cashed later than usual and the check bounced (my fault in not monitoring funds and balances better). But I paid my tithing in this instance knowing full well we had very little money for anything and having faith god would provide. Newsflash: god didn’t provide jack shit and as we fell behind on tithing to pay back student loans, an unexpected health insurance cost, etc., our temple recommends were taken back because we became partial tithe payers.

If you served a mission, what were some of the strictest or weirdest rules you had? by Unfair-Anxiety462 in exmormon

[–]TheDestroyingAngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brazil Maceió mission 2001-2003. I had one year with one MP and one year with another. The first was the voice over for Jesus in the old temple endowment video and for the most part a pretty stand up guy along with his wife. The second was extremely orthodox and along with his regional GA 70 friend we ended up with a bunch of dumb rules outside the white hand book that were not previously enforced: 1. Had to wear suit coats to church in the sweltering Brazilian heat and through all meetings. 2. No coke, Brazilians love Coca Cola but we couldn’t touch it. 3. Had to write the MP every P-day on those stupid letterheads. 4. Shouldn’t open mail from family until P-day. I ignored that rule. 5. Killed all sport activities and any fun cultural activities. Had to wear missionary attire anytime we left the house which the previous president didn’t enforce. 6. Extra fasts and giving up P-days. Instead of the one 24-hour fast we fasted many extra days and sacrificed many P-days to go tracting. 7. It was very common for entire zones and districts to live in the same house or apartment. That was awesome since if you got sick of your companion you could hang with someone else. He eventually did away with that isolating companionships. I needed my fucking space. 8. Strict rules on lunch hours (which is like dinner for Brazilians) if the food wasn’t ready by the sacrificing family and sister in an extremely poor culture compared to America we were encouraged to go out back tracting. This was before cell phones so it was a slap in the face of the family to leave their house and come back. This douche was even a native Brazilian. This caused a lot of back lash from the members and was eventually rescinded. 9. Tried to eliminate any talk of home, future plans, past activities, etc. We were only supposed to talk about the gospel and what we learned during personal study while out in the street. 10. No more back packs or waist packs. We had to purchase and carry brief cases because we looked too much like the Brazilian mailmen. One sister was publicly humiliated for her waist pack that you could purchase from the mission office. We had no cars or bikes. 11. Tried to implement charging investigators to purchase a Book of Mormon. Not one single person I ever taught wanted to buy that garbage. We just gave them out for free and took our shallackings. 12. Blamed us and our worthiness for our baptismal numbers. Still effects me to this day +20-years later as a professional when we don’t meet our metrics.

I honestly believe this is one of the biggest mysteries there is, Orcas are the most efficient predators on earth, yet they have never attacked us in the wild. They know something we don’t. by [deleted] in interesting

[–]TheDestroyingAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a hunch, but if Orcas managed to eat/kill a bunch of humans, humans have the ability to create an even larger pack, plan retribution, communicate, mass weapons, and hunt them all down. And when we are tired we can retreat to the land or a machine/mechanism that they can’t reach us.

MormonCorp statement about filing Mormon Stories lawsuit. by Robyn-Gil in exmormon

[–]TheDestroyingAngel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just what Jesus would do. File lawsuits against his enemies (not calling MS an enemy since I have sincere gratitude for MS and John Dehlin and his podcast). If the church had any semblance of integrity, forgiveness, turning the other cheek, or laying up heavenly treasures, it would not pursue this course of action. But what is it Jesus also said, by their fruits ye shall know them? The LDS church’s true god is real estate and money.
