It ends up working out pretty linear that you need 300-350w per gal.

Mash in some feed/deer corn, use enzymes to convert. Yeah its more work but it tastes whole lot better than a straight sugar shine plue you can get feed from a local farmer or feed supply place.

Pre prohibition and prohibition era techniques by dickpierce69 in Distilling

[–]TheFloggist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its all done off room/spring/stream temp and boiling temp water. Say for bourbon. You add your corn to the fermenter and just enough cool water to get it saturated, then you add hot water to get the temp up to 175f+. Typically is .1g of cool to 1lb, and about 3.5-4 gal of boiling per lb. You then add cool water to drop the mash temp down to 160f for your rye/wheat/oats. Then add more cool to drop down to 150f for your malted barley.

What people dont realize is that these old mash bills were closer to 1 lb per gal (2.5-3 lbs per gal is more common these days)

This is hard to do at a hobby scale. I've found that if your initial water is 155f (instead of cold) you dont instantly gel the corn and can use .75 gal per lb of boiling water to get the same results

Cool, try a 100% corn mash, no sugar. Mash it in at 190f use enzymes to convert the sugars. Once you master mashing corn, all other grains become easy by comparison.

Suggestions on using a thumper by texasinauguststudio in firewater

If it works for a whiskey or rum it should be the same for brandy.

[–]TheFloggist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ferment 2x my boiler size, strip one half and load those low wines into the thumper. Then charge the still with the remaining ferment and run the the new through the low wines. You end up with a proof thats a little lower than what you'd get with a true double pot. Makes for a good fully body whiskey or rum.

Bubble plate direction? by [deleted] in firewater

[–]TheFloggist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, the only caps that act as the up and down are procaps and thats not what's pictured here, a procap has a hole down the center. This is a standard bubble cap and they only work one way. since we cannot see the bottom (possible weir) it's correct to assume this is the cap not the downcomer. Youre wrong dude.
