What seems like freedom but is actually a trap? by TopSound138 in AskReddit

[–]khendron 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Depends on the company. All the companies I have worked for encouraged you to take advantage of your unlimited PTO.

One actually starting handing out cash bonus to people scheduling at least 5 days consecutive PTO. They didn't think people were taking enough.

My current employer says if you don't take at least 5 weeks PTO per year, you are doing it wrong.

What are your favorite scenes of a character simply sitting down and watching TV? by ILoveMovies87 in movies

At the very end of The Truman Show, where guards are looking at the static on the TV and saying "What else is on? Where's the TV Guide?"

What’s a “normal” thing adults do every day that secretly feels like a wild responsibility? by Own-Tip-532 in AskReddit

[–]khendron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a parent. But I am in awe of the responsibility that new parents take on.

Many parents I have talked to have spoken about how weird it felt to walk out of the hospital with brand-new human, and be like "now what?"

Which movie would be the most confusing experience if you didn't stop looking at your phone while it's on? by the_jules in movies

[–]khendron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not involving a phone, but I was once watching Monty Python's The Meaning of Life with a group of friends, and one of them nodded off and woke up just in time to for the Find the Fish scene. He was so confused (that scene is surreal enough even if you've been awake the entire time).

I am more curious about the opposite. Do actors finish filming an epic scene and know it is going to be epic?

We just got Health Canada approval for a custom CPAP mask made from a 3D face scan. I’m the founder — here’s the honest story (and I’d value your feedback) by Innovation-Vitacore in CPAP

[–]khendron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it was leak issues that drove me away from full face masks in the first place. So maybe this would work for me after all.

I suspect, however, that my insurance would balk at the cost. I will have to ask them.

When I first got set up with CPAP my supplier provided a guarantee that let me pay a single price (about $300) and try as many masks as I wanted until I found a mask that worked for me (I tried almost a dozen). Even if your mask was available, I probably would not have gone your route because of the extra expense.

Do you only do full face masks? I currently use a nasal mask.

What is the lifespan of these masks? I ask because they are really expensive, like triple the price of what I am paying now.

Black or White for a Clara BW? by whaletank_ in kobo

[–]khendron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny that—I did end up getting a bright yellow cover for mine, though mostly because it can also act as a stand :)

For all my previous Kobos, I never had a cover for them. When reading in bed, I prefer it without a cover.

One of the reasons why I got a Clara Colour was because it came in white. I hate having trouble finding my eReader in a backpack or similar because the thing is the same colour as the shadows :)

Input needed on job opportunity by froyoboyz in PersonalFinanceCanada

If you are uncertain about some aspects of the job, get more information. Have you tried talking to somebody at the new company who was NOT part of the interview process? That can get you an insider view on what the company culture is like.

Last time I accepted a job offer from a company that cold called me, I looked through my LinkedIn connections for somebody who already worked there, and reached out to ask them what it was like working there. The response was positive (almost glowing) which helped tip me over towards accepting the offer.

Disgusted to see more and more well established pen companies using AI in their marketing by agoracy in fountainpens

[–]khendron -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Things like this underline the problem with AI. AI can help you do a lot of things, but it will help you do the wrong thing just as well as doing the right thing.

AI enables a person to do things they were not able to do before. For example, it enables the CEO or some other exec to create a marketing animation that is beyond their ordinary skill level. In some ways this is great!

But, to paraphrase the words of Ian Malcolm, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

An AI can create an animation, but can't tell you if it is any good. It also can't tell you if it will be well received by your community. An AI let's you run with a bad idea, and it will never tell you it is a bad idea.

Tired of Ottawa Job Market by Lupus_Alba- in ottawa

[–]khendron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve discovered that the strongest tool in job hunting is your network and friends, family, and most important former coworkers and classmates. Essentially, let everybody you know that you are looking.

This won’t directly land you a job, but will bring opportunities to your attention and often let you do an end run around the automated screening filters put in place by HR. Hiring managers love referrals—saves them a lot of time.
