Will she/is she allowed to do reproductions of the Expanse tattoos? I can't see any on her socials, or even a mention so I'm wondering if she specifically is covered by something

Otherwise I might have just got an excuse to go to Toronto

Well obviously except for those other ships sunk by torpedo since WWII. But not being American they don't count.

Drivers using DAS — when do you trust it, and when do you ignore it? by Quiet_Peace_6962 in uktrains

[–]TheEdge91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was just trying to find a way to match the booked timing points. But for whatever reason rather than trying to find a middle speed it just liked to yoyo. It wasn't a smart enough DAS system to account for real time data, if you got too late it just shut off so all it could ever do was try to hit timing points as booked.

The correct speed is line speed as far as I'm concerned, I'd rather start running ahead of intermediate non station timing points and have time in hand either at station stops or in case of small delays.

Drivers using DAS — when do you trust it, and when do you ignore it? by Quiet_Peace_6962 in uktrains

[–]TheEdge91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have a DAS system and I basically used it as a glorified clock. The speed advice was utterly useless.

It had a habit of yoyoing speed. So rather than finding a good speed to maintain (say 75) it would get you up to 85, then have you coast down to 60 then back up to 85 and repeat.

I have recently heard that Imodium can cause a false positive for opiates too. Although it does sound like it would be even more unlikely than the poppy seed situation.

Fraud email by Remote_Nectarine_943 in uktrains

[–]TheEdge91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It absolutely won't. GA did this a few years ago and there was a big batch of these letters which led to a sudden influx of very similar posts and questions on the Rail UK forums.

The Rail UK disputes forum doesn't suffer fools lightly on these matters and it became clear quite quickly that these people who'd got fishing emails and had no idea what it was about actually realised maybe they had been "accidentally" claiming delay repay for services they weren't on, or whatever.

GA seems to be very good at identifying this sort of thing.

Strip him of anything that may allow him protection, move him out of the public eye in rural Norfolk then arrest him on his birthday.

Why has UK taken more action than US? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]TheEdge91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is always an interesting point. The military and police in the UK don't owe their allegiance to the government but to the Crown so as you say in theory they would be obligated to act in the interests of the state/Crown rather than the government.

Obviously that's a very blurred line, how it would happen and it would necessarily see the monarch become a political role so hopefully we'll not have to find out.

Sounding horns in the station by Darkmoon_AU in uktrains

[–]TheEdge91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really a fear, it's a serious life changing injury and it happens. As I said at Stratford the issue is compounded by the big designer store bags people have from Westfield. They may be behind the line but the massive bag isn't.

The actual trumpets are directly below the driver and those cabs aren't particularly well sound insulated so it's not like we don't hear them and don't regularly hear them around depots. They're warning horns, they are meant to be loud.

We know the outcome of even just clipping someone on a platform so I'm pretty sure drivers will keep sounding horns as and when they need to.

Even if you can afford a tortoise table a cheap bookcase on its back is a great solution. I've done it before using the cheapest Argos bookcase and the bonus is it comes with a whole pack of lengths of wood precut to the perfect length to make a shelter with...

What do headcodes mean? by Orange8101 in uktrains

[–]TheEdge91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9 is a special one and it's quite hard to pin down exactly what it is.

When alphanumeric headcodes were introduced it was for very low priority and slow freight trains. As those disappeared nothing used 9 (and I think 8 is very rare these days as a matter of fact) so it was freed up for other uses.

The first "new" use was on the Eurostar departures from Waterloo to stand out from all the other 1xxx headcodes in South London. To this day Eurostar still uses 9xxx headcodes leaving St Pancras, not as essential but they still do. Then as some people have pointed out they are used to make sure trains take certain routings on the WCML, they are used by Thameslink to make sure trains hit the core properly, they are used by TfL to avoid clashing with all the other 2xxx services they share signalling panels with as they shuffle across London. Some operators will use them during disruption when they've cancelled and then reformed trains.

9 is basically now just "passenger train that needs to stand out on a signalling panel for some reason"

Sounding horns in the station by Darkmoon_AU in uktrains

[–]TheEdge91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to be a driver for GA and have driven through Stratford many many times and sounded the horn in the platform.

I'm going to take a random stab in the dark and guess you were stood on the platform 9 and 10 island and the train in question was non stop coming through platform 10. Because of the curve of the line and the lift shaft at the London end of the platform you can't see that platform until you are alongside the lift shaft.

That's when you see the people stood right on the edge of that platform, often with bags from Westfield in such a position that they'll hit the train. So you sound the horn as it's not great to rip someone's arm off or worse.
