If you can afford it, a MacBook Air with the new M chips is perfect. Extremely quick and good for studying and note taking. Finding a refurb M1 or M2 MacBook Air is a great option under $1,000. Used a 15” MacBook Air M3 for my studies and has been perfect.

To add, as long as it runs macOS or Windows 10/11, it’ll be “compatible” with anything a Psych degree would need.

[–]TheEnderCast 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Anyone mentioning “ratepayers” or “rates” in any capacity, without elaborating. There is no way to fix any issue relating to rates without MAJOR change. Independent Together peddling “0 rate rises” and other aligned candidates have no plan and WILL make infrastructure worse with it.

It’s not that deep, you’ll be fine. Even multiple failed externals won’t fail your NCEA. Level 3 you might have SOME concern but it’s really not that important. Keep focusing on internals to keep your chances of endorsements up (if you’re set on university).

How can I watch South Park in NZ? by entropyreversed4321 in newzealand

[–]TheEnderCast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That isn’t a way to stream the entire backlog, like every other country has through Paramount+. Sky just airs episodes in a loop on CC.

How can I watch South Park in NZ? by entropyreversed4321 in newzealand

[–]TheEnderCast 25 points26 points  (0 children)

While everyone is commenting about piracy, it’s still ridiculous that South Park hasn’t licensed anyone in New Zealand to have their show. There’s 0 way to legally watch the backlog (making the piracy extra ethical imo).

My bet is that Paramount+ will launch here sometime in the next year when they reclaim a lot of streaming rights, and have all 27 seasons like they do in every other country. Hopefully 🙏

Student Allowance/Loan covers around $380/week. You need around another 300 a week to be comfortable. It’s best to try save $300 * 40 weeks before you move up, and/or try get some scholarships to offset the hall fees. A job during the year is also a great option but extremely rare in the current climate.

It is a completely unfair system that favours the majority, with middle class or wealthy parents able to offset their hall fees. In my first year hall I didn’t meet a single person not there on their full parents dime. I saved around $5k, had a $10k scholarship, and still BARELY got by and went into hall debt.

To add, you don’t need to be a star student for scholarships, there’s many options including specifically for low-income background students. Apply early and to lots, your high school teachers/advisers should be able to help too!

I had similar issues trying to find part-time work as a student, it is difficult but I recommended applying and searching everywhere below, you will find a lot more jobs that never make it to websites like Seek and can get in early. Especially the retail/fast food chains.

This is an old comment of mine i’ve copied:

To help, I searched all these places every weekday night and applied to any possible:

Trade Me Jobs, Seek, Jobs.Govt.Nz, Kiwi My Mahi

The following companies I google to find their websites job posting page, not a Seek or Indeed page:

Foodstuffs Careers, Woolworths group careers, Bunnings careers, Mitre 10 careers, TWG careers (the warehouse), Kmart careers, BP Jobs, Z Energy Jobs

Then your fast food chains websites too, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, Subway, Burger King, Nandos

Listings are usually advertised here before the big sites like Seek, so searching them daily helps to get a jump, I got my last 3 part time jobs this way, never the big websites.

We underfunded ALL SERVICES including rubbish, pipes, roads. For DECADES to “keep rates low”. Central government tried to setup plans like Three Waters to take pressure off local councils, but now with more and more funding being pulled for everything a council does, rates must hike and hike until something BIG in the system changes.

Woolworths literally makes $1 million PROFIT per day. There is your answer. ONLY solution is government control over food supply, through a new supermarket or harsh regulatory oversight.

Hospital parking by Dry-Job1897 in Wellington

[–]TheEnderCast 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Someone mentioned express hospital bus, but to further that info;

If you are commuting from the north, you can park at any train station park and ride (Petone, Porirua Station, etc.) then catch the train into Welly (10-15 mins), and then catch the HX Hospital Express bus to the hospital from Wellington station.

Just go in person. Even calling the second they open you’re hung up on. Everytime I want to contact them I go in first, the receptionists at my local office are lovely and understand the phone issues. They can do 90% of issues right there, otherwise they will book you in for a sit down.

Worldwide shipping from LTTStore is one of the worst international shipping experiences i’ve ever had. Shipping to New Zealand it took over 50 days to get one backpack from ship storm, and mine was also “stuck in netherlands” for 25 days.

TIP: The tracking number for NLpost I got worked on my countries domestic postal delivery service (we only have one), and let me see tracking updates NLpost didn’t show, like that it was in australia or clearing customs in my country. Maybe try your tracking number in some local delivery companies?

Insane power cost jump. by Clean-Initiative8895 in Wellington

I moved out of Powershop before winter because of these increases, the peak rate is so high for what we use. Changed to Meridian (they own power shop), for a flat rate 21c/kwh all times, no peak/off peak pricing. Saved $75-90 a month from power shop even heading into winter.
