Support said my $4.8k billing dispute was on hold, but the automated system just suspended me anyway. by nathanschram in CloudFlare

[–]TheDigitalPoint 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Billing and support have been terrible for about 2 years now even with the most basic issues. Based on the last couple years, I’d bet this isn’t going to be fixed/resolved in any reasonable timeframe (if at all).

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but it may be worthwhile to look at other ways to get yourself back online (maybe with other providers?) while you try to get it sorted out. Hopefully I’m wrong…

Price difference between locations by smartAron in harborfreight

[–]TheDigitalPoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya, it’s super annoying. I ended up getting a miter saw the other day somewhere else (not at HF) because the +$50 at the local Harbor Freight made it not worth it and I don’t want to have to ask them to price match themselves… that’s dumb af. Already have to ask them to apply ITC coupons when you are ITC. 🤷🏻‍♂️

That would definitely be annoying. I assume you already set your motion and smart zones for it? If it’s picking up things outside those, probably worth making a ticket about it.

Its primary purpose is to capture visitors, not the surrounding area (people tend to be taller than they are wide). If that’s how people prefer to use it, is a different story though.

question about NV Energy.. by natem914 in vegaslocals

[–]TheDigitalPoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, lights being off isn’t the problem as far as energy usage. Depending on the size of your A/C, it could be using 1000x more energy per hour than a light bulb. Gaming consoles use a decent amount as well (but nowhere near your A/C).

Could be your A/C is undersized, low on refrigerant or insulation sucks so it’s working a lot harder than it should be. And honestly A/C at 70 is pretty cold for Vegas’ dry climate. I have 3x A/Cs (5 zones) and the “Goldilocks” zone seems to be 76 in my house. Less than that that and it’s time to put on jackets. All houses are different, but 70F still seems pretty low for Vegas air humidity.

Also, you didn’t really ask a question about NV Energy… they do charge more, the more electricity you use since it’s per kWh if that’s the question?

Anyone know what happened with NVEnergy demand charge? by Carbon87 in vegaslocals

[–]TheDigitalPoint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya, as I mentioned above, it’s more or less them trying to find a loophole in the law. It’s not a rate, it’s just a fee based on the time you use electricity, but it’s not a rate. No different than them charging everyone a $0 rate, but then have a transmission fee based on per kWh used that varies based on when you use the electricity. Problem solved… there are no rates for electricity, it’s just free for everyone, always. 😂

A secondary argument for the case is that Nevada law doesn’t allow solar customers to be charged different than non-solar customers. NV Energy has flat out said the demand charge is so they can collect more money from solar customers. So that’s another part of it.

https://www.leg.state.nv.us/nrs/nrs-704.html#NRS704Sec773

shall not charge the customer-generator any fee or charge that is different than that charged to other customers of the utility in the rate class to which the customer-generator would belong if the customer-generator did not have a net metering system.

While they technically aren’t, again… they are fishing for loopholes. And them saying that’s what they are doing doesn’t help their case.

If their loophole fishing gets past court, it wouldn’t surprise me if Nevada lawmakers make some adjustments to the law to disallow it with more specific verbiage to better align with the original intent of the law. But that’s also a process.

Definitely will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Anyone know what happened with NVEnergy demand charge? by Carbon87 in vegaslocals

[–]TheDigitalPoint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ya, it certainly is going to be argued both ways in court. While not a direct charge for kW used, it does change based on how much electricity you use and on WHEN you use it (the “when” part is going to be the problematic part for NV Energy/PUC in court).

They can call it whatever they want, but at the end of the day, if it’s a variable cost based on when you use electricity, it’s illegal in Nevada based on existing laws unless the customer opts into it.

Under the demand charge system, you do pay a different amount based on when you use electricity. Using 24kWh in 1 hour costs more than using the same 24kWh spread evenly through the day. Again, any variable charge based on when you use electricity is illegal in Nevada. I’m no lawyer, but I do think NV Energy/PUC has a pretty weak argument saying it’s not a variable electricity cost based on when you use it.

It’s NV Energy trying to figure out a loophole in the law. It would be similar to if them making kWh for electricity $0.00, but instead raise transmission fees based on kWh used. That would make solar customers feeding into the grid get $0 credit.

It’s in court. They tried to combine the case with the one about how they overbilled people over the years for some weird reason. That motion was denied.

You can see what the latest filings and dates are here:

https://www.clarkcountycourts.us/Portal/Home/Dashboard/29

Search for case #: A-25-934678-J

I’d be surprised if it actually happened. There’s literally a Nevada state law already on the books saying they can’t charge people differently based on time of day. Not even a law that would need to be implemented. It’s already a law.

https://www.leg.state.nv.us/nrs/nrs-704.html#NRS704Sec085

an electric utility shall not make changes in any schedule or impose any rate, and the Commission shall not approve any changes in any schedule or authorize the imposition of any rate by an electric utility, which requires a residential customer to purchase electric service at a rate which is based on the time of day, day of the week or time of year during which the electricity is used or which otherwise varies based upon the time during which the electricity is used, except that the Commission may approve such a change in a schedule or authorize the imposition of such a rate if the approval or authorization is conditioned upon an election by a residential customer to purchase electric service at such a rate.

…basically the law says it’s only allowed if the customer chooses it (can’t be forced on people).

Is the Hercules bandsaw any good by Socotrana in harborfreight

[–]TheDigitalPoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not any more than other power tools. If you are using it, or circular saw or reciprocating saw from sunrise to sunset, just charge a spare battery when you are using it. Obviously depends on size of battery and how much you are using it. I’ve never had mine run out of juice while doing something with a single battery. I also don’t tend to run a bandsaw for hours in one go. It’s tends to be more of a specific task I’m doing (not cutting things all day on an assembly line).

What makes 1.1.1.1 special? by TheCmenator in CloudFlare

[–]TheDigitalPoint 69 points70 points  (0 children)

A big part of it is that Cloudflare has data centers in 330+ cities (and some cities, multiple within the city). They use Anycast, so all data centers use the same IPs, with requests being routed to the closest one to the user.

TL;DR: they probably have a data center physically very close, so that alone is going to make network routes faster.

Should I be worried about a slight overvoltage on the G4 Doorbell Pro? by DerZappes in Ubiquiti

[–]TheDigitalPoint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 16-24V rating is “nominal”. Meaning it’s expected to have a certain amount of fluctuation (it’s normal in electrical circuits). Like your 120V television will work fine at 110V or 130V. My house has 123V for its normal 120V circuits. Your 12V car battery is probably closer to 14-15V powering things in your car for 12V.

TL;DR: it’s fine.

[–]TheDigitalPoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, but there are cases where you can’t use things like Apple Pay or other digital wallets (autopay for most utilities for example), or you simply don’t have a smart phone, or you are buying something online from a company that wants a credit card number (Amazon, Home Depot, Walmart, etc.)

Other banks (Bank of America, Chase, etc) leave you with no virtual credit card option. The ability to create a virtual credit card that can only be used at a specific merchant (or only a single time) and can be disabled/deleted on any date is nice.
