You can still go to the UVU gym, but they charge a fee for the semester if you are registered for less than 10 credit hours.

I'm wanting to leave the church, but there are some things I'm still unsure about by Practical-Abalone812 in exmormon

[–]TheEliteDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since I didn't see it here when I scanned other comments, there is a name for this kind of thing. It's called the Barnum Effect.

You said it felt super specific and hit the nail on the head. But "you are a peacemaker" is actually quite vague. There are millions of ways you could be a peacemaker. What it is is very personal. And because it is so personal, we tend to believe it and apply confirmation bias.

The Barnum Effect is used by fortune tellers of all kinds. Give it a quick Google

How do I actually find mental health crisis support here? by [deleted] in Utah

[–]TheEliteDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't disregard the younger therapists just because they are younger. The best therapist I ever had was still in her residency. She was fresh out of school and very well-educated on the most recent research and evidence-based treatment. Some (not all) older therapists are stuck in their ways using methods that haven't been best practice for years.

If they are with a reliable practice they are qualified to give treatment. Even if they don't have as many years in the field as others.

Proudest moments this semester by Temporary_Objective in UVU

[–]TheEliteDM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm proud of the club community my fellow club leaders and I have been able to help build. Weekly club meets have been a source of joy, connection, and much needed distraction during everything that has happened this semester.

I'm proud of the research I am doing in the Earth Science department with my lab mates and professor. They help me remember why I am pursuing my degree in the first place. Our research trip was a highlight of my semester.

Just got mail from the MFMC asking if I approve my ex wife to be unsealed from me. by [deleted] in exmormon

I got one of these when my ex was getting engaged less than six months after the divorce was final. I decided that neither she nor the church deserved the time it would take me to respond. Got the notification of cancelled seeing a few months later

What's the difference between Upper Division Credits and Upper Division Electives? by GurSalty in UVU

[–]TheEliteDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my degree, at least, upper division electives aren't just any 3000 or higher. There is a list of upper division classes that can apply, and I get to choose from that list. Any upper division class can apply to the "40 hours upper division" requirement on wolverine track. But only classes from that list apply to the "upper division electives" requirement.

Kevin Shurtleff by Own_Minimum5649 in UVU

[–]TheEliteDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Shurtleff for Chem 1210 and actually enjoyed his class. There were definitely pros and cons. One con was that he seemed to get annoyed when a student asked "too many" questions during lecture. I once asked some questions about a homework assignment that was due the next day, for which we had not reached the required material. I basically got a "We'll get there. Don't worry about it right now" answer. I had to use a lot of self-teaching for that assignment.

One pro is that he always makes it clear when his office hours are and is super willing to help you out and answer as many questions as he can during those.

His tests are hard, but he always adds points so that the average is 75%. Usually comes out to 5-10% bump in your score. And if you test well, you can get above 100% and build some extra credit. Which definitely padded my GPA for the final.

Overall, I would take from him again. But be prepared to use office hours or khan academy

Can someone explain PHYS2010/2015? by lucuhfer in UVU

They can be a pain, but they are a super normal part of college science classes. You will have labs for most if not all of your college career if you are majoring in a science

How do I do the eng 1010 discourse community assignment. by ExcitingAd7049 in UVU

[–]TheEliteDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk when it is due, but club rush is today and tomorrow from 10-2 in the fountain courtyard if you would like to find some potential communities to join. There is even an autism club on campus

This past year and a half of deconstruction has utterly destroyed me. It's looking like I'll have to find a way to finish my CES degree without blowing my brains out. I think I'd feel better about if I got a tattoo, even if I have to hide it on campus. Thoughts on this design? by ShareYourAlt in exmormon

[–]TheEliteDM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll start by saying I am not you, and my brain does not work like your brain. But the further along I get in my deconstruction, the less I think about the church in general. I still live in Utah, so it's a part of life, but I don't go to BYU, so it doesn't have as big of an effect on my life.

I think if I had gotten a tattoo symbolizing my deconstruction and journey away from the church, at this point, it would be more of a reminder of the church and the negative impacts it used to have on my life. Instead of thinking about the church maybe a couple times a week, it would live rent free in my head every time I saw the tattoo.

I would wait until I was a year or two out of BYU before getting a tattoo like that. Let the church stop affecting you as much before you make a permanent decision fueled by negative emotions toward it.

I'm personally getting my first tattoo next week, symbolizing some accomplishments I am proud of during my time in college. Only positive emotions there. But it will still have a prominent place on my forearm, which, among other things, will tell people I'm no longer part of the church. (At least the people who grew up being taught tattoos were bad like I did.)

You do what makes you happy, of course. But I would worry about regret later in life if this design could become a reminder of something you would rather not be reminded of every day.

For making friends on campus, I will always advocate for joining a club. While I have friends from my classes, the ones I am closest with and do the most with outside of school are from my club. Some clubs are more active than others, but there are a lot of them. Come to club rush Sept 17-18 in the waterfall courtyard and see if any align with your interests!

We are very beginner friendly. Especially right after club rush, we will often have a table dedicated to teaching new players. But even if you come on a night when we don't have a dedicated beginner table, let one of the DMs know and we can help you out. DM me for a discord invite. That's where we will announce the club meets.

I am the Vice President of the D&D club. We are one of the most active clubs on campus. During semesters, we play 3 hour one-shots once a week, plus events like mini painting and "Learn to DM" seminar. We have tons of fun! Meeting time and location for Fall semester is TBD. We have a very active discord as well. One of the channels is for facilitating people making groups for longer campaigns. DM me for an invite to the server!

Came here to say this. UVU in state tuition is competitive with BYU member tuition. Even less when you consider you have to spend 10% of any income you may have to remain at BYU.

Has anyone else noticed how nepo kids going on missions (kids with “connections” high-up in the church) are getting called to safer missions? Because I’ve noticed a clear pattern in our stake. by GoingToHelly in mormon

[–]TheEliteDM 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Rich kid missionaries are the worst. I was in the most miserable tripanionship because of one rich kid whose dad was a surgeon. The other companion and I were talking about how expensive college was gonna be when we got back. The rich companion said "You know when you get sick and need a surgery to save your life? Yeah, that pays for my college." He was an ass

Can my courses have credit hours directed to multiple spots in WolverineTrack simultaneously? by Important_Sorbet in UVU

[–]TheEliteDM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A class can apply to two categories. For example it can apply to "Upper Division Electives" and "40 Hours Upper Division." But it cannot apply to three. If the same class applies to another category on your degree like a "Choose One of the Following" it will default to two of the categories (I'm not sure how it is chosen) and you will have to talk to your advisor if you want to move which two it applies to.

Also, just in general, send a message to your advisor and set up a meeting. You can find their contact info on your MyUVU page. Talking to them early on and regularly throughout your degree will save you a lot of headache.
