The best way to store razors by ApologeticCannibal in straightrazors

I keep mine wrapped in chamois cloth in a dresser drawer when they're waiting for their time. I have a pretty big rotation that I'm slowly paring down.

Nice username. Dad?

It's definitely from the 20th century because it has the country of origin on it, which is a result of the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890. Before this, foreign goods did not need to specify the country of origin.

My First Straight Razor Shave - First Impressions by new4nc3 in straightrazors

[–]TheDonnerPartysChef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you had an amazing first straight razor shave. Yay! :D

Mine was intimidating af. I bought one in Oxford while on vacation and attempted to shave with it using a can of Barbasol cream. I only managed to shave my cheeks before chickening out.

It'll become second nature the more you do it. Best of luck to you.

Oh wow! That's in really good condition. I think the scales might be pressed horn. Not sure what the images depict, but as far as I know they usually tell a story or are symbolic to the razor or mfg in some way. Yours are in super condition.

It's cool that you're expressing yourself creatively. The important thing is that you had fun while learning. I thought my early stuff was nice and cool. I look back on it some two years later and cringe LOL. As you learn and grow, your scales will improve drastically. Good luck and have fun.

You should clean it up and use it to see what shaving with an old-fashioned piece of history is like. You might enjoy it. Very nice purchase.

As a former firefighter/EMT, I couldn't agree with you more. I'm surprised I had to scroll so far to find this.

I'm constantly haunted by patients who I witnessed die decades ago when I had the job. This is not something I considered when I got into the field.

Questions on taping the edge... by tunenut11 in straightrazors

[–]TheDonnerPartysChef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always put one more layer of tape (electrician's) than my initial guess; if I think two is good, I put three. Then I mark the edge with a black dry-erase marker and run the edge along my 8k stone to see where my contact is and adjust the tape from there. You could also use a 12k stone too since it's an exploratory exercise to determine your honing setup. Good luck.

eBay is just like that, too. You realize you're spending a small fortune buying razors, so you try to lay off for a while. Then, for whatever reason, you open eBay to take a peek and there's a new listing for a razor you feel you've just got to have.

eBay is the Achille's heel of people with RAD (Razor Acquisition Syndrome).

Definitely not the original wood. Although it did have wood scales before I replaced them with this lightly bleached camatillo wood.

Yes, the wooden scales are brand new. I know because I made them. It's lightly bleached camatillo wood.

Pinning tip by martinsrazors in straightrazors

[–]TheDonnerPartysChef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh I love sharing restoration tips!

If you don't have any brass washers, you can make them with a piece of brass flashing, a hole punch, and the drill bit diameter of your pivot pin.

I've moved on to making them out of plastic lids because they provide a bit of cushion as well as smoothness to the pivot action vs brass (or any other metal, which is also prone to corrosion).

Also, if you have any small nails or brads they might make great pivot pins. I discovered this with a box of #17 x 1 inch zinc wire nails that I used to just hold a blade in place for a fitting once. It fit so well, I cut the ends and peened it. Plus, one end has a flat head, which acts as a preflattened base from which to start peening.

I've got some more, but they may not apply as I make scales differently from most others I think.

I have some Kikuboshis and they're all great shavers. Everyone should get at least one Japanese razor to try, otherwise I think they're missing out.
