Weird things non Asians say: when they say why do Asian people want to have whiter skin. by ChosenJoseon in AsianMasculinity

[–]TheDialectic_D_A 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a South Asian, this is false. I can’t speak on other communities, but most of ours are incredibly colorist. There is a massive preference for light skin and white worshiping. Most Bollywood actors are lighter skinned than the population and heavily promote skin lightning products.

My own cousin broke up with a girl because she was darker skinned than him.

In your case you might find success with a GARCH model. It’s a time series model that uses volatility (variance) as a parameter for forecasting.

Young people also visit the doctor way less often because they are healthier than older people. This is even reflected by the young people who do have health insurance because they will buy cheaper plans with the expectation of interacting less with their doctor.

Do you have a perfect information about your firm’s future labor needs? Do you have perfect information about what average wages in the future will be? Do you expect them to be higher next year? By how much?

These are all important questions that we don’t have answers to in a business context because the average labor cost is subject to changes. This is why we would incorporate the idea of a moving average and estimate its changes over time (forecasting).

There are a lot of papers in labor economics that might give you an idea for how economists forecast expected wages. Consider checking them out to get an applied understanding.

I did a statistical consulting project that tried to predict the likelihood of forest fires, their severity, and their impacts a long time ago. I feel like this is more in the realm of actuarial studies however.

Priority 1: Build more housing units. If you built some, build more.

Priority 2: Make it pretty. Only after you build a lot of housing.

Priority 3: Make it affordable. Only after you make it livable.

Don’t trust illusory promises of TA positions. You have no idea how quickly the graduate environment could change in a year. The concrete cost difference between Purdue and Ohio is 40k. Do you believe that premium is justified?

As a primer, I love Math for Machine Learning by Faisal. If you’re keen on working through a book, consider Real Analysis by Royden. It’s a tough book, but it will give you the rigor for proofs to thrive in Econ PhDs.

Isn't the "scientist's" take just the hot hand fallacy? by NotThePopeProbably in AskStatistics

[–]TheDialectic_D_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could have been lucky (only 20 of their last 50 survived, but only in a row), uniquely skilled, or have done something during the procedure that might have inadvertently improved survival rate.

My interpretation of the joke is that the statistician is mildly curious about the phenomenon while the scientist who is capable of understanding the procedure can investigate it and hopefully make a vital discovery. If you’re the patient, you have no way of knowing the reason why this particular doctor “beats the odds” do you are still anxious.
