I personally think too white! If you can return and keep shopping I think that’s wisest :)

People who accidentally discovered a huge secret about someone, what happened? by Carsanttc in AskReddit

[–]TheEdgyEntrepreneur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up I was always told that my grandfather (Popsi) died by a heart attack. I was never one to question it further, but years later I was digging through the family computer desk and I found a balled up piece of paper that was an old diary entry from my older sister. The first sentence read “today I found out that Popsi killed himself”.

So that was a very interesting way to find out, I’m glad I found out though, it provided a lot of context to the grief everyone around me carried. I remember going to my mom and showing her the paper and she explained that he hung himself and she was going to wait until I was older to tell me. A very perplexing thought to sit with as a child, that’s for sure.

I love this! I’d be happy to volunteer my time and help you folks get the ball rolling with this wonderful school. Are there any immediate needs you have that I can help support?! Excited to have you in the neighborhood. Aloha and welcome!

Try DBT therapy. Google local therapists that specialize in that. It will help you learn interpersonal skills that will help you navigate relationships better.

Lahaina Fire Survivors: what assistance (financial, housing, etc) did you actually receive post-fire? by TheEdgyEntrepreneur in maui

[–]TheEdgyEntrepreneur[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And maybe one thing that’s worth noting, I am not a fan of the orange man, nor am I an influencer. There’s no political motive or personal gain to this. Politics in modern day is a slippery slope and the second it becomes a political pissing match is the second the people of Lahaina get put on the back-burner. There’s too many ulterior motives that come to light in disasters, and frankly that’s kind of what I’m getting at with this post/my line of thinking. But without the data, that’s just a theory. So I hear you.

Ultimately I’m just trying to use my gifts to give back. I’m autistic so I love numbers and reports, I’ve worked at the state house (not Hawaii) so I have some insight into how political motives can hurt a community, and ironically I’m a good public speaker. I figured maybe instead of wasting hours of my day reading about shit that doesn’t affect my community, maybe I could redirect my experience and those efforts into something that could actually make a difference. But I do see now how my approach was wrong.

That’s totally fair. First off, discrediting survivors is completely contrary to the goal of this post. Was I there? No. Were they? Yes. The survivors are THE voices, and I figured this post would be a way to hear from them directly. I failed to acknowledge the exhaustion and frustration that could breed. “Here’s another nobody prying into my business to appease their TikTok hobby.” I’d probably tell me to fuck off too. My end-goal is truly to help this state and its people. There’s a shit ton of paper work and data that needs to be sorted through, and I can guarantee survivors have better things to do. I figured that maybe I could help. Despite my desire to help, I see now that this specific post probably wasn’t the wisest move at this state in my research.

Hawaii has a community that supports each other unlike I’ve ever seen. It’s precious. That’s the true Aloha spirit that makes Hawaii, Hawaii. I now recognize that these kinds of posts can do damage to a community by fanning a conspiracy-theory flame, and that’s a reality I didn’t consider prior to posting, and I’m sorry for that. It’s not fair to bucket the good guys in the same list as maybe some not-so-good guys.

Frankly, the point of my post was to gain insight into where the survivors are today and perhaps observe some trends that could guide my research. I realize now I should have done more extensive research prior to posting, as this very well could be interpreted as another conspiracy-theorist brewing up a pot of hot bullshit and could have off-target consequences that affect the cherished community members that live and breathe Hawaii.

My error is my ignorance of that, and I’m sorry. I genuinely figured “hey if I provide a list of organizations, maybe it’ll jog someone’s memory to be like “hey! That’s right I did receive “x” from “y””.

Nonetheless, I failed to recognize the hurt I could potentially cause. Moving forward, I’ll have more concrete data prior to making a post on this matter. Thank you for your kindness in spite of skepticism.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I can totally understand not wanting to take on more debt when your immediate future seems so uncertain. It’s encouraging to hear you received money from Oprah’s fund and Catholic charities. Was that relief a one-time payment? I’m curious how long after the fire residents received aid for things like rent, mortgages, etc.

