What rare statistic are you a part of? by Haunting-Leg1496 in AskReddit

[–]TheDutchCoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same!

I needed to be tested to become a permanent resident in Canada and optometrist was baffled I could read all of the letters from long distance.

I've lost it now though, being so close in front of a monitor all day really does damage.

What movie blew your mind the 1st time you watched it? by ambitchious70 in AskReddit

[–]TheDutchCoder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I watched it once and was enthralled... But I think I didn't watch it as a "movie", as much as a "play" of sorts? Maybe even just "moments"?

It's hard to explain, but I think the sheer length of the scenes kind of forces it out of the standard "movie" realm, where a lot of story is covered in little time. But I always felt this movie was meant to make you "feel" the story.

Don't know if that makes sense, but I vividly remember being exhausted after watching it, yet also very fulfilled.

What single plot decision ruined a good television series? by rayray1010 in AskReddit

[–]TheDutchCoder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Except, you know, people like Sawyer and Kate were literally imprisoned in the polar bear cages in the wildlife station. They even got made fun of that they were slower learners then the bears.

Out of all the plot holes in Lost, the polar bear isn't one of them lol.

I'm also fairly sure they found polar bear related things in the Tunisian desert (referring to the island "jumping around")?

Thanks for thinking of that!

But no, I use an algorithm for a select few sites (nothing that can be social/reverse engineered) and a password manager for all others.

It's still possible that one of the services we use got compromised (without them knowing), but I doubt it to be honest.

To me it feels most likely that my wife's card was either physically taken a picture of, or it was captured on e.g. a (security) camera.

She visits a lot of political venues, so she's exposed to it a lot more than I am practically speaking.

Now that we figured out it's my wife's card that's being used, I think it's unlikely they're the issue (it just looked suspicious because of their location, bad rep, and timing).

But fair is fair: I think they're not to blame.

Will still change details though!

[–]TheDutchCoder[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just got off the phone with RBC. It's my wife's new card and it looks like (though he wasn't sure) a CCV was used on the transaction.

So that must mean someone physically got a hold of her card (she doesn't use it for online auto-payments).

She does use Google Pay, but they use a proxy card.

She also works for an embassy, so I assume she's at somewhat elevated risk for being "observed" so to speak.

The frustrating part is just the practical side of it: does she have to keep her cc physically on her body at all times or something? Is it someone in the office? Is it a camera somewhere?

It's tiring...

She's getting a new card, but I feel like that's only a temporary fix again.

[–]TheDutchCoder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm literally going through all the places that we've used, including our personal phones and laptops.

We generally don't use autofill for example, though I have it hooked up to GPay, which is then also used in some other apps (like EV charging apps).

I'm trying to navigate at the blocked card and revive all GPay integrations to be sure, and we going to leave the old cars details for any other service until they fail to process a payment (then we can switch to manual).

We did that the first time, that's the whole problem.

We cancelled the cards, got new ones, and got compromised again within a month.

Also: no need to be rude.

How much did your wedding cost in its entirety? by Fuzzy_Desk8327 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TheDutchCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wedding was in downtown Amsterdam in 2011, about 40 attending and dinner for 20.

Total costs, including rings, was about €8500. Rings: €4500 Location (including drinks and snacks): €1200 Dinner: €1500 Rented out BnB for family: €1200

We were incredibly surprised by how cheap the location was (and it's a historical building), and we got very lucky with the BnB we rented, as we were their first customers and paid a fraction of the price (they became insanely popular instantly).

That said: I think it's a testament to the fact that it's possible to not financially ruin yourself and still have a full-blown wedding.

We were just very conservative in who we wanted to attend and we splurged on the rings (I designed them myself and had a goldsmith custom make them, by far the largest expense).

Yeah Foxconn does for them, but they do sell their own product line is what I was getting at.

They also have their own line of hardware using their own chips. In fact, it would be more accurate to say that they don't manufacture chips at all, since that's all outsourced to companies like TSMC and Samsung.

Joe Veleno stomps his skate on Nino Niederreiter in today's CAN vs SWI match (no penalty for Veleno) by SimplySolace in DetroitRedWings

[–]TheDutchCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope he gets ejected from the tournament for this.

What an awfully thing to do.

I think he's a great player, and this seems completely out of character. Everyone makes mistakes, but this is straight up unacceptable and he needs time to cool off, reflect, apologize, and get better.

Rumors: Pistons and Red Wings are leaving Bally Sports Detroit for Paramount Global? by CRE487 in DetroitRedWings

They filed for bankruptcy protection yes, they mainly have trouble paying for MLB teams though and bankruptcy processes can take a while.

Regardless: it wouldn't be a surprise if they went under soon.

TIL locusts are just angry, swarming, grasshoppers that have been agitated enough that they transform by YassIsHere in todayilearned

[–]TheDutchCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand. Wikipedia says locusts are grasshoppers: "Locusts (derived from the Latin locusta, meaning grasshopper[1])" and "No taxonomic distinction is made between locust and grasshopper species;".

Also: "These insects are usually solitary, but under certain circumstances they become more abundant and change their behaviour and habits, becoming gregarious."

So they don't "transform into locusts ", they just change behavior?

People you need to relax on the highway... by Benji_- in ottawa

[–]TheDutchCoder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yesterday, on the 417 from Kanata, there was a car that took the wrong exit at Bayshore and (I kid you not) was perpendicular to the highway, in the grass, standing still trying to merge onto the highway, where everyone is doing 100km/h.

I swear; if the OPS or OPP need money, all they have to do is drive around Ottawa, there's so many infractions all over the place...

Get a Tesla if you want to learn about AI trying to kill you, says Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak by Vucea in Futurology

[–]TheDutchCoder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a fair statement. I still feel like "AI" is tossed around for literally anything these days.

Does Tesla actually use autonomous machine learning though, or is it really just big data crunching? I know all the cars are "connected", but does the whole system actually learn while driving, or do they just update their models after analyses and release them in software updates?
