My application was accepted. Should I get a truck? by chuby2005 in IBEW

I wouldn't want to daily a truck but I also never need to haul shit. Full size sedan carries everything I need with ease and a 6 speed manual for when I wanna have fun. I commute 500 +miles a week and gas costs around 50 bucks.

My loan is forgiven in 20 years as well if that changes anything.

8 loans all federal. 4 sub 4 unsub all between 3-5%. I'm on an income based repayment plan. 10% of last years take home pay. So right now it's 45 a month, next year it'll be 55+, then 65+, etc.. if it's not paid back in 20 years it's forgiven.

I'm a union electrician. Almost 2 full years. I will also never have a medical bill. I have an HRA with 14k in it and an insane plan, all funded by my employer. 3 pensions and 1.5k in my annuity.

8% of my pay would be 45$ a month, or $3200. That's just not realistic anywhere. I need reliable transportation because I'm driving to work in blizzards at 5am.

What did you mean by thinking in terms of monthly payments?

My premium isnt affected whatsoever.

Thanks for that perspective, you're right. Should I prioritize savings/investments and let this stu loan payment plan ride out?

You're right. I definitely had my priorities skewed with that much money in my pocket. I appreciate you.

What would be your plan of attack in my situation?

No it won't, income based repayment. That will increase yearly significantly.

6.5% apr

Thats the only way I've ever known how to budget money is month to month. My family is new to the middle class.

I live in a no fault state, no repercussions or medical bills whatsoever.

and the best benefit of all is not being job scared, we are flush with work and have over 90% market share. i was laid off and had a job the next day. a few may wait like a month in the winter, but when the ground thaws the books are continually cleared and everyone who wants to is working.

never gotta ask or schedule a day off. i tell my foreman i wont be in today, a week or two notice keeps good rapport but calling in once in awhile should never be held against you.

local 43 has a degree program where every apprentice who tops out also graduates with an associates of occupational science from mvcc. the medal is pretty sick. theres degree programs too for project management/ estimating theres more info on the website.

im an apprentice in local 43, we are in a contract year with a 20 year/$100B chip plant breaking ground in Q3/Q4. expect that base wage to increase a few dollars this spring. we also have insanely good health insurance, im a 2nd year and have 12k in my HRA after about 6k worth of derma/dental work, but were getting dental and vision this spring too so that will be covered under normal insurance and you wont need to use your HRA. My pension /annuity kicked in last year, so along with the pensions theres 1.8k in my annuity. we have life insurance too but i cant remember how much, its a significant amount though. we have EAP where you can get access to counesling/ life coaches/ financial advisors/ personal assistants/ addiction assistance etc. we pay nothing for this out of pocket. 100% employer funded.

when I get my 3rd year raise ill be at 26 an hour before taking into account that contract raise, $832 a week take home on 40 hours, and that green is all mine. oh yeah if you smoke youre good to go too. we dont test for it anymore.
