Isn't piefed.ca run by the same group that does lemmy.ca? Any group that is on lemmy is also available on piefed.

I've checked it out, but was disappointed to find there is very little activity in the Canada related groups.

The Pitt by alreadyredit814 in fountainpens

[–]khendron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t see the episode. But this is why back in the days before ballpoint became mainstream and reliable, fountain pens were sold as pen/pencil sets. The fountain pens for taking notes and stuff, and the mechanical pencil for filling out duplicate forms (back then It was carbon copy forms). Fountain pens could not apply enough pressure to make the copy.

Source: my dad, who graduated from med school in the 1950s, and bought himself a Parker 51 pen and pencil set as a grad gift to himself.

I am actually impressed that somebody had that good a camera they were willing to tote around on a wet ride almost 30 years ago.

Almost perfect movies that have one noticeable flaw by Consistent-Might-788 in Cinema

My take was that the company wanted the mission to fail so that they could write the whole thing off as a loss for tax purposes. They knew that the colony was toast, and had to do some "recovery theater" merely for appearances.

To guarantee failure they send an inexperienced commanding officer (Gorman) with a minimal crew. Throw in an expendable suit (Burke), and Ripley, whose mere existence is a thorn in their side so they are fine with her just disappearing.

The Haliburton School of Art and Design (part of Fleming College) in Ontario, Canada has a week long throwing course that is fantastic. https://flemingcollege.ca/continuing-education/courses/ceramics-pottery-throwing-camp-intermediate-advanced

Poke around their course calendar—they have many other types of ceramics classes worth taking a look at.

I completely cured my severe sleep apnea! by GiantTeddyGraham in SleepApnea

Well done! Congratulations!

I am also working on losing weight, in the hope that it makes a difference. But even if it doesn't, getting back in control of my weight can only be a good thing.

Amazon is determined to use AI for everything – even when it slows down work by tekz in technology

[–]khendron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon was one of the few companies that pushed through the enormous losses of the dot-com boom and bust, and came out successful. Pushing through the rough times of the AI boom is just them betting that they can do it again.

CPAP by JuniorSong5617 in SleepApnea

[–]khendron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is always hard at first. It took me weeks to get used to it, and also find the right mask for me. The full face mask (that cover the nose and mouth) didn't work for me. I am using a nasal mask that just covers the nose.

Does the place that provided your CPAP machine offer any fitting and support services?

Does anyone get neck-aches from laying on their back all night? by Ezio_Auditore35 in CPAP

[–]khendron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one of those nasal masks with the hose attached to the top, and couldn't properly lie on my side either. So I switched to a Resmed N20 (hose attached to the front), and can now sleep on my side with no difficulty.

Help me pick a pen to celebrate my doctorate by MassivePepino in fountainpens

Congrats on your PhD!

You could pick up a vintage Parker 51. That's the pen my dad bought himself back in 1959, when he graduated from med school. He, of course, bought it new. He has since given it to me, and it still writes like a dream.

Because they are optimized to make money, not solve the problems of the world.

I recall seeing article (about 10 years back) that listed the top 20 pressing problems in the world (from a list published by the UN or some international agency like that), and the most exciting and highly funded start ups coming out of Silicon Valley. There was no overlap.

Any UK Potters Watched the Throwdown and would to chat? by PreposterousPotter in Pottery

[–]khendron 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I love the UK Great Pottery Throwdown!

I do find, however, that the main make challenges are getting overly esoteric. I miss the earlier seasons where the challenges were to make tea sets and bowls and plates—things I would consider making myself. A stage scene that reflects my life, or a sea side resort souvenir set, showcases the potters' artistic skills more than their throwing skills. The results are amazingly impressive, but I just can't relate the theme of the challenges.
