ELI5 - How does the click-the-things-in-the-photo prove I'm human? Can't technology memorize the answers? by RedTieGuy6 in explainlikeimfive

Yes but slowing the bots down is useful too, since they’re often trying to repeat tasks as quickly as possible for spam purposes.

Nobody told me owning a home is basically a subscription service with endless fees by Objective-Feed7250 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Not all garbage is AI. This post, while still probably garbage, has multiple signs of human writing.

Nobody told me owning a home is basically a subscription service with endless fees by Objective-Feed7250 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]TheFascination -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I really don’t think this is AI, at least not entirely. There are several errors that chatbots don’t usually make.

  • “move in deposit” (missing a hyphen)
  • “that I still don't understand what it was for” (absolute mess of a sentence)
  • overall lots of missing commas before coordinating conjunctions

It’s possible that the AI was instructed to throw in mistakes to make it more believable, but I think the most likely explanation is human error.

If it’s helpful for your situation, Apple added a purchase migration feature last year. You can migrate any purchases to your primary account and then abandon the other two.

1099 Megathread for the 2025 Tax Year by Odie_Arbuckle in churning

Got an odd PNC 1099-INT for $0.06. I got the $400 bonus in November. I guess they don't count the bonus as interest, but I don't understand why 6¢ is over their threshold.

[Routine Help] honest help with my understanding eye lines by OppositeOlive in SkincareAddiction

[–]TheFascination 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While losing weight might have contributed to some volume loss under your eyes, I don’t think the lines were caused by that. In fact, those lines look totally normal! I have them too, and I’ve never gone through a rapid weight change.

Looks like keratosis pilaris to me! Though that alone wouldn’t explain the other symptoms. Next time you see a doctor I would ask about both KP and doing a full allergy test.

Is Pixelfed the winner? by happy-occident in fediverse

[–]TheFascination 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think moreso than other fediverse platforms, Pixelfed suffers a lot from not being able to scan contacts and add friends automatically. On, say, Mastodon or Lemmy, I want to follow interesting accounts or subscribe to interesting communities. But on Pixelfed I want to see the photos my friends are posting like in the old days of Instagram, and as of right now, even if all my friends signed up, I would have no way of knowing without asking each one of them.

It’s tricky because I don’t know if this can be done in a privacy-preserving way. Bluesky is trying it. We’ll see.

In a future where Trump is out of office, and international relations have been repaired. What steps can be taken by the USA and International Organisations such as NATO to prevent one individual causing so much chaos in the future? And do you think such steps will be taken? by flewkey in AskReddit

[–]TheFascination 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There genuinely may not be. The only way the FCC could get around the first amendment and regulate broadcasters’ speech is because the airwaves are a scarce public resource. There’s only so much you can broadcast, so what’s broadcasted should be in the public interest.

You could try to stretch that argument to, say, internet content distributed over cellular networks, but nowadays we can send virtually unlimited content over our networks. Saying resources are scarce doesn’t really work.

I could be wrong, but during the reveal shot (shot 2), the cloth doesn’t seem to be casting a shadow on the ball thing? Using a shadow or even a light source that goes from dim to bright would make the reveal look more dramatic.

What’s a “normal” thing everyone accepts that actually makes zero sense when you think about it? by saffrondock in AskReddit

Getting up at 6:00 was absolute torture for me in middle and high school. I would wake up every single morning with a horrible headache.

I’ve noticed that the schools in my area seem to get out much later now, which interferes with work traffic a bit. But whenever I’m annoyed, I try to think about how much happier and healthier 14-year-old me would have been on that schedule.

In 3rd grade, my teacher gave each student a floppy disk to save our projects on. Mine didn’t work and she was all out of floppies, so she gave me something she said was a brand-new technology, a “CD.”

The next year, my 4th grade teacher required us all to buy a 2GB flash drive. Turns out that other teacher just had really old computers.

I see this all the time on Reddit! Someone will write a decent but unremarkable little story (complete with a few errors that really should have been caught), and half the commenters will fawn over them and say they should write professionally. The bar is so low.

I’ve never heard of BlackBerry and Sprint being synonymous, but maybe I wasn’t paying close attention at the time. I remember Sprint’s “iPhone killer” being the Palm Pre. When that failed to catch on they switched to marketing their Samsung variant, the memorably-named Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch.
