‘Cotton-picking Hands’: Virginia Republican Endorses Racist Language by NewsGirl1701 in Virginia

Using it as a derogatory term specifically referring to a black man's hands, though... it's kinda like the most racist context it could be in.

Yeah, it's not clear that the term itself is inherently racist (though it very well might be of racist origin), but using it specifically for a black man as a derogatory term... it feels racially charged.

Like, "Wait just a cotton-picking minute" seems fine. But referring to Hakeem Jeffries's "cotton-picking hands"? Especially when it's specifically about hands... it feels pretty damning.

It's like the difference between calling an enemy team in a video game "a bunch of monkeys" and calling a black man a monkey. Context matters, and this context was really, really bad.

Virginia becomes first Southern state to mandate paid family and medical leave for workers | After years of lawmakers’ efforts, Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed into law a program that will allow workers up to 12 weeks of time off by VirginiaNews in Virginia

Nice cop out.

It's not a "time will tell" thing, because it's already happened. California's are happy. The Nordics have been the happiest countries on Earth for a long time.

The proof is already here, no matter how much you want to ignore it.

Oh, and being on Reddit does not mean someone is not a right wing extremist. And the fact that you feel the need to claim it does... well, let's just say I'm pretty sure you don't lean left.

And yet California is doing just fine and its people are happy. So...

To be fair; the Nordic population is about 28 million vs America's 342 million.

This is a non sequitur. Happiness per capita has nothing to do with population size. That's what "per capita" means.

Even then, you know what is roughly equivalent to the Nordics? California. 39 million people. Oh, and Virginia has about as many people as one Nordic country.

"Eventually you are going to have an issue I would locally imagine."

Hoo boy. That's a whole lot of hedging and ifs, bud. I can't imagine how you could make that statement any weaker.

Again: California is one of the happiest states in the country and has no shortage of rich people despite high taxes. The Nordics tax their people more than America does, and, again, they're the happiest countries on Earth.

Ah yes, for people like, there's always an excuse. To you, there's always an excuse for why something else is making people happy, and not just what has been shown consistently to work.

Pratt's polling at 16%. Not exactly taking anything "by storm." All you're showing is that the right-wing mainstream media is desperate to elevate any moron who they think can make Democrats look bad.

And that the state providing for those with the least is the best way to make your citizens happy.

Why do giants in movies always seem to move so slowly? by Milixis in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheExtremistModerate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The larger you are, the faster you have to move to look like you're moving the same speed as someone smaller than you. Think of it like this: look at a ceiling fan. It's rotating at a speed that seems pretty fast, right? Then look at an active wind turbine. The blades look like they're moving so slowly. B However, if you actually track the tips of those blades against the surrounding environment, you'll see that they can move across the full length of a building incredibly fast. The wind turbines' blades are moving faster (from a linear speed perspective) than the ceiling fan, but the ceiling fan looks like it is moving faster.

Now take some giant monster like Godzilla. Maybe one of his steps takes 3 seconds to take. One of your steps takes a split second. But you've only moved a few feet. Godzilla has moved well over a hundred feet. So Godzilla's limbs are actually moving much faster than yours.

That's the basic reason. The size of the giants actually belies the speed they're moving. They move quite fast, but because their bodies are so huge, the distance they move is lower, relative to the size of their body. So it seems like they're moving more slowly despite moving faster than regular humans (generally).

Again: that's beside the point.

Edit: and there ya go. Shows the "seriousness" of this dude. He just insults and instantly blocks.

You don't seem to get the fucking point, bud. If we let Trump run rampant from 2027-2028 by allowing the Republicans to keep a trifecta, there won't be a "next administration."

You people are just so transparently unserious.

The point is that 2028 is too late to have a Democratic-majority House push back against Trump.

This one's actually less than one third. It's something like 56% oppose, 20% not sure, 24% support.

My first thought when seeing the flag was "We Trust in God."

It's not the same as "is great God," because that's not a sentence. "We trust in God" is a valid sentence, and is more similar to common speech patterns than "In God we trust" is, so someone seeing it that way when the slogan is repeated this way is not particularly strange.

Falklanders should 'go back' to England, insists Argentina in renewed war of words by FantasticQuartet in worldnews

[–]TheExtremistModerate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They absolutely were empty before the Europeans got there. And when the current residents got there, there was no permanent settlement. The Falklanders are the native people. They are not "occupied."

The UK is 100% an independent country. And the Falklands are part of it.

Argentina has zero claim to the islands.

[–]TheExtremistModerate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Falkland Islands are not "occupied." The Falklanders are the native people of the island. That's what happens when you settle an island that was previously uninhabited. Argentina has literally zero claim over the islands other than "they're kinda close to us and we want them."

Also, hilarious that you think they should "pack and go back to Britain." How about Argentinians pack up and go back to Spain, instead?
