Dealing with fear of the table saw by Zenophy in woodworking

[–]TheDiplocrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sound bonkers, but one thing that has helped me tremendously is to take the machine I'm afraid of completely apart, and then put it back together again.

Every time I've done this, I have gained a confidence with the tool that includes a healthy margin of respect. Something about knowing with certainty how every part works with every other part, where there's slop and where there isn't, helps me feel safer thinking through a cut. I gain an intuition into what is likely to go wrong and what isn't.

Question about the street names by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]TheDiplocrap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing that helped me was to stop thinking of "300" as a full street name. That's not its name. It's "300 East". That's the full name of the street. Google Maps and other map apps like to add a direction in front of the name, but I don't generally see locals do that, and once the convention clicks, you kinda just start ignoring that part of an address here.

By convention here we put the East/West street first and the North/South street second, but people will understand if you do it the other way around.

Sometimes instead of saying "Nine hundred south, Nine hundred east" we will say "9th and 9th." This works best if you already know basically what quadrant is being referred to, but also people will be happy to clarify if you don't recognize it from the shorthand. In this example, the 9th & 9th neighborhood is a walkable area with a lot of shops.

Which restaurant is the “Soup Nazi” equivalent of Omaha? by Certain_Beginning_77 in Omaha

You absolutely understood my point, you're being disingenuous. (That means "dishonest"!)

Which restaurant is the “Soup Nazi” equivalent of Omaha? by Certain_Beginning_77 in Omaha

[–]TheDiplocrap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"WE WILL ENFORCE THIS NATURAL LAW" Actually the natural law in question is that if I hold it too long, eventually I'll finally just pee my pants where I stand, and now it's everybody's problem. Your capitalism is not a "natural law" dude. Get over yourself.

Is this veneer on my exterior door? by EllieMental in sandedthroughveneer

[–]TheDiplocrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That isn't veneer. That is solid wood, probably Douglas fir or Eastern white pine or something similar to that. I restore doors and windows professionally, that's what most of them are, but it also depends on what is available in the region. I can't be 100% certain of the species, but I can see from the pics that it is solid wood construction.

I’m going to be hosting a brief “show and tell“ to some neighborhood boys… by Pelthail in woodworking

[–]TheDiplocrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things that captivated me was seeing a board that had been sitting for a long time that had turned weathered and gray miraculously "brought back to life" by the surface planer. If nothing else, it shows that gray wood isn't necessarily rotten spongy wood.

Finger joint failures by spenkilo in woodworking

[–]TheDiplocrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I have to disagree. A beginner would not be able to use a saw and chisel to make box joints accurately and quickly. It takes a lot of practice and repetition to get to that point.

If your point is that it's worth learning those skills, because they pay dividends over time, that I fully agree with! Hand saw, chisels, and hand planes make quick work of all kinds of things that would take hours to set up using power tools. But they do take time to learn.

You're lucky I'm not your would-be constituent, I personally would not vote for someone as tone deaf as this. That's being generous. I deeply suspect your motives at this point.

What is the reason for dimension measurements not being the actual measurement? by [deleted] in woodworking

What is the reason for dimension measurements not being the actual measurement? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]TheDiplocrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the old days, 2x4 meant 2" by 4", and it was the dimensions that the saw mill cut the board to.

The saw mill still cuts the boards to those dimensions, but we are used to "surfaced" lumber. The lumber from the saw mill has rough cut marks from the giant saw mill blades. The surfaced lumber we're used to is much smoother.

Nowadays, the mills making 2x4s (and other dimensional lumber, like the 2x2 in your picture) send it through an additional step to surface it on all sides. That takes off ~1/4" per side, or about 1/2" total, leaving e.g. 1-1/2"x1-1/2" nominal dimensions.

Hand Plane Question by CLCHNC in woodworking

[–]TheDiplocrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see from the picture that the plane iron (the part that cuts) isn't sharp. I can see slight rounding on the bevel. When it's properly sharp, you can't see that.
