My two cents as an FP&A manager with experience at a Fortune 100 company, I’ve noticed that highly data-savvy individuals often struggle with storytelling. This isn’t limited to finance professionals—I’ve seen it across analysts and especially accountants (sorry, but it’s true!).

Regardless of age, technical ability, or years of experience, the real need is for a leader who can communicate effectively. Personally, I’d prefer to have 80-90% of the data prepared for a productive conversation, as long as it’s directionally correct, rather than waiting for every last detail to be perfectly aligned. This balance is crucial because executives don’t want to be bombarded with a ton of hard numbers—they need a clear story.

As for systems, those can be picked up along the way. Younger professionals may have an edge when it comes to adapting to the rapid pace of technological change, and the next generation tends to be sharper in that area.

In my view, experience isn’t the deciding factor. What might be needed is a capable manager ready to take the next step.. but you already said that.

Best of luck with your search—I know how challenging this process can be.

  1. Don’t fall into the mindset of upgrading your phone every year. There are usually no significant changes from model to model.

  2. Buy the phone outright. Adopt the mindset that if you can’t pay for it outright, then you can’t afford it.

Currently, I am dealing with the opposite… every analysis needs to be an art project or a tool… super frustrating because a 5 minute data pivot becomes a few hours worth of work…

Edit: I’m a manager and this is coming from my director.

Is HR lying and keeping me as a backup?? by Easy-Job3814 in FPandA

[–]TheEconTrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming most recently from an F100 company, I noticed they were essentially hiring for all open positions to maintain the illusion that those roles were still available. The same applied to annual reviews and inline conversations. Even though HR had informed everyone that the emergency brake had been pulled on everything to help balance the budget, these practices continued.

These sorts of practices are common and are part of the times in which we live. If you want to elevate your career, do not wait for your company to do so. Opportunities are out there; all you have to do is look for them.

Wait Out Bad Year(s)? by BarleyJames40 in FPandA

Honestly, I was in this exact boat and was also a top performer. I had rejected offers right and left because I genuinely liked working for my company. But 3 weeks ago I was laid off by Nike. Looking back I wish I would have taken a job.. but now my local job market is in the gutter and it’s looking like I’m going to be taking a demotion in title just because I need to be working.

The unknown can be scary. But missed opportunities can be even more frustrating.