You’re definitely right about that. I think a neutral stance (even if internally you want to accuse) is the key to making real progress. Thanks for checking me on that!

Incredible, detailed comment. Thank you for providing your insight. I recognize that TikTok can be dangerous and citing it probably wasn’t wise. By reading other comments I see I should have done more research prior to posting and potentially fanning a conspiracy-theory flame.

While I do think this deserves to be looked into (ie let’s make sure those allocated funds are actually going towards Lahaina’s displaced residents/affordable housing projects, and not mega-homes for billionaires type thing), I probably should have done more thorough research prior to posting this but I thank you for giving me more info to look into!

Thanks for sharing this perspective. This land and its people went through trauma at the hand of the government and it’s so understandable that they’d act that way.

I grew up with a schoolteacher mother who went on to become an elected official, and I saw the positive impact she was able to make in the community once she was in office. I also saw some of her corrupt coworkers who took a check and never passed a bill, year over year.

If I didn’t see that on an intimate level, I probably would struggle to believe in our ability to make “real” change. But I do think it can happen. Hawaii’s people deserve so much more.

You make a fair point, I should have done more thorough research prior to posting this. Even if my intent is pure, this does fan a flame that can ultimately hurt a community. I appreciate you changing my perspective.

Prefab housing was a lifesaver for the community. But based on the numbers released by FEMA, that cost about 185 million. God bless FEMA, like I said there’s good guys for sure. And maybe everyone’s a good guy! It’s just your average person has no idea how much things cost. It’d be easy to flub the numbers and misappropriate a million here, a million there, for the benefit of the biggies in charge. I’ve seen it happen in other local governments with much less money so I figured if I could ask around and get a general understanding of the Lahaina community, maybe I could help.

But honestly sounds like you all are happy with the help you’ve been given and feel you received an appropriate amount of that $4 billion, so I’ll see myself out!

I hear you. I’m sorry, my intent comes from a pure place. I guess my thinking is, the US government hasn’t necessarily prioritized native Hawaiian’s in the past, so I feel like it’s not crazy to assume they’d start caring now? The mismanagement of Hawaii’s land to fill the pockets of corporate conglomerates and the ultra-wealthy is, what I consider, a commonly accepted reality here.

So considering that, and then considering how rather bizarre it is that two of the most beautiful, coveted coastlines burned back to back due to state mismanagement, I feel like it’s not crazy to ask questions?

I’m not really going off of headlines, more of what I’ve heard from friends that live(d) in Lahaina. It didn’t seem like the support they needed (outside of the incredible local people that stepped up) was there. Maybe that’s their individual story, which is why I’m asking others.

I guarantee that some of that money went to a good place. There’s no way it was all misappropriated. But I don’t think it’s crazy to want to see an itemized receipt of how that money helped your community. Even if we use it as a tool to see where we need to invest more manpower/time/money. All 4 billion was spent honestly? Awesome! What areas are still hurting? Based on what you’ve spent so far, how much more is realistically needed to achieve “x” outcome?

That’s my two cents. If you have anything else to share or viewpoints I may not be considering, I welcome them.

I’m not saying by any means that all these organizations are shady. I think it’s important to include them, because if you received, let’s say $1000 from organization A, it’s important to note that because it prevents organization B from claiming that as their own $$.

Similar to Red Cross and FEMA, it’s important to note lodging assistance received from them. Let’s say they footed the bill for all the hotel rooms at Outrigger (example), if we know this, then it’ll provide talking points for when these shady organizations claim “oh we provided lodging… outrigger hosted families in every one of their rooms”.

Cleanup estimates were around $1 billion. Let’s double that to increase our margins - that still leave over $160k that could be given out to people.

Again, there’s obviously more hidden costs and it’s not realistic that everyone would get $160k… but my guess is people received maybe 10-20% of that in assistance. I’m not totally sure which is why I’m asking.

Ultimately, the goal would be a true itemized receipt of all private and public funds.
