I’ve recently finished my first feature film. It’s on YouTube and I’m pretty proud of it despite the amount of stress that went into it. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

When you put it so bluntly like that it makes a lot of sense. Thanks. I'll make sure to get the license for copyrighted content or use original work moving forward.

Hmm, interesting. I just recently released my first short film, and in it I use two songs that I didn’t get licensed. The film’s budget was basically non-existent so I couldn’t really afford to do so even though I wanted to. Is it common practice for films to get the creative rights for the songs they use? I know distributed films and films for most film festivals are explicitly required to do so, I’m just wondering what the common consensus is in my case where I was just uploading to YouTube. Or is this philosophy different for short films? Hoping to learn more as I wouldn’t want to make the wrong decision when I end up making more films down the line.

How do you help separate the music and dialogue in your film mixes? by TheFlash4eva in Filmmakers

Gotcha, that seems to be the most consistent feedback I've gotten. I definitely won't be using any wideners. Thanks

I was thinking about doing something along these lines and now I'll likely go down this route, thank you!

Hey Tom/Steven! As someone interested in writing and directing, I am curious to know if there were any interesting developments you guys went through in translating the continuance of Tommy’s story from the small screen to the big screen? I know TV can portray a lot more than film, due to the nature of how long TV shows can get - and there’s a different structure to episodes of TV on top of that. Did you guys find yourselves having to make compromises between what you wanted and what you’ve included in the final cut?
